How to assemble a Briggs and Stratton Engine. Engine is a Model #12H802-1534

Most of the Briggs & Stratton Engines used no gasket sealer on the sump gasket because the thickness of the gasket is how the Crankshaft end play is set. When you look up parts and find that there is 2 or 3 different thickness of gaskets just measure the thickness of a piece of your old one.

I see your point, but if you don't want the gasket to stick don't use gasket sealer at all. I used gasket sealer here because the factory used it and because this is a "permanent" part being clamped down as opposed to say a valve cover which I may need to remove more often.

they put sealant on just on side so if and when they take it apart again the gasket will stay stuck to one side and less chance of it being torn

At time point 8:37 you say , " the valves will be in the open position, because the cam lobes are facing away from the lifters." Aren't the valves in the closed position?

If (for example) the valve clearances were too large, how do you adjust them?

Took my briggs apart having no clue what I was doing. The governor dropped out while I was draining leftover oil, not realizing nothing really held it in. I’ve been perplexed in firmly believing that the governor paddle somehow attached to the end of the governor. You saved my mind. Now I’m going to watch the whole series.

hello, which way to set the piston in briggs&stratton 13.5 HP 2008 model 21b807-0667-b1. I don't know if the arrow on the piston is supposed to look at the flywheel or down?

Basically, if the valve clearance between the pushrods and the valves are too great you will have to weld material on to the valve stems and turn them in a lathe or buy or make new valves. If the clearance is too little you will have to grind the valve stems little by little until you arrive at the required clearance.

VHT COPPER GASKET CEMENT hang the gasket on a wire hook and spray both sides let it get tacky about 5 minutes gives a perfect seal.

Bruce Wilmot had a similar question 3 yrs ago, but what are the torque values for the crank case and cylinder head bolts?

Once I tighten down the connecting rod bolts to 100 in lbs I can no longer spin the engine by hand. I have to attach the lawn mower blade to the end to be able to force it. Is this normal? Engine is off a Craftsman self propelled mower and the only part I replaced is the connecting rod. Once I loosen the bolts it turns freely. I’m afraid I may have bent the rod when the connecting rod failed (due to lack of oil...oops).

Black silicone is not a hard sticking sealer like B&S uses. The heat of that type of engine will often make the gasket stick like hell. That black silicone will make the gasket much easier to remove next time as well as help seal.

You shouldn't be measuring the valve clearances without the crankcase cover on and the other cam bearing fully supported. Since valve clearances always seem to tighten up and never loosen on these engines, I'm always inclined to set the valves up a thousandth or two "loose" during an overhaul. They always seem to run better with loose valve clearances rather than tighter clearances anyhow. Great video, though.

Hey Alchemist Lair, could help me? I followed yours seven videos for rebuilding my lawn mower engine Briggs. i needed to replace cylinder assembly and head cylinder for new parts, but after the work my engine didint work more. i adjusted correctly timing gear with camshaft in the mark, i adjusted the two valves for 0.15 mm intake and 0.25 mm for exhaust (Because tools in Brazil they are in milimeters in interval de 0.05 mm between they, and i converted closer possible 0.07 inches and 0.09 inches, exactly how you say in video), the flywheel and spark plug is aparently ok, even because there is no mistake in rebuilding this. is there test this? i only tested pulling the spark plug and the spark is right. I relly need help... my lawn mower model is 10T502-3263-H

Is it really a good idea to measure the valve clearance when the camshaft is only supported at one end? The clearance will certainly read higher than it really is and the exhaust valve will have the biggest error.

It would be better to have the cam supported on both ends although the boss for the cam was deep and tight enough that I felt it was supported well. I checked these clearances after assembly and they were still the same. Thanks for commenting!!

Maria Engström Yes it is!! As I mentioned these are preliminary checks that you should do "before" you put the case halves together. If the valves are severely worn or you grind the valves seat, you need to have some idea of what your valve clearances are before you assemble the halves. YOU WILL ALWAYS CHECK AFTER YOU ASSEMBLE THE TWO, but your valves will usually then fall in spec.

The sealer on the gasket on one side is sopposably to hold it in place without it moving around plus lets say for some reason the. Shell him de 6rwarp almost nothing then thag little. Sealer does the job. Because it pushes the gasket or sealer to fill in that warp using gasket and u don't have to worries that u put both sides sealer they say don't use it.l Because particles of it cud dry in the inside then their is a possibility to have dried pieces of gasket inside the engine. Idk how common or often that happens but their is a possibility of that happening.

gasket sealant on one side is to enable saving gasket when disassembling--the idea being that when parts are separated gasket remains stuck to one part not both
