A big welcome into my life! I am a Dan a Welsh vlogger from the UK who has Aspergers Syndrome. Aspergers Syndrome or ASD is a form of Autism, often referred to as High Functioning Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder. I video every day of my life and upload videos for you to come along with me.
I also have help videos for helping people get a diagnosis of Autism or Aspergers Syndrome, and also some advise and help for anyone who is friends, partners or loved ones who suffer from Autism or Aspegers Syndrome and just about anyone on the Autism Spectrum.
I am also in a band: www.straightjacketlegends.co.uk
*********************************
Short history on me
I was diagnosed with ASD (Asperger’s Syndrome) when I was 26 years old, after experiencing life with Autism that was unknown to me for 26 years.
Now I enjoy all things in life with my dog Randell and my girlfriend Naomi, we try and help and educate anyone and everyone on Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome however and wherever we can.

I am a light sleeper and I wake in 2 hourly intervals. I also wake tired. I relate to having a racing mind. Mine is forever "on". It is really difficult to switch off. This catches up with me every few weeks and I crash and sleep all day. I set aside one day a week, Sunday, to cool off and settle my brain. If I do not do this then the over stimulation is insane. Great vid as always 👍

I did suffer that a lot as a kid/tennage so I have a few advices first and most importantly avoid at all costs in the day the things that are going to make u have a nigthmare like seeing horror movies, books etc. In my case my problem was thinking of aliens so I knew for sure if I saw a video or read something about that in the day even if it wasn't something scary at that moment, in the night It would be impossible to take it from my thoughts, second thing that it help me is to do something that tires you before going to sleep, like some exercise or reading something very boring.

Yes! I remember telling my wife about it and she suggested I might have bipolar and experience mania. Turns out, no. I stayed up writing and entire album overnight, or had spent all night researching Elder Scrolls Lore, or Nahuatl grammar; and simply neglected sleeping. We thought the disjointed speech and hyper emotionality I had was from elevated mood... Turns out, no. Lack of sleep, and a lot of it. My high school days make so much sense, only now a decade later. XD

I generally having issues falling asleep. But like you mentioned at the end of your video, i experience that my mind flys away without any destinations. My thoughts contains everything from projects, questions, sounds, etc. I am currently live with my girlfriend which is somewhat a environment for even though we have been for a year by now. I used to exercise a lot, and it sometimes resulted in a high metabolism or I feel like that I have an uncomfortable warmth. I also get too warm if I am stressed or have been overstimulated in the past time up to that point. But my issues is usually that my mind flys all around the place, so it is somewhat dangerous for me to have philosophy as an interest or anything in the sorts.

When I was a young child I had terrible anxiety and insomnia at night. I drove my parents crazy! I've struggled with insomnia throughout my life (38 now) but as an adult I'm starting to get better at winding down at night and I sleep much better as long as I'm not going through an especially stressful time. I've often wondered if most people on the spectrum suffer from sleep issues. I know my fiancé who has Aspergers including my son and myself have suffered from sleep issues.

I fall asleep lick a rock for ~4h where people have a hard time waking me up and then it's constant wake up and toss/turn. Generally only end up getting 5-5.5h/day of medium quality sleep. According to a full sleep study I did, I tend to move my legs a lot at night and it causes my EEG to spike and partially wakes me up...

Yes, absolutely. The exact same thing happens to me at night. I'll be lying in bed, ready to go to sleep, and my mind will start racing with all of these ideas of things to write, or to draw, etc. Even as a kid, I had a hard time sleeping. And there are also times where I actually get to bed at a reasonable time, but then I end up waking up at 4AM, and just start my day, because I just can't get back to sleep. Also is it just me, or does anyone else have a hard time sleeping in a car, or just about anything that isn't a bed?

I'm not officially diagnosed with Asperger's, but I show a lot of the traits. In terms of sleep, it's like my mind just keeps racing with questions and ideas and won't shut off. It's really frustrating because I have to get up for school the next day at 5:00 AM. I've tried Melatonin and it works for a few days but then my body gets used to it and it has no affect. I sometimes will listen to a podcast like Welcome to Night Vale or Startalk just so I have something to focus on. Thanks for another video!

I have Aspergers and bipolar disorder, and during my manic phases, I have been known to stay up all night, pacing my room or running laps up and down the stairs. I find that I get more creative and motivated around midnigth so then it is really frustrating when I have to go to sleep and my head wants to create something and be active -it is just impossible sometimes to get my brain to calm down. What can help me is a lamp that I have that create sort of different colorful patterns in the dark - sometimes I can zoom into those and eventually fall a sleep. I can also relate to being a light sleeper :) - sometimes running helps me as well.

