A little heads up for people who are interested in this kit and want to stain it. Like all kits these come with a sealer already applied. You need to sand it off. Because of the carved top, the sealer can penetrate a little deeper where the carve starts. This prevents your stain from penetrating, leaving you with a lighter edge. Pay extra attention when sanding!

This is a great point, thank you. The guitar I got actually had a pore filler and base coat applied but it definitely needed more work if I had stained it. I painted with solid colors, so it was a bit easier. More on this in the next episode.

Pro tip to test the electronics before installing the strings, hover your phone just above the pickup you're testing and you can hear what your phone is playing through the amp. Got the idea from the samurai guitarist and used it to test the electronics on my strat style kit. Works like a dream.
@CatPickStudios2 жыл бұрын
Haha that's a fun way to test the pickups for sure!

A friend of mine ordered that kit and got 2 sets of pickups 🤘🏽one set with chrome covers one set of black. It was probably a mistake but the kit looks cool. Love your design plan Vlad Halen 🤘🏽

This is gonna be a cool guitar! Wonder how many purists are getting ready to be upset about Van Halen style on a PRS type guitar. 😍

Honest opinion of the KIT quality. How does the woods feel, how is the neck, electronic quality and quality over all. I've been looking for some DIY guitar KIT for a while now. These one in Thomann looks quite good and are also quite cheap ones to start with.
@CatPickStudios2 жыл бұрын
Great question! This is my second HB DIY kit and both of them have been really nice. Both have had fairly thin necks and flat fingerboards but I'm guessing it's something an average guitarist wants. The best thing about these kits is that when you put them together, the instrument feels solid and nice to play. Feels like a 'real' guitar. The hardware seems very decent to me and at least with the Tele the only thing I wanted to swap was the pickups as they we're pretty thick and dark sounding. Both guitars needed a bit of maintenance on the frets, both rounding up the fret ends and also polishing them. Overall I think it's a great deal for the money. Put the kit together and you have a playable guitar that feels and sounds good. They are also great for practicing all kinds of painting and finishing options and the parts are pretty well sanded and have a bit of primer lacquer applied to them. Compared to building a guitar from scratch, this is sooooo much more approachable.

@@CatPickStudios Thanks for the reply. Maybe I should order an LP-model kit and build that one. Not sure what I'm looking for from these kits. Maybe to lower the step to maintain my main guitars or something like that.

I’m maybe gonna get this kit, so I was wondering, if I want to paint the body should I do it before or after «building » everything ?? I’m sure it’s basic knowledge but I’m still asking just to be sure
@CatPickStudios2 ай бұрын
I think it's smart to ask before doing stuff, something I should remember more often... ;D I did painting first because it is easier tofocus on the details when the guitar is in pieces. The benefit of bolt-on design is that you can for example paint the body separately before attaching a neck to it. If you check the full video series, I actually take the guitar into pieces several times during the process before finally putting it all together.

@@CatPickStudios thank you!! I’m gonna negotiate with my mother to get this kit (hoping I’ll be able to build it lol) and if I can get it I’m definitely gonna paint before and then build !! Thanks!!

If I got this kit would it be able to fill the screw holes and just tight bond the neck in to make it a set neck?
@CatPickStudios2 жыл бұрын
Technically yes, but I'm not sure how good that neck joint would look with you having to fill the holes on the neck. Also you wouldn't really get that much better upper fret access that way.

Nice video and a great job! What is the weight of the guitar? I am considering buying such a kit, but I don't want to have a guitar that is too heavy.
@CatPickStudios2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! With budget friendly guitars like this one the weight can vary a lot but at least mine is pretty light. The T-style kit I assembled several years ago was heavier than an average electric guitar. I guess it's a bit of a gamble which one you'll get.
