A pi zero and a lcd mod actual switches into the switch locations. You'd probably want to remove the screen plex cover so a touch screen could be installed else the functionality would be limited. Looking at the space behind the screen there is space for a lithium battery and charge curcuit. Depending how easy it is to upgrade the switches it may be possible to mod in a simple geiger counter like a c7601

Actually i looked into and there is a much smaller radiation sensor which you can use instead of a geiger counter (and is much cheaper), combine that with a raspberry pi, a screen, some buttons, dials, and a speaker, and you'd have a great portable pc.

Finding the right screen is going to be a task. LCD 4x3 displays certainly exist but not nearly as prevalent as their 16x9 brethren.

Hey norm, if you’re serious about doing the screen I can recommend the cheapo android tablets , that’s what I did when I did my fallout 4 pip boy edition conversion. They use standard 40 display ribbons so you can move the board to where every you want. And because it’s android you can customise the OS to change the screen aspect ratio and even run the fall out 4 pip boy app.

That’s cool! Yes I was thinking about that while watching the build, there looks like enough room to put a color lcd display and a Raspberry Pi and a rechargeable battery in that. You could even put an am/fm radio in that part that has the tuner dial. You could make that thing into a unique media player that can play videos on the display, with a broadcast radio receiver and even play mp3 files or give it full replica functionality!

I too can recommend the Fusion Flea. Mine came in the post around 12/9, and I've been smiling every time I walk by it. The chrome paint isn't 100% precise, but that makes it look handmade and to me, so much better for it.

Set the drill to setting 1. It will stop when there is an amount of opposing force. Setting 1 to 5 on my drill stops sooner than a human will.

Just finished putting this thing together. The instructions could use some improvements. Some parts were really difficult like the internal pieces for the little red buttons were a pain and the brackets that snap into the cuff to attach it to the unit are pretty fragile and break easily which rendered my middle one useless. I'm not sure how long that rubber band will last over time that makes the radio dial/pointer move. The tools are too small to get a good grip on as some screws fit rather tight so you'll need better screwdrivers. Some of the screw holes strip out too easily. The coiled wire on the bottom doesn't stay in so you'll have to glue it but be careful not to get it on the rubber band inside for the radio dial. I actually used the screen decal because it looks weird leaving the screen blank. It looks very nice but it's made of a vinyl material and you have to get all the air bubbles out which is tricky because the design on the decal is easily scratched off. Overall this is a really nice kit and it looks amazing when completed. It took me way longer than 2 1/2 hours to build though.

Some designers have put a lot of thought into making a REALLY nice replica, with an eye to leaving HUGE scope to make it 'functional' - there are certainly radio modules you can get that could fit in that 'block' with the tuner and everything, I have several of those analogue needle gauges for a geiger counter, pi and LCD, heck, I'd even be tempted to (carefully!) cut the front element off a dead oscilloscope CRT and fit an LCD behind it to give it a proper glassy lensing effect that would fit in that frame.

Put a screen in ofc. use the dials and buttons to switch back and forth and up and down in the Pi-boy OS. Make Pip-boy OS put on Rasberi PI thing that fits inside the housings. Make functional "tapes" with stuff on it. Music, story things & or inventory lists

The fallout 4 one didn't work either but it did have a slot for a phone and an app you could use. With it being an empty shell I think the modding community will come out with something good. I trust them with these kinds of things more.

I would be more than happy with a static-image with a simple green LED backlight. It could always stay on with almost no power, and would look great on a shelf full of collectibles. It would be pretty easy to make, just remove the opaque screen liner and replace with an etched piece of gray translucent plastic.

I thought it would come with a screen, I liked how the fallout 4 pip boy was functional with the app and on some phones could fill the whole screen of it with the pip boy app. Kind of bummed about that, won't be getting this.

Put a raspberry pi in the cassette, and have wiring from a lcd screen to the cassette reader, that meaning when you plug your "cassette" into the Pip Boy it will be able to be powered on and it will also power the lcd :D