This video really resonated with me! Especially researching all night and getting creative ideas in my head. Lost count of how often I say to myself "I'll just read this and then go to bed" and then 4, 5, 6 hours later I'm still looking stuff up! There's always loads of projects, research and other neat stuff I want to do but there's only so much I can cram into my daytime hours, and I feel like if I don't carry on into the night I won't have enough time to get everything I want done.

I remember having problems falling asleep as a toddler, very early childhood(2yrs or so). The slightest sound would not just wake me, but start my heart to pounding so bad, and break out in a sweat. I still have torturous sleep, almost all the time. Military time was hell on earth...maybe 15 minutes of sleep. I've found that Melatonin helps a lot, but I do still have at least one day a week with almost no sleep. Usually Sunday night is a no sleep night in anticipation of the work week, then it takes all week to feel slightly better each day, but still can't wait for the weekend, just for the sleep opportunity. I'm sensitive to sound and light, and get startled easily. My son is autistic, and I believe my older brother is as well, although never diagnosed.

I tend to forget to eat and forget to sleep. Being assessed for aspergers/autism soon, and it suddenly makes a lot more sense. I relate a lot to being carried away researching, working on projects, etc. I frequently find myself scrolling through my lists of movies (special interest)... and then figuring, whoops I've done this for hours and the clock is now 3am, etc. I also relate to not "wanting" to sleep because I feel like I can spend the time doing something "better". Going to the gym helps a lot both with eating and sleeping, though.

I, too, am a light sleeper. For some reason, my brain can't "shut off" when I go to bed. I always stay up reading until the early hours of the morning (I should probably stop reading Stephen King at night), and then I get tired because I didn't get enough sleep. When I DO actually go to sleep, it's constantly interrupted by small sounds, like water running, for instance. Then my brain doesn't actually "wake up" until about 8:30 am to 9. (This is a particular problem on school mornings.)

I'm a female Aspie and it definitely affects my sleep; I have the same difficulty getting to sleep, my mind constantly races with creative ideas too. But once I am asleep absolutely nothing will wake me, thankfully. However I do still need the child's 10 hours a night to be fully functional, which just isnt possible at twenty five years old, and even makes working part time difficult. I usually catch up on sleep on Wednesday morning as I don't work then but as I've been too busy recently I've been extremely irritable for weeks. I've just started researching autism and sleep, which led me here, as I really need a way around this.

Exactly right! When I was younger, I rarely slept at all. It's like I'm tired and as soon as my head touches the pillow, my mind's in a million different directions at once. It's be bouncing between thoughts like "I wonder what would happen if you opened a hyperspace window in atmosphere?" to "How does Superman flight "faster than a speeding bullet" through the city without shattering every window around him with shockwave of the sound barrier breaking?" to "Damn, I messed that up... I should've said this... then this... then comment on that...". You get the picture. Another issue is that I'd be mid-project and the hyperfocus strikes; it's like I suddenly find myself in a time bubble. I already have an issue with keeping track of time. I could check a clock two seconds ago and completely lose track of what time it is.

I've always had sleep issues. Falling asleep, staying asleep. I'm also a very light sleeper. it's the worst. But mostly my brain is anxiety driven,so I'm always thinking about the "what-ifs". Then as you know its a never ending cycle where your brain just carries it on and on, next thing you know its 5 am and time to get up for work. Once I do fall asleep I have a lot of "real-feel" nightmares. and then once I wake up from one of those and calm myself down enough to go to sleep again. it's time to get up. it's very frustrating, and I envy the people who can sleep a whole night.

I'm not Aspie, but definitely on the spectrum and I'm a terrible insomniac. I used to think it was because I couldn't stop thinking about stuff -- but in fact, after many years of Zen meditation (which I think is great for anybody, not just autistics) I have learned how to stop thinking when I need to -- and it has NOT helped my sleeping at all. I can lay there, perfectly quiet in my mind, and it's like my BODY is just buzzing and buzzing and won't let me sleep. So I believe the mental turbine is an EFFECT and not a CAUSE. The things that help most (but only a little) are white noise, cool temperatures, a big heavy pillow on top of my belly. Sleeping pills might seem to help in the short term but just make things worse in the long run.

