Me, an autistic person watching this at 2:20 am... yup, I can relate. It used to take me an hour to fall asleep, most of it spent tossing and turning with my mind buzzing. Now I'm on a mild sleep-aid, and it's closer to half an hour (though I can't sleep deeply through the night without it anymore, so trade-offs). My current sleep schedule is shifted forward a few hours beyond what is normal, but when I was in a bad bought of depression I ended up more or less completely nocturnal for quite some time.

Being religious with your routine, easier said then done. Having a normal job (day time hrs e.g. 9-5. Mon-fri.) I finally have one b4 I had shift work, has been helping lots taken me a few months but I'm not a vampire anymore. But second I slip, or have time off work I become nocturnal again. Taking melatonin (prescribed) long acting helped aswell + some sleep type herbal tea. Red light lamp helps (look it up). Some white noise, I prefer rain/storm on my ph dim the screen etc. Even a short course of heavy sleep tablets prescribed to kickstart initial change (on top of melatonin). For waking up to try get a sunrise alarm, a colleague told me it helps, and I'll set redundant alarms on my ph. In conclusion all this+ abit of time and consistency to adjust. Just make sure you maintain it even when, you have time off or on holidays once you've gotten a overall normal sleep pattern back, you feel league's better, I'm a early morning person (sorta) again through effort. Fyi I'm also on the spectrum. P.s I also got myself tested for sleep apnea as I have asthma aswell, I did have it fairly mod-high, so I've got a sleep ap machine aswell.

I have autism. I was diagnosed with it in October 2019 at the age of 28 and I do have problems with sleep. I would get up usually between midnight and 4am (routinely most of the time) just to go to the bathroom and sometimes it would take me up to 1hr 30mins to fall asleep. For waking up I took the liberty to set up three different alarms on my phone to go off: Mondays & Thursday: 8am, Tuesday and other days when necessary: 7:5am, Wednesday Friday Saturday & Sunday: 8:30am

Hate to cause an argument with you three but if you live in the UK as I do Dr Oyalo's herbs aren't available in the UK as Autism is a lifelong condition with no cure. When you get diagnosed as I did you'd be beyond medical help of any kind and all you'd be given is support and you learn to control and manage it. Drinking herbal drinks can only help you calm down. But they don't completely cure you of autism at all. My autism has remained the same since I got diagnosed and I have received much support from Manygates Clinic, friends and family.

When abnormal sleep is so common among a particular group whose negative symptoms are vastly outweighed by neutral symptoms that only become negative depending on the environment, I'm hesitant to call them sleep "problems." The are absolutely problems in the context of our society, but autism is nothing new and predates most of the factors that make today's society difficult for us. As a result, I want to understand why and how autism affects someone's sleep schedule and if there may be ways to accommodate that so that we can still get a healthy amount of sleep without having to rely on medication. If such a way doesn't exist, then I will admit that medication may be necessary, but you can understand why I might see that as fishy.

Agreed, plus how they insinuated that autistic traits like repetition are harmful at around the 1:00 mark, the use of blue and a young boy which reinforces stereotypes popularised by Autism Speaks, and used an illustration of a tired mother showing how the autistic child is an inconvenience. I’m pretty wary of this video.

@@raracool6531 right? im grateful to the video because i love learning more about this, but the choice of words ticked me off sometimes as a little too negative. same with the mother shown to be tired around the child. at least in the end of the video they suggested positive solutions to accomodate for this sleeping inconvenience. i don't like that they called it a "side effect", even if its a disturbance i rather it be called an "obstacle" or something that connotes the possibility of overcoming it. calling it a side effect tarnishes the image of what society already considers autism to be! otherwise the video was mostly informational.

🙄 I move to the south from the city. Its quite here. My daughter still take an hour to sleep. She has her own room and bed. Everything she need like the animation. I just want her to sleep so I can take care of my self. I'm grateful for this video. I will adjust our scheduling and double down on our routine. I will every night from this point on. Its challenging with it's only being me but I'm committed for us to get a good night rest. However I don't like that anything can wake people with Autism up and it's harder for them to go back to sleep. It's one thing if you're an adult that can function and find ways to put yourself back to sleep. it's another issue when it's a toddler with autism. Sleep is so important. I'm losing my mind with this.
@danielkl941
@danielkl941 2 жыл бұрын
Two suggestions: M 1. When you lie down to go to sleep, have your mind made up that simply lying there with your eyes closed is almost as good as being asleep. Have your mind made up that it almost doesn't matter if you fall asleep or not, because it feels good just to rest with your eyes closed. (This will make it much easier to fall asleep.) 2. Have your mind made up that once you crawl into bed, you will not make eye contact with any clock until your morning alarm goes off.

The moment I stopped worrying about the fact that I wake up during the night, it felt less dramatic. If you look at how the sleep cycles function and what there functions are, then you can be at peace with getting you first full uninterrupted sleep cycle under your belt, Then on to the second one as something separate and distinct. If you have to get up and use the bathroom, get a drink of water, do some stretches, it really does not matter as long as you find your way back and slip into that second cycle. Without getting all upset with the fact you are up. Take it one cycle at a time and stop worrying. Get three and it's a charm. Attitude does help. I suspect it is a natural stand on guard safety check we are blessed with from ancient times that kept us safe. So I have decided to embrace it as much as possible as long as I can get those three full cycles regardless of whether they are continuous or if I have to get up and be busy inbetween.

