A string of high-profile mass shootings over the past few years has spawned a movement to outlaw so-called assault weapons, in particular the popular AR-15.
On January 9, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) introduced a federal bill to ban assault weapons-legislation that's been depicted as life-saving, common sense policy. But its definition of an assault weapon is totally arbitrary.
Proposals like Feinstein's latest draft bill leave shooters with plenty of equally deadly alternatives.
"An assault weapon is whatever is covered by an assault weapon ban," says Reason Senior Editor Jacob Sullum, author of a feature story on the topic in our June 2018 issue. "The criteria that are used to identify assault weapons are things that have little or nothing to do with how useful or how deadly an assault weapon is in the hands of a mass murderer."
The federal government banned assault weapons in 1994, when President Bill Clinton signed a bill also sponsored by Sen. Feinstein. That legislation expired 10 years later. Meanwhile, seven states and the District of Columbia have enacted their own assault weapon bans.
There's little evidence that the 1994 legislation reduced gun deaths, in part because it was mostly a symbolic gesture.
"Unless you really delve into the specifics of what these bills do, you don't understand how utterly arbitrary they are," says Sullum.

Fully semi-automatic is semi-automatic all the time. Semi semi-automatic is semi-automatic some times, and sometimes not It all depends of the reliability of your action. I have this old Raven .25 cal. Sometimes it's semi-auto and other times I have to manually operate the bolt to get a new round in the chamber. So I guess that gun is semi-semi-auto.

@TME3 if you want to be taken seriously, get your facts right. 40,000 deaths a year (6/10 are suicide according to pewresearch.org), not 60,000, and to kill 100 in 2 minutes is pretty impossible (Las Vegas shooting- 59 dead in about 10 minutes). And I agree, there are idiots who dont care, and others wh are ignoring it, but a good 90% of us do care. We dont live in areas of cities like L.A., Chicago, and NY, and have dysfunctional households. What I'd like to see is a basic gun safety questionnaire and a suicide prevention pop-up sort of thing when purchasing a firearm from licensed dealers, and more support to crime ridden areas. That's where the violence is. Deal with criminals, not the hundreds of millions of law abiding citizens like you and me. This wont fix all the problems, maybe not even 30%, but it is a better way of going about it than grouping more people into criminals because now they own an unregistered, or banned firearm. Also, banning types of guns or all guns, or guns from certain areas obviously don't help anyone (i.e. sandy hook, Las vegas, Columbine, Virginia tech).

Great point! The Army's M-4 rifle, is, however an assault rifle, as it can be selective to fire in automatic mode! However, in reality, this very seldom happens, as it is very wasteful of ammunition, and ammunition is HEAVY to carry. A soldier typically carries 7 x 30 round mags = 210 rounds. Fired in full auto he/she would expend ALL his/her ammo in a few minutes, and basically be defenceless until resupplied with ammo! But, technically, it defines the M-4 as an assault rifle, unlike the AR-15 which does not have this function. If used by the military, the AR-15 could possibly be classified as an infantry rifle.

The amount of time that it would take a shooter to change limited capacity mags wouldn't make a much of difference. Much like guns, the technology developed from competing against one another finds practical uses in the civilian markets. Robert Gregg thank you for pointing out the truth that everyone who does their research will find as well. All of what you’ve said is correct and we MUST defend our country and our founding principles.