I can NEVER get to sleep at night, I usually slip into fantasy or if I have something on my mind I just can't stop thinking about it (usually paranoid about things). It usually takes me 2 hours or more to drop off and the slightest noise will wake me, so I have a fan on to provide some white noise to drown out the noises outside. I think I need about 11 hours each night, but of course I don't get my full 11 hours because it takes so dam long to get to sleep in the first place! I always wake up an hour or two earlier than I want and can't get back to sleep again, plus I also wake up several times during the night so I never get a solid sleep at all, so I never get recharged properly. But when I am asleep I have such fantastic dreams! In my dreams I'm a kid again and I have everything I always wanted (friends, a life, I'm happy, and there's always something interesting happening in my dreams, they're never boring). I wish I could record them and watch them again. If I could release my dreams on DVD I'd make a fortune! They're as good as any movie.

I have that problem a lot-when I am researching stuff on the internet or if I found something interesting and I had no idea what time it was. This has been going on ever since I was little, I would always have a hard time falling asleep or things would keep me awake- like nightmares or if my body was in pain. Or if I had a bad cold. Even certain sounds would keep me awake in the middle of the night like storms, people's alarm clocks, going off, if someone snored (I don't like sleeping near people when they snore). I always like sleeping in quiet places and areas. Even when a room feels too cold (during winter season/air conditionings)- I always try to cover myself up under the sheets, covers and blankets as much as possible and I would even have a heater on. If I heard something going on in the middle of the night, that does effect me (sometimes I get frustrated like I can't avoid this) and even being in a cold room with too much air conditioning-that is hard for me to sleep in. Hearing sounds I can't avoid has effected me and frustrated me a lot even when I had to get up early. Because I am a light sleeper, I would wake up at around 11:00 or 11:30 AM. I'm not an early morning riser or even an early night sleeper.

I'm so bad at sleeping. It used to be that at least once a week I would either not be able to fall asleep for many hours, (or more often than once a week if some noises prevented me from dropping off initially, which was a huge problem in the last place I lived. I only get 2 chances of dropping off within the first hour of lying down, and if I fail both, I will inevitably be awake for several hours.) or I would wake up in the middle of the night and lay in bed awake until morning. I've started taking melatonin, and that's really helped, (although I still often wake up at 4-5am) and I also use sleeping pills if I REALLY need to sleep.. wish I could use them every night, but that's a bad idea. If it wasn't for my boyfriend complaining about us never getting enough sleep, I don't know if I would have ever prioritized it. It's not even because I'm thinking too much or want to do stuff, it's just that I lay there and nothing happens. And yes all my screens go orange at night and I don't drink coffee after 3pm.

A friend's daughter (not sure if she had a diagnosis) said she had trouble falling asleep because of her mind racing. A weighted blanket helped her tremendously. Not getting deep sleep (REM) affects one's mental and emotional health. www.quora.com/What-happens-to-someone-if-they-dont-get-any-REM-sleep. It might seem like sleep is a waste of time but without getting quality sleep, waking hours are less productive and contain less joy. Love your girlfriend's idea of setting an alarm to get ready for bed. From what I've read, many people don't have good sleep because they don't have a consistent evening routine that encourages sleep. Best wishes to everyone who has trouble sleeping.

Lately I’ve started writing down the things I’m thinking of that are keeping me awake. Sometimes it’s just stupid stuff that I can’t do anything about, other times it’s frustrations that I’m experiencing, that I really shouldn’t be worried about. I really need to escape the city & suburbs, tv and internet, just find a quiet place where I can’t hear traffic, or any outside noise, just the stillness of my surroundings. But alas, unless I win the lotto, my nightmares & frustrations will continue.

I can totally relate! I had it a bit more extreme than I do now, although am still a light sleeper. There was a time where I'd wake from having just gone to sleep, because I heard or sensed that my Wife opened her eyes. It freaked her out, but stuff like that was pretty common. I too feel like I can't get stuff done if I'm sleeping and tend to drag out the night until I'm exhausted.

I really like your video's, because I get what you're talking about and that's nice. I never had a diagnoses or something like that, but still I almost all of the time get where you're talking about and have experienced it myself. You made a video a long time ago about how you got your diagnoses and you talked about a online test in that video. I did that test 2 times and both of the times the scores where 40 or higher and 47 out of 50. I don't know if I should talk about this with my docter (I live in the Netherlands so you have something called a "huisarts" and if you are a bit sick or something like that you can go to them) or with my pych. My experience with sleep isn't that good. I'm just not tired and to hyperactive to go to sleep and when I fall asleep early then I wake up really early, because I wasn't tired. And when I sleep I wake up from a lot of stuff (mostly sounds)

My son and I are both horrible insomniacs. I was awake at night and slept all day when I was younger.. my body still wants to do it but I can't since I work 8-5. But las night I got to sleep at 3 which is horrible le for cortisol levels AND the heart. I'm buying a supplement to MAKE me sleep, so I can get the deep restorative sleep that is so critical to health. I'm hoping that if it works for me he'll fall to sleep too.. because my son's anxiety and isolation is severe and not improving. Deep sleep would help level the playing field for him. I write down all my ideas in Evernote and Chaos Control so that I can empty my head and sleep without having to worry that something will be forgotten or lost. It really helps me.

