The one thing I loved about the very first Assassin's Creed game was the challenge to sneakily assassinate just the evil bad guy from above in each chapter and then escape with minimal carnage. The original bad guys in AC1 were legitimately evil.

I feel like that was the classic games' worst aspect, story wise. It's supposed to be a gray conflict, each side with their ideologies and flaws, but the Templars from AC1 up to Ezio's Trilogy are legit like cartoon villains. Thankfully in some future games they gave the Templars more nuance and understanding rather than just being cliché le evil bad guys

@@Pedro_Le_Chef Do you mean the game engin Unity or the game engine they used for Assassin's Creed Unity? If you meant the engine Unity that's not true. The AC Unity stealth kills were honestly peak. They were well animated and FELT precise. Like Arno knew exactly the weak spots to target, as an assassin should. Definitely wish they brought back that variety of both running kills and stealth kills and different animations for each. Also you gotta be able to manually engage and retract the blade. That's just a staple of any assassins creed game imo. Combat in the older games was simple but it worked for what it was at the time. I think they nailed it in Unity if only they offered more variety in enemies and smoothed out the gameplay and animations for combat. Overall Ubisoft should have stuck with the Unity systems and built off of them to make them smoother.

Unity was great in that the first few hours Arno was a mess, i couldn't control his parkour and his combat was atrocious, but over time he got better and better and by the end of the game his parkour & combat skills were second to none. i felt the same way with Mirage, though the animations were more clunky than in Unity, but at first Basim was getting bodied by 1 or 2 guards, by the end, and by utliziing all his skills in combat, he was wiping the floor with entire squads.

Unity flopped because it had a disastrous launch technically and because the story was incredibly boring. AC3 felt epic because they interwove it with American Revolution and Conor was integral to that struggle. For some baffling reason with Unity they set it against the backdrop of the French Revolution and then....... ignored it completely to tell a pound store version of Romeo and Juliet. BUT in terms of the parkour and the assassinations it was probably best in class.
@TranquilAssassin

The novelty wore off FAST for me. Their adherence to history or geography is practically a joke. They've even given up the pretense in recent releases. On top of that there is the lame scifi plot which means you are *never* playing an assassin. Instead you're playing some dork called Desmond or whatever from the future playing the assassin. It's a completely needless and jarring disconnect from the game proper. They should reboot this series and dump all the scifi shit entirely. Just have some mysteries around the place, like you might find in RDR2 and leave it at that.

@drxym The parts with Desmond are part of the game itself and the story is really good with an underlying narrative. There doesn't need to be an adherence to actual history because this is still a Sci-Fi story, it's not our world and it never was. Even AC1 had Sci-Fi elements and if you disagree with it being that way then it means you were never a fan of the series and should be looking for a History Simulator of some sort because that's not Assassin's Creed.

Totally agree about the hidden blade kills. Half the time, Basim does the stupid “swipe” animation where they phase their whole hand through an enemy, and there’s still the age-old problem of guards seemingly stopping in their tracks just to get stabbed. And you’d think sliding before assassinating someone would trigger a slide-stab animation (something that they’ve animated and can just recycle), but nope, Basim just snaps into the regular standing stab animation. Ubisoft games feel AA

It's wild to think they haven't innovated on environmental gameplay. The crowd options in AC2 made you feel so stealthy and they just forgot how to try on the stealth options. Last time they tried was Unity with more interiors to navigate and the disguise option. Even AC1 had the prayer hands. Imagine if they'd thrown all those stealth options into this game, with some environmental discretion options to interact with the world which causes a distraction or obfuscates or gives you access to something else.

If you are having problems with Basims momentum while running. One great tip to solve this is to go into your control settings and tinker with them. By default the sprint on controller is binded to the left analogue stick and is set to toggle to sprint but you can change this very easily. It has the option to hold to sprint instead of toggle this way you always know that when you are holding the button down you are sprinting. For me as well I binded sprint to the right trigger which made the whole experience of running through the city feel far more satisfying. There are lots of settings you can change to make things feel more like the older games. Plus one bonus fact which I have appreciated is the amount of animations both combat finishers and assassination animations that are taken directly from AC unity since most people forget that these games are made using the Anvil Engine. Overall loved this game I agree it is a middle ground between the different genres of games in the series

9:40 I think it's mainly because most of the time Basim goes for the stomach or chest while assassinating someone and after that he throws them to the ground as everyone looks while Ezio mostly went for the neck with a quick stab and by the time the target slowly fell to the ground, Ezio could go into hiding in the crowd again. It's obvious what's more satisfying here and who's the best Assassini of all time.

