I am Japanese. This whole fiasco started because UBI claimed a big lie that this game is based on Japanese history or that Yasuke was a samurai, which is a historical fact. It would have been a different reaction if I had said that this game was fiction from the beginning. A closer look at the cause of the uproar reveals that a British elementary school English teacher who came to Japan about 10 years ago discovered Yasuke and began falsifying history by altering the contents of Yasuke's Wikipedia and Encyclopædia Britannica. With the release of this game, it was discovered that Lockley had written his own book based on his own altered Wikipedia and had presented a fabricated history of Japan to the world. Now in Japan, this fabrication of history by foreigners is more of a problem than UBI. But such things do not matter to the people of the world. It does not matter how Japan is treated. Most people would think it doesn't matter. That is how human beings are. Whether it is historical fact or fiction is of no concern to gamers. Incidentally, Hirayama, a self-proclaimed historian, claims to be a university professor, but actually holds only a master's degree. He does not have a doctorate. Somehow he works for a university of health sciences. Furthermore, his argument follows the same logic as before: “Nobunaga gave Yasuke a wakizashi(dagger) and a house. This alone does not prove that he is a samurai, and in the end it is all speculation and possibility. In other words, was Yasuke a samurai? Was he or was he not? No one knows. We don't have enough material to make a judgment. If that is properly understood, it doesn't matter if there are fictions about blacks being samurai.

This still falls under the idea of asking for changes is different than asking for a cancellation. The sad thing is many don't know the difference and are calling for a full cancellation. I agree with most of your points Jay I really do... It's so refreshing listening to people who talk rationally on the internet. One thing I didn't agree with is just making Naoe the only playable character reason being it's based on the idea of avoiding contraversy when I can argue that people will complain no matter what it's up to the writers to choose what they want not the execs or people who want F or M. They should do what's best for the narrative, and as I see it Yasuke has the more interesting Narrative or story as suppose to Naoe. I can already guess what her character arc will be whereas Yasuke you can't really because it could go so many ways where as Naoe just has the standard revenge story which is made interesting with Yasuke being involved but helping her. AC Hexe will have a FEMALE Only as a protagonist for its own narrative reasons (Witch hunts) and AC Shadows has its own. Whether a gender works or not really depends on the writer or narrative in question. Like how Syndicate could have had Evie only and it wouldn't lose anything but in Odyssey it would have made as much sense as AC Shadows having both characters playable with their own stories like Alexios should be the mercenary because their step father who trains them is a TRADITIONALIST to a fault that doesn't make sense if Kassandra is the mercenary she should be Deimos but Deimos must also be playable. That already sounds like a more interesting game just like AC Shadows. Anyways that's just my thoughts, I would like to know what you think and keep up the great videos. It's sad not many people mention the digital only crisis we are speeding towards... Hopeful things change.

Not only am I now paying an absolute boat load for a game, but I technically don’t even own it! Because of that alone, I am super picky with games and hate when I get one I don’t enjoy. We need to stop trying to change a game and go back to buying and owing rights. That’s my biggest gripe. It’s basically online without being online. I play all games offline. As of right now, the current biggest issue with the AC Shadows controversy is the recent apology post that Ubisoft just put up on Twitter/X. At first, they simply lied about the game being historically accurate in order to hype it up, but then in their apology, they just straight-up backpedaled and admitted that their game isn't meant to be a factual representation of history. Like, guys, why didn't you just come out with that sentiment in the first place? Why do all of that pretentious "historical accuracy" bragging about Yasuke, only to turn around and say that him being a samurai was debatable? And on top of that, the person you turned to to check if he was a samurai or not is that Lockley person who is currently known for being a fraudulent historian who basically wrote a fanfiction about Yasuke being a samurai. How the hell does a game company become so lazy that they rely on an irreputable source for their research? Now, I do want to come forth and say that I'm not personally bothered by the idea of depicting Yasuke as a samurai. The man himself has his life mostly surrounded in mystery, so if Ubisoft wants to depict him as a samurai, then sure, whatever. What I DO wish, however, was that the company was more honest and upfront about who Yasuke was, instead of trying to parade around his life as a samurai as being historically accurate when it clearly isn't.

