The Smugglers Room

4 жыл бұрын

Today in the Smugglers Room we are adding shop organization combined with a great work surface to the Shop. But not only will this serve as a better place to organize material and tools, but it will add a bit of Sci-Fi magic as we will be giving this bench a Used Universe Look. This will be our Ultimate Sci Fi Assembly Table!

On that top row of drawers, here is a suggestion or two. There are drawer guides that have longer pull lengths, plus you can make the drawer fronts fold down on the top drawers so you could put in things like stencils and flat things that are long enough to go front to the back of the drawer allowing you to just have to see the front edge to pull out what you need.
@TheSmugglersRoom
@TheSmugglersRoom 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much. I’m definitely going to look at the longer drawer glides. We have shop towels in one with the extras stashed behind, but the stencils for the other are a great idea!

It's always nice to see a fun workbench made from scratch, but with the greeblies and extra details you added, this is way more interesting! That grey top really stands out and makes it feel not like a workbench and more like a display table. Overall, I'm very impressed with how clean your build is and it has given me some ideas about how to improve my tiny shop. :) I also appreciate your candidness and that you kept the bits in the video about how you had to redo the some things such as the spacing between the drawers. This is a really cool build and I got some great ideas off it. I do wish you had your camera back for a wider angle some of the time as it was a little hard to tell what you were doing. But I still loved this vid. Thanks guys!

A two-car garage is a massive amount of space, compared with the average one-car garage we have in the UK. 🤦 Blaster burns on the work surface would also look good. I was also wondering if you could get drawer openers where you press the draw and it pops open. That would make it more Star-Warsy (yes, "Star-Warsy" is A Thing!) 🤘

Yeah, i do honestly feel like I am very lucky with the space. Love the drawer idea! Thanks!

What a wonderful workbench. Looks like you really had fun building it. You’ve given me some great ideas for mine. I noticed at time frame 15:35 you used some metal blocks with holes in them for holding down parts for gluing. Can you tell me what those are called. May want to pick up some. Thanks again and I’ll be watching more of your videos. John

Hi John! So glad you enjoyed the build. It was certainly a labor of love, but we are absolutely enjoying it. The blocks you saw are 1-2-3 blocks. They are typically used by metal-smiths, but I saw Bill Doran from Punished Props using them, and we have found sooooooo many great uses for them. Here is a link (it is an affiliate link, but that will not cost you extra, it just helps our channel a bit.) amzn.to/3cEwR7L

A thought about the many items you'll create to Star Wars - The SR. Any and most decorative touches should have a secondary function of being able to store items whether they be props or supplies (glue, screws, tools or greeblies). This would go a long way towards declutering.
@TheSmugglersRoom
@TheSmugglersRoom 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Lowell, that is 100% the plan. We are going to have several more upgrades in the shop that will store items. Additionally in the basement project we are planning storage into many of those elements as well.

@@TheSmugglersRoom It wasn't that I didn't believe that you HADN'T thought of that concept of making your decorations and props have a secondary and more mundane use. My comment was to get the rest of fandom to also think along those lines. It's easy to get wrapped up in creating something that is visually appealing and end up with a space that becomes overflowing with items that take up that space. Also I would add i novel ways to secure them in keeping with the "Smugglers" theme that these would be good places to "Store" items wouldn't be apparent and catches would automatically be hidden as would the releases. This would automatically make each decoration or prop more interesting and valuable in any sense.

Love this build! What are the colors you used? I don’t have a laser cutter but will use your templates and my 3d printer to make something similar for molding.

Thank You! The gray color was mixed at Home Depot, Behr paint (Shadow Mountain Gray) and the red-ish color is simply Rustoleum Red Primer with a Satin Rustoleum finish.

Simply awesome! Talk about inspiration colliding with that very timely need for organization, this is perfect! I'm lucky I spotted that shiny metal object on the workroom floor the other day, because the digital caliper I spent 20 minutes looking for was laying right next to it. Oh, and great graphic (Sketchy Guy) and animation and background and design, pacing, etc, etc. BTW, are you going to have a rematch with your wife on... something/anything.... after your defeat with the laptop cases? Ugh. I can't bear to think about it anymore. ;) tough competition.

Hey there, thank you, glad you liked the build. We have a Ridgid 13 Amp 10" Cast Iron Table Saw, here is a link to it: thd.co/2ZbxJN6. We didn't do a video showing the add to the work area as it was basically just putting it up next to the table and leveling it off. Not a ton of integration . . . yet ;)
