Dave it sounds like you need to add a low oil level sensor to the oil pan to warn those drivers that don't check the car out properly before driving it. Also a low oil pressure ignition cutoff switch to prevent all the bearing & valve damage when the pump was cavitating from low levels or windage problems.

Would have been a great time to talk about valve seats and valve grinding. I assume the seats are 3 angle and placed properly. A quick lap with some compound would have been a great illustration for a basic and important part of head building. P.s. I’ve noticed you have skipped quite a few steps that many people do in different ways. I understand attempting to keep the argumentative comments down but this has been a great series of videos and now it’s missing some basics. Some people are gonna bicker no matter how generic you try to make it. For myself, I know there is more than one way to do a good job on a lot of this stuff and I enjoy seeing new ideas.

Would like to hear more detail in the explanation of the build. Talked about clearance. How and what do you measure to determine if your in tolerance. If your out of tolerance, what is the remedy.
@markg70305 жыл бұрын
He showed how it's done when he smashed the clay then measured it. If the clearance was not enough he would install a thicker head gasket. He also mentioned other options if the new valve seats were not the same installed height as the old ones.
@GlassTopRX75 жыл бұрын
There are loads of videos that show that. If you compare some of the types of builds like stock vs a race build you see how easy it is to turn the crank by hand vs more typical build.

Cool they did address the cam. Stock that engine mystifies me as it really performed no better than the 4bbl 350. For that matter the 350 was just as quick as the Z\28 high strung 302 when not order with high gearing. To me a modern cam that delivers similar idle quality to stock was the right move here, it's fairly cheap, can easily be reverted back to stock, and delivers L78 like power, likely with a bit more low end torque with those heads. While visually looking stock.

I think it's interesting that the historic problem with the BBC is being covered here; the lack of adequate valvetrain stability for a larger cam, largely due to valve springs that came from the factory with something like .398" max lift height. Pretty sad. Surely, nothing bad can be said about the rest of the engine. Even the oval port heads are quite good, and the canted valves of the BBC, as well as other era-spec designs, is a proven method for increasing flow. Really can't wait to hear this engine fire up!

You went from a .040 to a .080 thou head gasket. Did you compensate for the intake manifold to cylinder head alignment? Or was it because the head and block surfaces were cut down? Just curious cause I’ve seen engines with internal oil seepage through intake gasket when this is done.

Did it take 5 hours for the short block trash bag reveal today? Lol! Do you suffer for others art? Lol! It's so pretty! Love that new block break in smell , ahhhhh. Its funny how different engines from the factory coming off the same assembly line can turn out so different from each other.1 can be a screamer yet the next one can be a dog. Rug it! Oh,yeah,and check the freakin fluids huh? Especially with a nice old beast like that,sheesh,lol! So 425 horse you say? How much did GM sandbag the horse numbers in the first place back in the day anyway? What, it's over already? Too short, we long videos,just like the women like lots of foreplay! The stock L35 325hp 396 was not underrated if anything it was over rated, in stock form arguable worse than the 4bbl 350. Even the L34 350hp 396 is pretty underwhelming in stock form when compared the L78 which was underrated after 65' making a legit 425hp. In fact the reason the L78 375hp engine was an unlisted option in 70' was because it's performed significantly better than the LS5 454 That is why many if not most people have little respect for the 396, originally most were the 325hp version and they dogs.

Dummy assembly should be done before the engine is final assembled. Checking every thing. Piston to valve, ring gaps, crank oil gaps, cam timing. Then everything properly cleaned and lubed and assembled The hammered valve was NOT low oil pressure but either a hammed rocker reassembled or maybe the oil hole in the pushrod/ rocker burred over. All of these old engines need to have the rockers replaced. Replacement tin rockers are cheap as are many roller rockers as well. Those 080 head gaskets? Remember the originals were 020 steel shim so it will be a dog with no comp. Worse those lumpys putting the fire out on probably less than 9-1. Use shim head gaskets with flat tops,, you will have far more comp and power.

does't .080 gasket kill quench?
@n8rivera745 жыл бұрын
I think he mentioned in a previous episode that with the pop-up pistons he's running, compression is a bit over the 10:1 he wants to build to. I bet the 0.080 gaskets help him bring the compression to where he wants it.
@roknroy15 жыл бұрын
@@n8rivera74 yes, but thicker head gaskets bring the piston further from the combustion chamber reducing efficiency, but he is right it is a cheaper way to lower compression

@Airwolf19715 жыл бұрын
Yeah that Camaro when he is finished wouldn't beat any stock Tesla. So what? This Camaro is NOT destroying the planet. LOL Where you people get these crazy ideas at? This car will be used for pleasure on nice days maybe a few weeks a year at most. This Camaro is not going to be a daily driver racking up 18,000 to 22,000 miles a year. The Tesla you love so much will put out far more pollution over it's life time of use than this Camaro will, after this rebuild is done, until the end of time.
