I don't like the choice of the male protagonist for the game, but for those criticizing the female ninja, look in to the onna-bugeisha. I know it's weird to think of women in soldier positions or acting in the capacity of warriors, for biological reasons and so on, but it did happen. It's history. Onna-musha (女武者) is a term referring to female warriors in pre-modern Japan. These women fought in battle alongside samurai men. They were members of the bushi (warrior) class in feudal Japan and were trained in the use of weapons to protect their household, family, and honour in times of war. They also have an important presence in Japanese literature, with Tomoe Gozen and Hangaku Gozen as famous and influential examples representing onna-musha.

I guess I can understand the backlash because people are way too sensitive about everything nowadays. I don't really care about the race of the MC, I never did. I just care about good gameplay and story. There are going to be two types of backlash from two groups. One group will be complaining about the lack of Japanese male representation(fair enough). The other will be the people(with malicious intent) who hate any black characters in any franchise. Either way, if Ubisoft doesn't bring their A-game here, the AC franchise will be in trouble. There were a lot of haters for AC Origins when they added a black MC. But it got drowned out because AC Origins was a fairly good game with a good story. Also, I do understand your point that it was a great opportunity for them to introduce a Japanese MC. It would have been more risk-free.

They could have made Hanzo the main protagonist and everyone would be hyped. I do think people are overreacting though, its not that big of a deal

On principle, for me at least, it's a hard pass. I got to respect your honesty and optimism though, considering how flagrantly open the gaming industry has been about its agendas and motives over quality while still charging out the wazoo.
