James/Mary was an important part of the game and to Edward's life. If it wasn't for her, he wouldn't have changed his ways and seen the damned path he was taking. The hallucination scene was what basically sealed the fact she made a huge impact on him and how close she was to him. James Kidd/Mary Read seemed to embody all the fanatical aspects of the Assassin Brotherhood that Edward tried to avoid. Her zealous devotion to the assassins, flowery rhetoric for her love of liberty despite her remorseless glee at killing people who even try to help her like those two guards she slaughtered, and her over preachy nature over how Edward needed to devote his life to their murderous organization to fight another murderous organization in the name of some greater good. In a way, if Edward devoted himself to the Brotherhood completely, he would have become her.

Very well then. Listen to Mary's words. Her blatant description of her organization being: "we kill people". Her frustration at Edward preventing her from killing targets and her glee at slaughtering her enemies. Fun fact, I am actually related to the Peter Beckford that's in this game 😄 he's my great plus a few uncle lol he really did own a plantation in Jamaica and became the acting governor there and was the wealthiest plantation owner in the country when he died. Wish that wealth came down the family line but the history is cool enough 😊

Nassau just makes me sad. The three founders all dying the way they did. Mary from sickness, Thatch while boarding the ship, and Hornigold betraying everyone else and Edward having to kill him.

Man all the characters deaths in this game still get me fucked up. They were so well written and I got attached to them so much, but especially Mary and her death. What a great fucking game.

Honestly wanted to stop playing when she died during my first playthrough, whenever I remember this game it goes- everything before Mary's death and everything after.. Black Flag had some of the greatest side characters and character development in the franchise

It's incredible seeing how much james/Mary changed Edward and made him realise how much he was destroying himself

It’s games like this one that make me happy that fanfiction exists, because I honestly love this game to death, but I hate that Mary died. It sucks that Edward lost almost all of his friends, but Mary’s death was the saddest. I understand they were trying to be historically accurate to a certain degree, but it’s also a game, fictional, they could’ve easily changed it.

34:23 fucking hell... that will always be an instant tear jerker. It was already extremely sad when just playing the game, but I also played that my 16yr old cat was put down. I miss you little guy

The very first game I ever played on my PS4 was Ac4 Blackflag and like, I was into the game but got even more into it when James/Mary showed up. She was my fictional crush for the longest time.

when Mary is in James form, her hair looks so cool. I keep telling my parents that I want to style my hair like James kidd's. they always tell me no. I even showed them the image😡

When I started the game, I was kinda suspicious of Mary that she was a girl due to her voice and her body. But when she reveled her gender I said " I KNEW IT!" Like 100 times.

Considering Edward's crimes against the Assassins, he's very lucky that Mary was such a big believer in second chances otherwise he'd have been dead. Mary was definitely one of the highlights of this game, in my opinion. I was angling for Edward to finally listen to her, join the Assassins and do something worthwhile for ages and the fact that it took her dying to finally knock some sense into him was heartbreaking.