My opinion is that Ubisoft deliberately chose yasuke on purpose in order to A, distract gamers from actual issues, B to get easy ESG points, and C to deflect any criticism of yasuke with the racisim and historical character card. I don’t even mind that he’s not Asian but it’s feels so forced. They had naoe right there but Ubisoft clearly hasn’t put they misogyny behind them and refuse to let carry the game. Honestly whether yasuke is a good character or not, it doesn’t matter to me anymore. I’m voting with my wallet and on my principles and not buying the game and I suggest to anyone who feels remotely similar to do the same.

I know this is a month old but you brought up something that I kind of have an issue with. You claim that's why they picked Yasuke, but you don't actually know that. For all we know, perhaps the develops genuinely wanted to pick Yasuke since he's a fairly unique figure in Japanese history. My point is that it seems that even if they picked Yasuke for genuine reasons, they would get accused of being woke or being disrespectful. It makes it that telling a story with Yasuke is now impossible without getting hate. How can Yasuke appear in this game in a way that won't get accusations of being woke? The only way would be to make him a background character and not show him in the marketing. And I think that's unfair.

I study sociology and history, and my perspective is that of a young left-wing queer person who lived in Japan previously, but was born in and currently live in the West, so understand my perspective is skewed, as anyone else's is. No one is objective. There is a HUGE misconception regarding any discussion about "culture." You bring up several times things like "the west pushing their ideals" or "they have a different culture," things like that when making your points. In making these claims, you ARE doing a form of generalisation of a group. Saying "Japanese people are super polite" sounds positive, but it's still a descriptive statement you are making about Japanese people. The narrative about "the West pushing their ideals" is evidentially nonsense. How often do you see all of "the west" agreeing with anything at all? There's this mythology people have about Japanese people like it's some different species, that's either subhuman or these perfect embodiments of artistic passion, and neither is the case. Japanese people are just like everyone else. "Culture" doesn't influence nor does it excuse one's behaviour. Murder is bad regardless of what "culture" you're a part of, as is pedophilia, as is slavery. Any society with these has had or currently had a large group of people from these societies shouting down these systems that allow these things, independent of "the West" (which seems to be everything that isn't exactly Japan, I never see anyone talking about China in this way for example). Culture influences art, it influences manners and language, but it doesn't influence human decency. Also, in the age of the Internet where everyone is connected all the time, everyone is constantly mingling with people all over. I don't like this treatment of Japanese companies and people like they're the divine authority on art, and I don't like the alternative of treating them like they're a bunch of exactly two kinds of people. The outrage at this game originates from Yasuke. After that, people seemed (in my opinion) to look for excuses to legitimise their knee-jerk reaction to seeing Yasuke. There was genuine criticism of the kanji and the architecture, but that isn't what most of the discourse is based on. I do think those things should be fixed. No game or person has ever really been cancelled. A game made by hundreds of people isn't going to be scrapped regardless of its problems. An extremely rich comedian isn't going to go bankrupt because people call out the bigotry of their comments. Cancel Culture is a narrative pushed by right-wing online figures because of left-wing people who have problems with games. I personally didn't see a single person saying to scrap Stellar Blade entirely, I did see lots of people complaining about the oversexualisation and objectification of women and saying they wouldn't buy the game. Admittedly, I don't use Twitter much so other people may have examples I haven't seen and I am open to reception on that. The "voting with your wallet" take is a common one I disagree with. Obviously I won't buy anything I have a problem with, save for fringe cases, but I think making a statement to spread the information and reasons why you shouldn't buy a game is valid. Regarding Hogwart's Legacy, a lot of people were completely unaware of Rowling's bigoted comments and didn't want to buy the game afterwards. I think big movements that shine a light on something a creator has done are positive, because it means someone can make a more informed decision with their money instead of unknowingly supporting someone they don't know they wouldn't support if they understood the full picture. However, everything attached to an IP makes money regardless. Despite my politics, I did actually buy Hogwart's Legacy. I didn't know about her comments at the time, and I regret the purchase I can't take back now that I understand. Finally, as someone obviously engaged in politics, I think political content is much more difficult to make than people give credit for. It requires a lot of learning about really bad things and it gets an extremely high amount of vehement hatred compared to other types. Of course certain political channels on KZbin have boomed, but that's often not purely a product of politics, or its politics based on knee-jerk reactions (think like leafy clones). Extremely long post, but tldr; I'm a fan of your content and I acknowledged my biases above. But I do think some of your points in this video are worth criticising. I don't like the language Americans use to describe Japanese people, voting with your wallet isn't the sole solution, and I think cancel culture is extremely exaggerated online. 💜✌️