I've played for about 7 hours already and I have to say I love it. The characters can be a bit extra, and I think Jake hit the nail right on the head when he said the assassinations didn't feel right. That's exactly my biggest problem in the game. Assassinations never felt locked to an animation. Like in the older games if you walked up to a guard you could nonchalantly stab him in the neck and keep walking away and it felt seemless. I know they could fix this and make it better if we let them know these problems with the games. They listened to what we wanted from a new assassins creed, we should see how much they'll listen to actual fans of the franchise. Ac1 and 2 were before me but I've been playing since three and even played the remake of the ezio trilogy. I'm excited to see what ubi does with it, even if they ruin it

I'm with you on AC going back to its roots. The 1st one was tedious and repetitive but I thought it was cool and interesting how they tied in historical events and figures into the game, especially so in the AC2 games. I tried playing the newer open world one and they were just a bit overwhelming for me. The exploration is interesting but can be burdensome. This is definitely a welcome change to AC fans like us.

I believe for an Assassin’s Creed game to be great, we need to really be put in the protagonists shoes in the setting they’re in & the atmosphere has to be realistic. For me, the previous games that have amazed me were in simple connections that the games do because of how well put together the entire world was. Example: AC2 as Ezio you would get random mini games to hug or handshake someone mid cutscene creating more immersion with the player & character, AC3 when you would do a viewpoint music would start playing as you moved up to the final moment when you synch, Or Ac4 as you get off the boat to a new island the camera kinda moves off center to show you the island & all the objectives you can complete on it! As a old fan, those are minor experiences I recall gave me much enjoyment to the assassin’s creed franchise instead of a mindless open world, or repetitive side quests that seem like homework rather than adventure 😅.

For me, it's how much focus they apply to the depicted era. And if that means taking a bit of focus away from the Assassin story itself, that actually makes it better for me. What I loved about Black Flag was that it basically didn't even care about telling a story about the assassins, instead it wanted to tell you a story about the golden age of piracy reaching its end.

The music that plays as you approach a viewpoint is easily one of my favorite little things from AC3. It evokes such a strange feeling. I can't put it into words. Those long, drawn-out notes feel suspenseful, which is fitting when you hear it in the early stages of the game as the war is building up. Those notes also have a courageous sound, and even a sort of depressing sound, all of which are fitting for both the American Revolution and for Connor's story. I get chills every time it plays.

Initially started this series with AC2 and absolutely fell in love. Somewhere in between Brotherhood and Revelations I played AC1 and thats when I trully became enveloped into this series as a whole. Very much like yourself, I feel the same way on your key notes. Getting to play Origins with Bayek was fun and nice to see the key roots of where the Assassins come from, but I feel like that game (for all its glory) pushed us in the wrong direction with this series. I feel a turn in the tide with Mirage. I’m going in with very little expectations but from what i’ve seen, I’m actually already enjoying it. People say Basim is slow but really I think he works somewhat better than Altair and Ezio. What made their movements look more appealing and fluid is when we learned to break the movement by using side and back ejects properly. I remember the first time seeing what AC2 parkour was actually capable of and it was so cool because it made it look like there was a learning curve to movement and really distinguish how you play. Basim has flashier moves but not having those side and back ejects are what limit him. Overall, I love this series but ever since Unity its been all over the place with what was good and bad and honestly I just hope this “return to roots” is what gets us back to the games we love

Except the combat system is absolute shit. It doesn't give you enough time to recognise whether you have to parry or dodge. By the time you've seen the colour indicator, you've already been hit, and the parry mechanic in general is unforgiving. I get that we want a challenge, but it's flawed. Completely sapped the fun out of the game for me. When on a mission to liberate Ali or whatever his name is, I was doing great until one guard saw me. Just a regular guard kicked my arse for the reasons I stated above. I had to turn it off. Unity had the best combat by far. It was challenging when surrounded, but one guard isn't going to beat you, and so he shouldn't. The parrying also felt good. Playing this after finishing Spider-Man 2 really showed how bad Ubisoft are. I want a refund!

