Awesome set of videos. I have been rebuilding my bus engine while following your videos very carefully. Now I am working on the steps provided in this video. I have never rebuilt a motor before, and this series of video's have been invaluable to me. Thank you so much for the time and effort which you have put into these videos. Hopefully when I finish going through your videos, I will have a working engine. I will say these videos make the task at hand less daunting for me a newbie.

How it went? Did you end up with a working engine?
@williamjahn75144 жыл бұрын
Wish I had the internet back in 1997 when I rebuilt my 72 Type 3. I like the way you fit the pistons with ring compressor on top rather than fit the pistons to the rods first and have the ring compressor between the case and cylinder. Also not using the paper cylinder to case gaskets and using silicone and the sealing of the 8 case half washers the 6 main ones and the two around the flywheel end of the cam.

We had a 1971 volkswagen which the engine was replace four times due to extremely high mileage. It came with a bathroom in it because the floor was rusted all the way through, a piece of plywood was put on the floor. On a rainy day you got your feet wet, but on a road trip you had a bathroom or trash can if you lifted up the floor. This is a miracle of engineering considering this was designed in the WWII era, in the Carter years and oil embargo this car served us well. Wonderful Jewish friends of mine drove Volkswagons in the 70's and 80's because they made economic sense at the time, not all of Germany was about evil or destruction.

Richard Allington VW factory was bombed during the war and a mess. Acc to my understanding after the war a Brit was assigned to get the factory repaired, and working, and turning out beetles. So post-war beetles were in some ways an Allied enterprise, British management, with German workers. No sense wasting a nice car design and a nice factory. Buying one after the war did not help the Nazis. Only thing was they should have built them for only 5 years. By 5 years of production they were Seriously outdated. Someone should then have completely redesigned the Folk's Car and put the new model in production by 1955. Instead they sold these things all over the world well into the 1970's. I don't think I ever saw an aircooled beetle that didn't need valves and rings after 80,000 miles. If you waited much longer after seeing the compression go down a bit in cyl #3 - and most people waited - cylinder #3 would suck in its exhaust valve - at about 90,000 miles. Then you would need new cylinders, pistons, at least one new connecting rod, and you would have to disassemble and reassemble the crankcase - if it survived. In other words most people didn't do the valve job and then needed a complete overhaul instead. You rarely if ever needed to overhaul the crankcase because you heard a knocking bearing; you needed to overhaul it because the piston sucked in a pulled-taffy valve that pulled in two.
@secondlooksformen38364 жыл бұрын
@@soilmanted I agree with your #3 analysis. But I'm So Glad VW continued to make the Bug in their old, outdated fashion. It's a chance to own and drive a piece of history. If it runs well for 80,000 miles, then you did ok, in my opinion. Simple and relatively affordable to repair. I love them in every way. I enjoyed reading your educated comments, sir! Thanks.

What about following the recommended order when torquing the nuts for the cylinder heads? What I seem to recall is the VW factory manual listed 2 sequences: tighten first to an intermediate torque that they specified, using the first sequence, then tighten to the final torque using the second sequence.

You don't mount the pistons onto the rods then slide the jug over them with the compressor on the rings then? I've always seen VW motors done like that, since it allows you to align the jugs properly then get them going straight down where you seat them properly. Seems like this way would be much harder.

Espero consigas los repuestos. Buen auto. PD. No lo miré completo por temor, aprender malas practicas.