Sometimes I will go days without sleeping, and almost every night I have terrible, and usually violent night terrors. I don't know if my sleep or the night terrors directly correlate to my Aspergers, but i think it definitely has some involvement.

My 17 year old son has Aspberger's and hates to go to sleep. He always says it's a waste of time. So I showed him your video. When he was younger, it was difficult to get him to sleep but now, he wants to stay up all night. He just sits and reads on his lap top or plays games on it. Once he is asleep, he stays asleep until I wake him up, usually, and he always says he is tired even after sleeping 8 hours. I don't know if he is tired due to Aspberger's or due to his weight. He is 300 pounds plus and 6 footb5 inches. Thanks for your video.

My son (12) and Autism diagnosed, has always had sleep issues. As a baby he slept only 20 min during nap times ( friends babies slept 1-2 hrs) Many times I would take him in the car for a drive as it would help him fall asleep. Anyway, from that age until recently he took a couple of hours to fall asleep every evening. He is now taking Melatonin and it has really cut back that time he needs to achieve sleep. Living in the EU, a prescription is required. It has definately been a lifesaver (sleep saver! ) Do you have any tips or tricks for natural sleep remedies?

My boyfriend has asbies and he has to get at least 8 hours of sleep. Sometimes he gets into working at night and doesn't go to bed until like 5 am, so then he sleeps until noon, 1pm. Luckily he works from home and his company doesn't care when he works as long as he's making progress on his projects. He doesn't seem to have adhd. I have adhd, and sleep is hard for me. My mom says when I was a baby, like 1year old she'd leave the side of the crib down, because I'd climbed over the edge with it up high in the middle of the night. I didn't get hurt because I was a good climber. She figured it was safer to leave the side down. She also tried stacking baby gates, to keep me from leaving the bedroom area. She also mentioned that she'd leave a cup of milk for me in the fridge at night, because when I'd get out, I'd sometimes decide to make myself a bowl of cereal, and I'd once dropped the gallon jug making a huge mess. It wasn't until I was 21 that I could fall asleep at night. It didn't matter how much physical activity I did, my mind wouldn't shut off. At 21 I went to therapy and the doc suggested I get a notebook and do a brain dump before bed, and then leave the notebook on a blank page, so I could scribble additional thoughts with the lights out. Then tell myself, I've already written it down. That helped along with doing guided relaxation. I only had to listen to it a few times, and ever since then, as long as I'm exhausted, when I lay down, I fall asleep. I also take a chewable melatonin to help me be exhausted early at night because my bio rythem is off. But, I don't think it would matter if I hadn't done the therapy things mentioned before. I still only sleep 6 hours most nights. Occasionally, I'll have to get less and when I do that a few day in a row, I have to sleep at leat 7 hr and sometimes 8 to get back to feeling ok (like my brain isn't about to fall out of my head).

As a mother of an AS person l have noticed my son does not have set hours to sleep. He always had a hard time to fall asleep for any length of time, his mind remaines active all the time. D is now 30 but there has been a change his sleep pattern, he now requires more sleep but there are also more hours between sleeping. He will take one day a week to catch up on his missed sleep, waking-up cranking and unbearable till he comes around. D now has a job that is in the late evening till early morning so his sleeping can be better regulated. As a baby sleeping was not an issue till he was much older.

+Catherine Hatt Actually I suspect many Aspies like myself and maybe even your son from the description are nocturnal. This would explain why he has a night job and sleep/wake patterns are as a result better. All mammals at one time were nocturnal animals and perhaps that trait has reemerged in us and/or the activity of the day and irritation to sunlight might nudge us into the night. During the day I have a feeling of hiding and at night I have a feeling of wanting to attack. It is like an animal's biological setting that indicates what time is it best to go out and get food without becoming something else's food. Dan, look at sleep as a way to solve problems. As a chemist you might find it interesting that Mendeleev envisioned the Periodic Table in a dream and Kekule figured out that Benzine was a ring in a dream. www.famousscientists.org/7-great-examples-of-scientific-discoveries-made-in-dreams/ Sleeping not only increases the quality and quantity of waking work, but sometimes the sleeping condition of the brain can solve problems the wake condition of the brain can't.
