I was an organ tech and tuner for many years. You've got quite a puzzle on your hands with a 3 rank mixture if its not fully documented. A mixture contains multiple ranks, usually 3 or 4, which are a harmonic chorus. For any given note in yhe keyboard 3 pipes sound, usually a fundamental pitch and harmonics (3rd above) and another unison an octave higher. There will also be "breaks" where the pitch drops back so the highest notes aren't impossibly small or high pitched. It's purpose is to add color to the overall diapason chorus, whete the open diapason forms the fundamental and octave (4') and mixture add the higher homonics for a richer overall tone. You can dm me here for more info.

The Mixture stop may well be a harmonic rather than the pure tone. The clue will be to look at the NUMBER beside the stop name (I trust it has one!) If it is 2, 4, 8, 16 then it is the pure tone. If it's something odd like 2 3/4, then its a harmonic, and will probably play the fifth (dominant), so pressing C will actually play a G, and so on up the scale. Hope that helps.

Not an organist or builder, but a church choir director, so I've been around them a lot. You are on the right track with the mixtures; they are multiple notes that play in harmony with the fundamental. If you play a C on the keyboard, you may actually hear a G (5 notes higher) or E (10 notes higher) or some other harmonic. Without any fundamental stops (16' or 8' or 4') they will sound like a train wreck, but when added to the ensemble - wow! They add a tremendous brilliance and volume to the complete organ sound. Sometimes they are called mutation stops. Sometimes they can make a pipe sound lower, called a resultant stop.
@raycox4139 Жыл бұрын
I don't know if they are available in Europe, but if you ever get the chance, play with an original Hammond drawbar organ. As you pull each drawbar slider out, it increases the volume of the different harmonics within each note. It was an attempt to electrically replicate the effects of the mixtures in pipe organs. You can instantly hear how harmonics work to change the sounds of each note and the overall sound of the organ ensemble.

on a pipe organ the register 'mixture' is a filler voice. they are actually the harmonics of the tonic (key you press). a 'mixture' can consist of 3, 4 or even 5 pipes. for example, in a 4' register a fifth (2 2/3) and an octave (2) and a third (1 3/5) form a 3-pipe 'mixture'. On an organ keyboard you have a bass side and a treble side. The register 'mixture' is actually always on the treble. I hope that the mixture (per key) has been packed. Otherwise it will be quite a challenge to place everything properly in the organ. Perhaps they are numbered or the name of the tonic is noted. I hope I wrote this in an understandable way. I am not English, but Dutch. If you need more clarity, you can always reply to this comment. good luck.

