Carpenter in his prime was an absolute genius . Napoleon Wilson ranks alongside Snake Plissken as my two favourite anti heroes in film . It’s got a couple of problems but still one of my favourite of classic Carpenter .

Growing up and living in East Los Angeles, I have no idea where John Carpenter got the idea for a "cholo" being some blood ritual or whatever that was. A "cholo" in the hood is just slang for a gang member. Every time I watch those scenes I laugh hysterically but like you guys stated, this movie is a classic. It's a shame the two stars Darwin Joston and Laurie Zimmer didn't do anymore leading roles after this film. They were both amazing but will never be forgotten because of this movie. Great review guys.

In some parts of Mexico cholo, apart from being slang for gang member or thug, it's a style of clothing

Like 80% of all John Carpenter's work it ages well as it was written well it was shot well, and it has great tone. This is in my top 5 to 7 he ever did and the wife and I and some friends watch it 2 or 3 times a year. Loved Fishburne in the remake but the original is still key. I relish you young men bringing the classics to the NEW (read very young 16 to 25) audience coming up so they can find these classics and HOPEFULLY fall in love with them or these will all be forgotten.

Thank you for pointing out Laurie Zimmer's performance. I have pointed out to my son that Leigh is a depiction of the perfect woman. I saw this movie shortly after it came out, and was just blown away. Even as a kid I knew Leigh was something special, but the overall message of few standing against many stayed with me as well. And Rio Bravo has a stunning Angie Dickinson.

Great review fellas, revisiting his movies, starting with Assault, usually start with my favourite Halloween, he has a knack of making you feel the underlying undertones of his film's, The Thing "paranoia" The Fog "foreboding" and so on... Masterful directing on every level, on hardly any budget, all of his film's are classics.

As you played that...snake like music, it by itself is VERY effective already, & suits the film so well, on the rare occasions a Director is able to write his own soundtrack music he KNOWS what he wants & suites the story best as is the case here. ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 was an almost unique film, something very different believable, with great suspence and action, very well made on a low budget, it's difficult to tell a violent dark story without it being depressing or in bad taste but Carpenter manages to do that here, and the characters have great charisma to.

I know too much about how loud silencers are to accept the idea no one heard the gunfire (they also wouldn't work on revolvers). The hero even has a line about how there was only the sound of glass breaking. A silenced .223/5.56 is louder than a jackhammer. Edit: Plenty of movies are unrealistic with silencers, this one just bugs me because of how wrong it is.

For a director most known by horror movies carpenter have aproach many generes and even in his early films you see he have a vision and a good history to tell, from this movie until his latest movies is noticeable he want to be grounded, the script amd cinematography have something to say and directly or subjectively is making a comentary on society, this one been very diferent to his next movies still have a compelling setting and characters and is as memorable as any carpenter film and show that at that early he was a good composer and filmmaker

Damn, it has been way too long since I've seen this classic. Your write up was perfect, great work guys. Maybe I was wrong about Napoleon. I always thought he was a classic Carpenter antihero but the actor for me didn't compel me at the time, can't wait to rewatch and see how I feel about it. Last thing, this movie is made by the nihilistic synth music, just the stuff of legend. Carpenter is one of the greatest auteurs imo, movies aren't like this anymore.

God, this is such a good film. Carpenter is my all-time favourite filmmaker and this just an absolute masterclass in tension. With regards the remake, I actually really like it. I think it does plenty to justify its existence. And given how much of a fan of Carpenter I am, I was utterly relieved at how much I enjoyed the 2005 iteration.

It’s still quite shocking in all honesty, the moment just happens, and the story progresses, there’s no fanfare just one suppressed gunshot. With that being said (and I know she’s a little girl, so we’ll cut her some slack) her acting is as horrific as the scene itself. “I wanted Vanilla Twist.” in one of the most monotone voices I’ve ever heard, and that’s coming from someone who sounds completely flat in their pronunciation in almost every conversation.

Even before I watch this. One of my favorites, of Carpenter movies. Love it! P. S. And the tune got a "second life" (not that it needs it, as of my opinion, but as a child of that time...) by Bomb The Bass and was featured in Xenon 2: Megablast... Didn't really like the game, but tune was (is) still great and gripping!

Amazed that they had the balls to kill a kid. They acknowledged racial issues, but didn't make them important. At one moment they said "no one hear because of the silencers", then they used unsilenced guns, which I thought was a plot hole, but then they address it and make the idea central to the tension. Great movie, apart from some of the action scenes looking a little bit stiff.

Caught this on HBO way back when cable had just become a thing. This was the film that brought John Carpenter onto my radar, where he's remained ever since. I probably started watching partly out of boredom, and the fact that movies without interruption all day long with no rating restrictions to a kid was a novel thing, but when he shoots that girl 16 y/o me was like, "never seen anything like that before". That scene would still be shocking today if not moreso to this current easily triggered audience. The film never slowed down after that, and kept me engaged the entire length of the film.
