Let me start by saying this is a great video with tons of valuable information. You state that you shouldn't start with building a VW engine because there are so many tips and tricks you need to learn. If there are more than in this video, could you consider doing a video series building a motor and including all of the building tips and tricks? I don't see having built a small and big block Chevy as well as a small block Ford is going to help me with building the VW engine without these tips & tricks. Being ready for retirement and still loving my Volkswagon inspires me to dig down into the "meatier" caverns of the drive train (engine & trans) and your videos are giving me a little more confidence - THANKS! Last suggestion...write a book! A few million copies could provide you more $$$ for more great tools and parts or increase your shop size :-) Don't stop doing these as they are the best videos I've seen on KZbin!

Excellent and impressive knowledge you have there! You have become the master you learned from! Sorry about Dave, I know that can be rough but as you build you think of him from time to time and that's what is important. Very enlightening video and wish I had one to ask you to rebuild! Knew I guy like you back in the 60's that built engines for dune buggies but you surpassed his knowledge by leaps and bounds!

when i was a millwright apprentice i learned to use and read precision measuring tools , very much helpful on motors. but surprisingly a very good friend of mine who was a ford tech built motors using plastigauge so i thought him how to do it with mics and all he love it. your right darin about building american engines is not the same as vw, thats why i am watching to learn the vw way. i built enough 350 and 440 big block power .even marine blocks are great. i adopted this vw hobby about six years now , and i only run stock motor i learned and broke enough shit for a life time @62 i wanna enjoy more then working on them LOL . I learn a lot from listening to your vids thank you for that i have chronic back pain so i must take it easy the vw is just right for my capacity , my 1600 runs great all stock for me and the wife to ride its my little new hobby. we learn every day so ill keep watching your teaching vids thanks in florida until the next one .

i have never heard that you need to clearance a cam for running larger stroke. in the process of clearancing out my case for my first build, gonna be a 2275ccm, and how much clearance from the rods to the case do you recommend? thinking about expansion from heat and also som movement due to slack? noticed the roof was getting real thin after i ground it for the rods. great video!

My motor was a1641 cc and it broke a valve so I decided to build another so I got a Mahle set 94 x 69 in Houston and went back to Mexico, where I got a good case, welded behind no. 3 piston and build a set of big heads to put 40 x 35.5 valves and then I ordered a 76 mm crank (oops) an Engle cam and lifters, using the old 40 weber pair set, I have a problem with the lenght of the cilinders 69 against 76 rods so i am going to make the apropiate rings to match. The question is what do you recomend me and advise me and about how many horses it will do, I want to use it for street every day use Thanks for your great videos.

First timer to your channel and I really enjoyed it. I just got my first VW Bug, it is a 71 super beetle and I'm really excited about it. I really like performance cars. What motor would you build with performance in mind but reliability top consideration. I don't know to much about VWs. Who builds a really good turn key motor that offers reliability first & performance second. What size of engine & what kind of horse power. I want the most power you can get with out sacrificing reliability.

If I just want to buy a stock motor already built, is there a company that you would recommend, for example GEX International? This motor would be for a daily driver, just a standard 1600cc dual port. My main concern is quality and reliability. Lastly, how many miles is a stock motor good for before it needs a rebuild, in your experience? Thank you.

I've found there are a lot of people who don't recommend the Auto Linea/CB ali supercases saying they're softer castings, so I'd be interested to know why, apart from being ready prepped, you think they're better? Darrin, is it true that stock aircooled crankshafts have a #3 piston advance to offset the tendency to overheat because of the oil cooler getting in the way of the air flow? If so, engines with the doghouse type oil cooler setup must have perfectly flat crank arrangement. Is there an easier way to find out which crankshaft is which without having to use tools to measure the #3 crank offset?

So after you polish your heads if one combustion chamber is more CC than the other do you just adjust with shims to get the same compression ratio on All 4 cylinders?
@SendIt2121
@SendIt2121 4 жыл бұрын
Well actually I guess that wouldn't work because if you had two different size combustion Chambers on the same head and you used shims then the head would set crooked

Dont take everything someone says online as gospel. This guys has alot of good tips, but a few are a little off. 1. You can absolutely run a cam with different lifters, I ONLY use scat lifters (just a person preference) and I only use engle cams. 2. If you have the original German stock head studs, USE THEM! The German head studs are of very high quality and with not stretch or break as easily as other brands, especially empi.

Darin I do t know how to contact you by phone. I designed and built a frame a p/u style and used i tea thick tubing and made it safe with plenty of bracing. Had tons of comments on it. Got laid off and had to sell my engine never got to hear it start up a shame list my ass. But I see some flaws I did assembling it compared to your info. I need a nice bubble case and I'm mo ey strapped so I'm doing it slowly but correct this time, want a full flow oil, something g around 2050. 94mm pistons, I'm afraid to throw my phone number up here and might put my email up here, hopefully most that. Jew these videos are VW nuts like me and are pretty honest. First how can I get ahold of you, you actually seem like your a straight shooter and I appreciate That. Not maki h me stump my toes to learn a lesson, saves me a lot of time and money over long run. I'll keep checking this. Idea a d hopefully you still go back and look at comments. I'm in Texas not sure where your at up north sounds like it I drove to PA turn around to buy some parts. So I'm not afraid to travel if necessary. Thanks for your time Steve Quate North Texas

Can I recommend something. If your 65 VW has not been changed over to 12volt yet. Do that first. There are a few problems you are probably not aware of with the earlier bugs. Is your 65 six volt, 12 volt? If it has not been converted to 12 volt yet, I'd get that done first. The most difficult thing to do is honing out the transaxle enough to accept a 12 volt flywheel.