I'm going to listen to this entire video while I do some work, but I want to say that I found your last video to be a very well reasoned take. However, it was very conspicuously missing the viewpoint of a huge demographic that this affects. Asian Diaspora (e.g. asian americans) - specifically men. Our opportunity for an Asian Ezio has been completely erased, which stings because of the history western treatment of our demographic in media. I'm not going to go into a lengthy exposition here so I'll just summarize it in two bullet points: - Anti-Asian racism in media is gendered, so the lack of positive asian male portrayal is NOT fixed by Naoe existing, which the game's supporters continue to gaslight Asians with into thinking is okay. - There is no positive portrayal of asian men. I knew about this decision back even in November, but I kept an open mind, and Ubisoft's racism shines through more strongly with every trailer they release. Somehow asian diaspora voices have been drowned out by both conservatives screeching foul at every minority, lgbt, and woman in their games, down to the absurdity of thinking women in video games look too "manly". But at the same time progressives are equally as if not more guilty of drowning out asian voices by painting every critic as a racist, when from our point of view it is Ubisoft, and them by extension, being racist. I don't blame you for missing this huge viewpoint, because I believe discussion around this game on social media was engineered, and Ubisoft planned for asian voices to be drowned out. And what makes it worse is the blatant double standards - Genshin Impact, an even bigger franchise made by a Chinese studio, was recently accused of whitewashing a character inspired by a Nigerian god. Which they absolutely did. But the same people that are actively defending this game, are the ones calling RE5 racist, decrying the new black hawk down game for being colonialist, and accusing Genshin of culturally appropriating. And the industry backs them, while ignoring the anti-asian racism that I find to be not unlikely malicious by Ubisoft. That doesn't sit well with me.
@toa6954 ай бұрын
I feel like almost all of this is purely speculation that the creative decision to have a Japanese female is of malicious and/or racist intent, but I don't really see anything pointing to that being the case. Also, whilst Asian females do get a lot of representation in media, not all representation is good representation. They are almost always in very stereotypical, helpless immigrant or rebellious young girl rebelling against strict Asian family, or a generic love interest for a white saviour... this might actually be one of the better representations we ever get for a game protagonist.
@lowdefinition42504 ай бұрын
@@toa695 I finished the video actually, so great timing on the comment. 1) Yes, it's speculation that it's malicious, but given Ubisoft's history of explicitly saying "women don't sell games" back during their 2020 scandal, I'm almost certain that behind closd doors, they said something like "asian men don't sell games". And as a former longtime AC fan, I can tell you there's only ONE piece of media in all of AC that has a full east asian male protagonist, and it's a niche mahnua called AC dynasty written by a chinese manhua artist. 2) I never said asian women get better representation - I said they get oppositely racist representation which means the solution involves representing both asian women and men positively. If Ubisoft is the type of company to go "representation matters", they can't give half the entire asian demographic a massive middle finger. I'd literally rather them just come out and say "yeah the reason why we decicded to go with a black guy instead of an asian guy is because asian guys don't sell. get bent". At least they'd be honest. I'll take blatant in your face conservative racism every day of the week insidious stab-you-in-the-back progressive racism. See point 1)^

@@lowdefinition4250 I feel like this attitude is doing a complete disservice to the legitimacy of Yasuke as a protagonist. I don't get why the only conceivable possibility people can think of is that he was only picked because Asian men don't sell, or for political reasons. Yasuke as a character is actually quite interesting and pretty much ideal as an AC protagonist, especially for the story they appear to be telling, the Jesuit are going to be templars, I'm 99% sure. Someone with direct ties to the "templars" as well as direct ties to Nobunaga, who also fits the classic and successful trope of "stranger in a strange place" that people seem to love when telling a story of Japan, see Shogun for example which was critically acclaimed and is getting nominated for Emmys. I don't know, it just seems strange that when a black character is involved, suddenly the only possible thing that matters about him is that he is black. Very strange indeed.
@lowdefinition42504 ай бұрын
@@toa695 I'm NGL to you, this is shaping up to be a bad faith discussion. The reason doesn't matter - I already told you in both comments that it's an educated guess, and I'll reiterate it here. It's an educated guess. The real problem is the effect of this decision, which is that we as Asian diaspora feel erased, invalidated, and excluded from the representation discussion. They say representation matters and then pull this stunt. It's inconsistent as hell. If you didn't see people complaining about the last samurai, shogun, marco polo, tokyo vice, or any of the countless western shows set in asia that came up with an excuse to shove in a white main character, then you haven't been listening. It's not just "suddenly because it's Yasuke". No, you just haven't been listening. Again, this is progressive hypocrisy at work - progressives are trash allies to asians, and I would even go so far to say that they're enemies. And you're STILL not listening. The very first comment I complained about this being an important matter for Asian diaspora and you've been doing your best to delegitimize my voice. This is a prime example of how people are using talking points to drown out asian voices. Edit: I am criticizing Ubisoft, why would I be concerned that what I'm saying does a disservice to Yasuke as a protagonist? Even if it were, I wouldn't care.

