Ben Hornigold serves as another shadow archetype to Edward: both were privateers who ended up jobless, thus taking for piracy in other to survive and end up joining secret orders due to their ideals. But Edward, despite being dissappointed with his idealism, never stopped believing on freedom, thus kept moving forward, and being honest about being a pirate. Hornigold never abandoned his privateer mentality and gave up on notions of freedom, seeking order and control, along with being stuck in the past. So Hornigold is what Edward could have become if he gave up on freedom, but also if he accepted the King's pardon.

Something I love about the good Assassin Creed games. The idea that both these sides are wrong, but are right enough to kill for their ideals. The definition of Chaos and Anarchy versus Order and Tyranny. Kenway is an amazing window into that dichotomy, even if he chooses a side in the end. Someone aligned with neither, but has gotten wrapped up in their power struggles. Though he wishes for the kinds of freedom the Assassins dream of, in practice Nassau was nothing more than a sick, slow death. No path. No order. No ambition except the next drink, meal, and lay. The Templars wished to have what the governments of the world have now. A way to spy on anyone they are connected to at any time of their choosing for whatever reason they make up. Hornigold saw that anarchy was a fools venture. You can't sustain people on freedom alone. As long as there's one person organizing people into working a plot of land for food, there will be a power imbalance. What Hornigold would have eventually learned is the Templars breed or shackle people to those lands. Tragedy he never got the chance to see it. Another casualty to Extremes with no wisdom of Balance.

Historically the real Benjamin Hornigold was a true kingsman, until he became desperate. He, amidst the pressures of facilitating the creation of the new pirate republic of Nassau, had remained adamant on his reluctance to plunder and scuttle English ships. Some among his cohorts lacked such reservations, and thus garnered quite the following themselves. Eventually, the potential for profit and wealth overwhelmed his endearment to the crown and he set siege to English merchants and slave traders. Benjamin Hornigold did sign the king's pardon, and he did go on to work as a privateer under Woodes Rogers. His death was due to shipwreck. The golden age of piracy at this time is a really interesting thing to look into. Privateers turning into pirates, and sailors and merchants feeling disenfranchised under English rule -- under the German king George, none the less. Black Flag obviously dramatizes a lot of this, but it's nonetheless an interesting insight into the lives of those men.

I liked Hornigold. He had the sense to recognize what a pathetic excuse for civilisation Nassau was, the prudence to call for a pacifist approach when King George II was becoming serious about ending piracy (which historically he succeded with), and in the end chose sides wisely. The so called "pirate republic" was a dark stain and blight on the world, a nest of vice, debauchery, crime, murder and the basest of human existence. While Black Flag has enjoyable gameplay, fighting for Nassau was not pleasurable or fulfilling for me. But I am more for the Templars than Assassins after all. AC Rogue was far superior in sense of noble aspiration to me.
@Shinobi_Fox6 ай бұрын
Can't comment on the real one but I don't like Hornigold in AC. Yes he had the sense to move on from Nassau, but he was one of the few leaders of the pirate community there and it's totally fair to argue that the failure of Nassau was his personal failure to be a real leader or nation-builder. I think one thing to compare it to is when Kenway takes Great Inagua as his personal hideout. He can (and does) build it up with infrastructure by investing his personal wealth into it, that's the foundation of nation-building and it's needed to build a thriving community. If a place like Nassau was to thrive then the pirates (especially it's leaders like Hornigold, Thatch and Vane) should have been investing some of their takings into building up the shanty town with real housing, shops, and also hiring doctors and workers and starting plantations to generate passive resources for wealth instead of relying on just piracy. In the end, Nassau's failure in the story is in large part because of him and it's kind of petty that he blames or preaches to Edward on his deathbed when his mistakes with Nassau and his betrayal of his friends overshadow Edwards choices by a large margin.
@alexanderb57266 ай бұрын
@@Shinobi_Fox What Edward built in Great Inagua was a smidge above a thieves den, brothels and gambling. Hardly a successful long-term venture himself. The nature of Nassau is what prevented investment from being of any use. It was an idea of an anarchic "free" society run by pirates. It would never be capable of retaining the elements of a functioning community. That's what Hornigold understood and Kenway didn't.