Like AC II was rinse and repeat throughout the game. Everyone wanted to go back to that style of game and leave the RPG style and now they’re still complaining. I’ve had every AC and I’m sure I’ll find it fun and sell well. The history aspect has always been my and many others fave part of AC. Copping Ubisoft+ for this and the crew. Very excited Just compare the replies here to r/assassinscreed it’s clear this is what hardcore fans want and who ubi are appealing to here. I like Unity best when it comes to those quick hidden blade kills, you can toss a smoke bomb and just go to work on four guys then disappears, though I never thought it was realistic to just one-tap someone like that. Here it looks like Basim is putting a lot of force behind his strikes which gives more killing power. It also seems he takes a moment to consider how and where to strike which might speak to his inexperience being an assassin. Plus this is AC1-era hidden blade which I think has to be engaged before you use them. Overall that gives a little bit of a lag which breaks the momentum. I've been looking forward to this one, might gives it a whirl and see.

Would be good if they had their own nemesis system like the Shadow games. Having enemies that could drop a smoke bomb and do their best to run away and you can track them down before they leave but if they do, they return stronger etc but actually have names etc would make the concept of murdering pointless enemies a little more focused and interesting. Challenge I have with AC is the repetition of killing enemies without any great satisfaction feels counterintuitive for an Assassination based game…

I miss having 2 hidden blades and being able to equip them as a weapon and also holding down square or x to make the blades come out while not in combat. Also all tho origins was amazing it took along time to level all the way up and by the time you did you already did most the stuff in the game and with all the games after I feel like I’m playing the same game with different designs and skill trees. I was expecting the graphics and physics to be a little bit better but mostly my problem is that ever since odyssey, dialogue and some quests have taken more of a goofy or not serious tone while origins was the last game to have a dark and serious tone to it.

Based on your review, I would say I'm probably also a weirdo. I love the old games for how they felt, not how they played. The assassination/parkour animations, camera angles, cinematics, etc. what were what the older games did really well. I think that's what those games were really about and they got lost in RPG land. I like the way they added more side missions and stuff but the rpg aspect isnt working at least ubisofts rpg mechanics compared to the likes of Bethesda. I just don’t get why they can’t make a story as meaningful as Ezio’s and the combat mechanics of Conor with the parkour system of Arno just fully fixed this time and the side quests/map size of the new games. I guess I was in the minority, but I loved every second of the last three games. Really enjoyed the huge sprawling maps. I've been a fan of this series since it debuted in 2007. But I think they would be better off with dropping those between smaller/tighter releases. Ubisoft has this problem where when they release a game with mechanics that work, they just copy + paste that formula for the next few games in any franchise. Until inevitably the community gets burned out. So space those things out more, Ubi!

To me, I treated this as AC Origins 2. I knew what I was getting into when I was buying this game. They simply modified their current formula to feel the void of the true AC experience the other rpg games were lacking. They were never a trilogy, this is simply the 4th game. Since Odyssey and Valhalla are in my book a spin-off set of games capturing a combat focused experience, while Mirage is a step back in the right direction following Origins path, built from the current Valhalla system, but building on it where it lacked the “Assassin’s Creed”

I’ve enjoyed all of the AC games. You knew that once they killed off Desmond that things would have to change. A large part of the enjoyment of those older ones was the connection between the modern character with the historical one. I enjoy the RPG ones and I’m enjoying Mirage. Yes, Basim feels a little slow but he’s not a warrior like the last characters. And Altair wasn’t exactly fast either. Ezio and Connor were only a little better. I honestly think expectations were to recreate what we all felt with the first game when it launched and you just can’t recreate that. Mirage is a solid edition by a smaller studio under Ubisoft. A big problem I have with the new AC trilogy is the accelerated sense of progression. You're constantly changing weapons and stealth is so tedious that you're essentially encouraged to go in balls-to-the-wall. It also seems like they were trying to go in a souls-like direction for AC with the lock ons and massive i-frames dodges gave you, but that's just not what AC is. It seems the studio just doesn't want to make conventional AC games anymore but they're forced to do so by Ubisoft. I'd be happy if they did 1 more truely conventional game with an amazing story and left the series alone to move onto another IP, maybe even to fully realize the souls-like gameplay they clearly want to replicate

It looks like an actual Assassin's Creed game. I've always been under the camp that the last three are not AC games. While Origins could "technically" get a pass because it's the birth of the creed, the other two are solely using the brand name to sell you more open world content. You could literally name one "Odyssey: the Voyage of Mithos" and "Valhalla: Eivor's Legacy", and they would have the same impact. It's good to see an Assassin's Creed game that is once again about Assassins.