The only thing I don't agree with is the female being the main character. Now if they did something where like how Eivor name was unisex I would be okay with that. Me personally I don't relate to female leads. I prefer this choice system that they've implemented in the last few games. Anytime I've ever played a game with a female I just don't relate or feel like the story matters as much. That's just as a male perspective I guess. So if you got a choice to play as amount or a female in AC going forward that to me is the right choice at least but they should keep it to fictional characters only.

I truly wonder how these people would react if, say for example, AC3 came out today. I just finished replaying it and I have a strong feeling the way it criticizes how much the Revolution and its founding fathers are romanticized, calling into question the continued slavery and mistreatment of indigenous people, would ruffle a lot of feathers. More, in fact, than whatever Shadows could ever dream of doing. The ending of that game says it all - while the patriots are celebrating Connor looks to the side and sees a stand with slaves ready for auction only to go to his village, shortly thereafter, to find his people were all driven out and their lands sold ("taxation would have been too British, too soon"). Or Shaun's emails and speeches about how homophobic and racist they all were. Being realistic, Ubisoft would be too cowardly to ever release a game like that, in spite all its flaws, nowadays. Once people realize that this would be the scenario today, and the fact they didn't care back then, it becomes too apparent that none of this outrage actually matters. It never did.

As long as games in general don't turn into a propagandist shitshow for either side, I'm alright. I'm not saying Shadows is at the level of what I describe but I still think it should be allowed to exist, and players should decide whether they want to buy the game or not. It peeves me how Ubisoft handled the historicity of the game marketing-wise, and I think that's probably what most people have an issue with, that have an issue with it to begin with. Like imagine ur a black kid excited for this game and you see people hating it cuz the main character has the same skin color as you. It would be very hurtful. I mean if they made an AC game in india without a main indian playable character i would be hurt as well. but i mean like its a game, its not that deep, just enjoy it, we're all here to have a good time and play games. YU HIRAYAMA Japanese Historian *"It seems like there's a lot of talk about Yasuke, a black man who served Oda Nobunaga. There are very few historical documents about him, but there's no doubt that he was a "samurai" who served Nobunaga. Regardless of one's social status, if one's master promoted one to the rank of "samurai," one could become one in medieval (warring states) society. I can say this because the historical documents state that ① Nobunaga gave him a "stipend," ② he was given a house, and ③ he was given a sword. Being given a "stipend" and serving Nobunaga closely fulfills the important requirements of a "contract between master and servant" and "agreement to receive a stipend." It is also important that he was allowed to carry a sword, so he was a two-sworded servant and not a servant (servants were not allowed to carry swords). And if he was given a house, there's no room for doubt. He was probably a slave until Nobunaga took over the missionary slave, but due to the above ① to ③ , he probably became a "samurai" of his own volition. During the Honnoji Incident, Akechi's side did not kill Yasuke because he was an "animal" or "not Japanese", but that was only because Akechi did not recognize Yasuke as a "samurai" (probably because he had discriminatory feelings). At that time, it was common for a master to promote someone of low status to a "samurai". To begin with, there is a good example in Hideyoshi. I try not to answer individual questions, but this is an important one so I will answer it. Even among "samurai", there are some who do not have a surname. In most cases, they are given a surname by their lord (in documents it is written as "receiving a surname"). There is no evidence that Yasuke was given a surname, but it is highly likely that it was planned to give him one in the future. Or maybe he had already been given one, but this cannot be confirmed in historical documents. Since he served Nobunaga for only a little over a year, it may have been a while since he was given a surname (the establishment of a family name)."*