My suggestion is to lay the pipes out on the floor or wherever they fit and are out of the way. Lay them out from longest to highest by the note that is stamped or written on the pipe. The pipes that you think are playing in harmony with the root note are probably the mixture which in your case I think have 3 pipes per note. They alternate between the root note and fifth's and maybe thirds based upon when the organ was constructed then to make matters worse, the rank "breaks" back by swapping the root and the fifth/third backwards so that the pipes work with the rest of the ranks and contrapuntal music is clearly heard. They break back so that the pipes do not get too small and they support various octaves by supplying partials to the octave. I believe your Mixture starts at 2' pitch or 1-1/3' pitch so either c1 or g1(I couldn't really tell when you removed the organ from the Cathedral. These pipes should all be labeled similarly per note and there will be three or four pipes per note. Do not tune this rank until every pipe is in place. Then get three duck or goose feathers that are in great shape and have all of their ribs. Medium sized, smaller size and very small sized. You will silence the pipes by placing the feather in the languid of each group of pipes and you only tune one pipe at a time. This is maddening and very difficult to do this if you are not familiar with these pipes. Whatever the situation never force a pipe into what you think is the correct location on the windchest. The lowest pipe of the group gets tuned to another stop such as the Principal 4' of the same keyboard. (Once that is in perfect tune). Do not use an app to tune this because you will fail. It has to be done by ear only. The Mixture pipe will "beat" until it is in perfect tune with the Principal 4' (Which by the way is how the organ should be tuned - Everything is tuned to this one rank). Then pull out the feather of the languid of the second pipe in the group. Tune this with the Principal 4' and the Mixture stop drawn on the stop jamb. It will be a different pitch - more than likely a perfect fifth above the lowest note of the rank. Bring this into tune by eliminating the "beats" with the Lowest pipe of the Mixture and the Principal 4'. Then since you are beginning, silence the second pipe by placing the feather back into the languid. Then remove the feather from the third pipe's languid. This should be an octave above the lowest pipe tune this purely so there are no beats with the lowest pipe of the mixture and Principal 4'. Then remove the feather from the second pipe and it should sound perfect. It is a compound stop (more than one pipe per note) and it supports the lower pipes by sounding partials of each lower note. A real tone has many different pitches heard when used alone - say the Open Diapason 8'. You hear the fundamental note of 8' pitch. The next overtone heard is an octave above that so using only one pipe, you are actually hearing an 8' and 4' pitch simultaneously. Then it gets crazy because you also hear the twelfth or a 2 2/3' pitch with the same pipe or piano key just by playing one single note on the keyboard. This is called a "partial", which is an octave and a perfect fifth above that. The fourth partial is 2' or two octaves above the fundamental note. The fifth partial is 1 3/5' or the seventeenth (two octaves and a Major Third) above the fundamental pitch. The sixth partial is @ 1 1/3' or two octaves and a perfect fifth above the fundamental note. The eighth partial is @ 1' or three octaves above the fundamental. There are more partials and overtones for each note such as the flat seventh and ninth. An organ is basically an analogue synthesizer. Each Stop with it's unique shape and material strengthens or weakens each overtone and makes a unique sound. The only difference between a pipe organ and a digital synthesizer is the real mixing in real-time in the air the sounds. A digital instrument cannot do that - ever. In essence a Hammond Organ such as the B-3 uses drawbars to make the sounds. The drawbars ARE overtones and partials of the root note. Problem is that Hammonds are great for Jazz and other pop music but are horrible at contrapuntal music. If you are in doubt about this stop (the Mixture) get an organbuilder to help you sort it out. I know this is a lot of information but you should not have any difficulty with any other stop on your Convent Organ. The Mixture is the exception it is complex and requires someone who knows what they are doing 100% - it is probably the only thing that you will have an issue with.

The mixture is a mutation stop meaning its note does not correspond to the key on the keyboard. It instead plays a note at a tonal ratio above the fundamental pitch. It's meant to be played with other base stops to create harmonics and chords. Tierce stops or nasard stops are other examples of mutation stops.
@caseyflorida Жыл бұрын
Yes, but the mixture has more than one pipe on each note, so it plays 3 or 4 tonal ratios above the fundamental pitch.
Жыл бұрын
Yes, it would be more accurate to say it contains at least one mutation. Each key could have multiple corresponding pipes in the mixture, one or more of which is tuned to a harmonic of the base note.

A mixture is a set of pipes that sound various harmonic pitches related to the foundation stop(s): in your case the 8’ Open Diapason and 4’ Principal. There will be multiple pipes sounding for each note: this can vary: 3 rank-3 pipes, 4 rank-4 pipes and so on. The pitches are most likely to sound octaves or fifths above the fundamental. Certain types of mixtures can include a third sounding rank also (a Cornet or Sesquialtera) but if your stop is named Mixture this will be unlikely. The other aspect that will be confusing is that the mixture will break back periodically: possibly every octave or two. The lower notes on the keyboard will have higher pitches emphasized and at each “break” in the mixture the pitches will change to a different combination of lower pitches until the next break and another set of lower pitches and so on. Some of the pipes at the treble end of the keyboard may even double the foundation stop. The pipes may have this sort of appearance: lllllllliiiiiiii,,,,,,,lllllllliiiiiii,,,,,,,lllllllliiiiiii,,,,,, etc. (rough idea-ignore the dots on the i ). The purpose of a mixture is to even out the sound across the full compass of the keyboard. They also add strength and brightness to the ensemble without using a lot of wind, important in the days before electricity when organs were winded by human power. You might wish to get the assistance of an organ builder to sort out these pipes and to tune them: a unique process in itself. When you get everything installed, the customary way of tuning the organ is to set the temperament on the tuning stop - probably the 4’ Principal on the Great division - tune all the pipes of that rank. Then, one by one, the other ranks of pipes are tuned with the 4’ Principal. This would be the most precise way to do it. Using a meter on each pipe gets you in the ball park, but using your ear and the tuning stop will achieve a more cohesive sound. It is awesome to see you getting this organ back into playable condition. Play it often and it will work better than if it sits idle. Good luck!