I've always been a poor sleeper. My hypersensitivity to textures (wrinkles are painful!) and sound (I hear everything and much of it hurts) has always made sleeping a nightmare. I get up often, I I struggle to sleep, and I struggle to know when I'm tired. I get woken up early by others' noise, and I've been punished for taking a nap for most of my life, that now that I'm "allowed," I feel such intense anxiety that I can't sleep. Sleep aids have helped: sleep headphones, blanket clips, white noise, weighted blankets, they've all been a boon, but they only work when they work, and they don't make my insomnia go away. The lack of sleep makes me more liable to be over stimulated and meltdown, which recapitulates the existing issues I have getting to sleep at all. They feed into each other, and when you rarely get a chance to have restful sleep, it feels like you'll never ever find the time. Here's hoping I actually get sleep this year...!

I am on the spectrum and melatonin has little to no effect on me so I have to take higher doses of it but long term usage and higher dosage of melatonin has link to dementia so its a lose lose with that. Physical exhaustion sometimes helps but also can exacerbate the sleeplessness and you wake up feeling worse because your mind never fully rested.

He gave me anti depressants. He said I may feel suicidal over the ext couple of weeks, but that isn't the pills, it would be my condition worsening. I looked at the side effects before taking one that evening and it said potential feelings of suicide. Meds often have reverse effect on autists. I didn't take them.

They missed one of the most important things. Biochemical defects in autistic People that limit converting important vitamins, minerals and fatty acids into their final bio-active forms. Such as converting vitamine b6 (pyridoxine) to p-5-p. ALA into DHA and EPA. Folic acid into methyl folate. These all have impact on numerous hormones and neurotransmitters that cause attention deficits, anxiety, sleep difficulties. I have improved a lot of these issues. Just by not taking the doctors often lousy advice for granted but by being curious and adopt a trial and error approach into testing supplements, breathing, exercise, meditation, yoga to influence all those biochemical systems.

@Wesley Hinson thats great to hear!! Providing your son with the right supplements can make a big difference. I only like to point out one thing. In most cases supplements do not take away all symptoms. When autistic kids get older more complex skills are required in life such as reading and mirroring other People behaviour, the ability to integrate pieces of information into one coherant whole etcetera. For sure there can be improvements as a consequence of living healthy and taking supplements but it can't take this away completely. As an adult with high functioning autism i experienced this for myself.

Mijn lieve schat! Dankjewel voor deze informatie. Ik ben heel erg benieuwd en geïnteresseerd in autisme. I can't sleep because everything bothers me, my own body bothers me, sleeping position, sounds, light, too hot when I have a thin sheet over me, too cold if it's not. My thoughts keep me up, I also have bad acid reflux, I'm so tired of this (I guess puns intended) I feel like I can not sleep at night, but I can sleep better during the day. I can go days with no sleep even though I'm exhausted, and extremely fatigued... I just wanna sleep like a normal person... nights have become my own personal hell I live with every night..

Lot of people have stress and sleep issues,do not need a big diagnosis of a disorder to validate not sleeping,, what do you do in the day time? Do you eat healthy,do you learn new things, get physical activity,fresh air, sunshine??? Are you lost in day to day life ?I know that feeling,,,trust Jesus,read proverbs,palms,to know what Jesus teaches, and move ahead with living till you get to Heaven prayer for you now, AMEN

Exercise during the day would be a lot easier if being autistic in public was treated like a normal thing instead of a threat to public safety. Going outside is a heightened *risk* to autistic people.

Sure, but as an autistic adult female with an autistic child, both of us still awake at 1am....can I just say, Here is the real problem- STOP expecting everyone to adhere to a neurotypical schedule, and world. It happens to be a fact, that autistic or not, about half the world's population are so called 'night people'. Well, guess what? It's actually genetic, and NOT a 'preference'. Yes, it's true. We did DNA tests for this. Most people have no idea about this fact. It's genetic, and it cannot be changed. Trying to force night people, or autistic people, to be awake all day, and sleep at night is only harming them further. Let us do it whenever we feel like it. I sleep in till like 12pm, or 1pm, and I let my child do the same. Then we stay up late. We have embraced working from home round the world since covid. Well, guess what? It's time to take that even further, and challenge all the popular narratives, and restructure society completely. Human beings actually naturally have varying sleep/wake cycles. Historically, people would sleep, wake up, go back to sleep, wake up etc. They didn't do a day awake, night sleep thing like modern humans do. And it's proven to be a huge failure, so it's time for it to be scrapped. If you are a 'morning person', well, good for you. Contrary to what you assume, most people are not the same as you. You keep that schedule, but don't expect the rest of us to. Little addition- Many autistic people actually react differently to medication. It can actually affect us the complete opposite of what it is intended to, and it makes sense knowing all I've written above. Melatonin makes me wide awake, and more anxious for example. I can't use it. Caffeine makes me very ill, and sleepy. Can't have it either. So we need to once again, stop focusing on what works for neurotypicals, and instead think about what we can do differently.