I then bought Origins, but the controller layout was completely different from III, so I kinda left it since I was having a hard time getting used to the new layout. At the time I was also playing Kena, and after a few weeks of playing Kena, I realized the layout was similar, so I hopped on Origins, but Valhalla Ultimate was on sale for around $40, so I decided to buy it and started on that one instead. I'm really used to the new AC style, so looking at your gameplay, and knowing you're avoiding spoilers, it seems like you say, a "watered down" version. I'll keep an eye on it for a sale since I'm still on Valhalla and apparently nowhere near finishing it since I'm always getting sidetracked with all the side quests and missions I keep finding on my way to trying to finish the story.

I believe origins to be the absolute best! The rich history, bringing back that civilization is just amazing!

i wish i could enjoy games like that. for me games seem similar in way too many ways, i recognise certain type of missions instantly and get demotivated to keep playing them. luckily the gaming gods blessed us with baldur's gate 3 this year. i'm finally having fun like i did when i started out gaming :D

@@luierdaneenpamper3877 Same here... on the plus side, I spend way less money on games now! 90% of them I look at and realize "oh it's one of those _____ games... I don't need to play that." But yeah, BG3 deserves every bit of the praise it's getting. I played about 60 hours in early access and knew it would be good, but had no idea it would blow up like this. Glad to see it though!

Thanks for the review Jake :) As someone who has always enjoyed the pre-massive-trilogy games of AC... i am actually very happy with this release and am hoping to get to it sooner rather than later... Origins, odyssey and valhalla were great games but not what i was looking for in a AC game... i finished all 3 but left so much unfinished because there was just too much filler... I truly hope this will bring me back into the old school vibes of the original AC games.... especially the time we spent with Ezio :)

@@I_enjoy_some_things honestly... I went through the introduction with the Isu from the staff (can't remember her name) but kinda stopped not long after getting back into the animus... so never completed it.. Is it worth it? I'll have to take a loot at it and go back to it!

I've played all of the Assassin's Creed games over the years and I've enjoyed them all for different reasons. Ezio's games are by far my favourite--just because of the vibe, the setting, and the gameplay. But I also enjoyed Odyssey, even though it didn't feel like a classic Assassin's Creed game and at times the sheer size of it was overwhelming (I'm a Greek mythology nerd, so that probably had something to do with it). Ultimately, I'm in favor of AC going back to basics. The older games are classics for a reason and I'd love to see characters like Ezio come back again.

Don't get me wrong, it is awesome that Mirage has gone back to it's roots + the game does look amazing, but I still prefer the RPG games because I'm not too big on stealth + what I love about the RPG games is, they don't feel limited compared to the older Assassin's Creed games & I like big, open world games because you gave more to explore. I'm not sure if I'll get Mirage (yet), but if I get a chance, I may try the game out first.

I’ve been playing AC since day 1 and I have played every single AC game. To me I appreciate what they bring and it seems as if the fan base just finds a way to trash the franchise. Just like you said, better things are to come! In all honesty, I wish they would fully remaster all the original AC games. I would pay 50$ any day to play these games on the systems we have today!

So I played AC Mirage and just to let everyone know I am not a speed player, I tend to take forever to play a game and in most cases I never finish the main story with over 200 hrs played. I played AC Mirage and in 5 days with about 40 hrs played I completed everything, all collectibles, side missions, trophies, ubisoft connect challenges and rewards, and the main story. I don't really see replayablity for it either. It was a fun game with a decent story but it was short, I feel it would have been better with 2 more areas of equal size and content to the base game because as I am a slow game player most people will probably beat it in 20 to 30 hrs.

I like the game overall and just ignore the bird for the most part to give me the old version more. The assassination and swordplay is a bit clunky like you said and for the heavy guys, all you can do is dodge their blow and hit their backs. Would be nice to just make them beefier to hits as an option. Overall loving the experience and call back memories so far! I'd give it a 4 out of 5

the combat is pretty sad, they could do a hybrid between the old style of AC and the new style of AC combat. Just my opinion spaming left click and some time to time the parry is not that good.

Agreed. After Syndicate i lost interest so its nice to see a return. Assassin's didn't need to have the over complex gameplay as what drove the series was the story. Nice that they're returning and after skipping Valhalla and its predecessor I think i'll give this one a shot
