He also was already a trained warrior, having undergone bodyguard training in India. The most important detail proving he wasn't a samurai is that he was only given a Koshigatana (essentially the precursor to the wakizashi). Which he would have been able to use quite easily considering the slave soldier training in India used rather similar blades as backups for spears. Servants were not allowed to carry weapons, but samurai would carry it as a mere backup. Therefore, the only logical conclusion is that Yasuke was a retainer, a Servant so trusted they were armed and trained as bodyguards.

Two ideas that could have worked. 1. Yasuke is a Assassin undercover as a Catholic missionary sent to investigate the Templar presence in Japan and set up an Assassin base, recruiting Naoe as the Master Assassin. 2. Yasuke is a "mysterious figure" who recently arrived in Japan. For unknown reasons he understands Japanese and works with Nobunaga. It is later revealed that he is a nomadic Assassin sent to investigate the Nobunaga family specifically.

Even after apologizing, they continue to insist that it is a perfect historical reenactment. In Japan, this statement is seen as an attempt to denigrate Japanese history by passing off false depictions as fact. Ubi is only adding fuel to the fire. Many Japanese believe that Yasuke will be forgiven if they make it clear that it is a fantasy work that has nothing to do with real Japan. But it's too late now.

I am gonna be the devils advocate for a bit , but hear me out. I am gonna say that Yasuke’s story is fresh and different. Samurais like Musashi and Toyotomi, while immensely important and marketable, have already been featured extensively in Japanese and global media for decades. Yasuke, on the other hand, offers a new perspective and narrative that stands out among more familiar samurai stories. Yasuke’s story is relatively under-documented, which gives creators a lot of narrative freedom. Unlike Musashi or Toyotomi, whose lives are well-documented and heavily mythologized, Yasuke’s life is more of a blank canvas. This allows Ubisoft to fill in gaps with creative liberties, expanding his role beyond what history has documented. HOWEVER If the creators take too many liberties with Yasuke’s integration into samurai culture without addressing the real cultural and racial tensions of that era, it risks creating a narrative that doesn’t respect the actual challenges Yasuke likely faced. The tension between Yasuke’s outsider status and the firm , secluded nature of Japanese society should be central to his story. 3:50 To back up your point here. I agree. As a very long time fan of AC, I was tempted to buy the game anyway and just play as Naoe. But Ubisoft kind of suggested that there would be sections of the game that we are forced to play as Yasuke. That is a dealbreaker for me. If they made him an NPC and removed him as playable, I'd buy the game.

Kunoichis did exist. Naoe isn't the problem (although her design shouldn't be so androgynous). It's Yasuke and Ubisoft's lack of knowledge on Japanese culture, making silly mistakes.

Either give us 1 male hero like older AC games or if they want a ninja and a samurai then give us 2 traditional asian male characters.

Not as strong in fights, more about subterfuge and all. Could be a nice change of pace, exploring new gameplay concepts and all. They don't actually need to erase Yasuke, they could just change the story so that some random Black American Weeb time travelled back in time to ancient Japan to become a samurai, and just need to add "This game is purely fictional" to the starting loading screens

I don't think it's possible to remove Yasuke at this point. They're releasing in February (probably). There is not enough time to make all the necessary changes, not to mention they would have to scrap half of the game. There are no good choices for Ubisoft to make at this point. Might as well just release and hope for the least bad outcome, which is still pretty bad all things considered. After 2024-25, we might start to see a lot of changes taking place in Ubi.

All they had to do was make the samurai Japanese. Why did they have to screw it up? I have been waiting for Assassin's Creed Feudal Japan since the first game. Now I'm not even going to buy it out of principle. Such a waste of potential. Normal people don't like DEI stuff. Any company with any DEI staff is wasting money on counter-productive personnel. What ever happened to good old common sense?

If they fully replaced the main male character for an authentic and legit Japanese man, a true Samurai then they will have a sales increase, however they have Yasuke too deeply ingrained in the game for cutscenes, and all over the cover/promos.

Pretty much the only way Shadows won't end up being a flop and screwing over Ubisoft even more is if they delay and rework the game, which specifically means replacing the black guy with an actual Japanese dude. They need to stop with the woke pandering bullshit and fake history. It's crazy how these companies still think this is the strategy to go with when it's been proven time and time again that it backfires.