@charleslayton9463 Жыл бұрын
This is the best explanation so far. (I haven't gone further down in the comments.) One further bit of information that is crucial: Since the "partials" (the upper harmonics of each individual note) that are played by the different mixture pipes are "pure", they won't necessarily be exactly in tune with the same length pipe from one of the standard ranks of the organ. This is because modern instruments are tuned in "equal temperament", meaning that every interval is stretched or compressed a little so that all the different keys sound alike. All are a little out of tune. This doesn't apply to the various tones played for each note in a mixture. They are usually tuned to some form of "pure" tuning so that their harmonics lock in with the fundamental note being played. So, yes, either you will have to take a crash course on organ tuning to get the mixture right, or you will need to have your organ technician come and give you a good tuning--which I'm sure you're planning to do anyway.

How many pipes per note does the Mixture have? The fewest is usually two ,and three are very common. A common three-rank Mixture will start like this on the bottom note, and the stop=knob might be labelled "Mixture 17, 19, 22" This means that when bottom C is played the E seventeen notes above will sound, and the G nineteen notes above and finally the C twenty-two notes above. A complication arises further up the keyboard when the pipes get too small. One rank will "break back" to a lower note so the pipe will be bigger again. Further up another one will break back and so on. Mixtures are extremely difficult to tune. It is necessary to silence all the pipes of a particular note except the one that is being tuned, always the lowest. This is done by muting the other pipes with a piece of cotton wool or something like that. When the pipe is in tune the next one must be done. The interval between the first and the second pipes must be tuned "pure" i.e. not in equal temperament which is what the electronic tuner will give you. Then on to the third pipe (if there is one). This is the most difficult of all because you will have the other two screaming at you. I think you really need a professional organ builder to tune a Mixture. They are extremely difficult for people such as yourselves. I hope this is useful to you.

A mixture is just that. Multiple ranks of pipes that play together, controlled by one stop. Each key will play two or more different notes. Re-building a mixture is very complicated. It requires knowledge and experience. There is some info on the internet about this that may help you but you may have to bring in an expert for this.

I think the osmo on the island door looks fantastic! I can't wait to see the whole island completed as well as the whole kitchen! The organ rebuild is so fascinating to me! I never imagined what the inside might look like! So cool!

You might be wise to talk with an organ builder or tuner. Different builders use different mixture pipe arrangements. They don’t follow the same chromatic pattern as the regular lowest to highest pattern. They help add harmonic color to the sound of the instrument. Good luck tuning a mixture is an art!

A mixture from what I recall is a combination of pipes plus a "mutation " which is a set of pipes at an interval from the fundamental. Typically these would accentuate one of the natural harmonics of the fundamental making even more harmonic speak. I would assume that a fifth above , a third or possible other enharmonic pitches are used... I imagine that large pipe organ would have several different mutation that can be brought into the mixture. If I recall correct ( it's been years) a fifth would give you a bassoon like sound due to how the pipes interact giving you sub harmonics. However it plays out , it would be an important set to ensure precise tuning of.... and not necessarily to an electronic tuner, but rather to a just tuning.

The kitchen took a while but was totally worth it, Billy!! Most won't take the time to bring the wood back to its beautiful self. Again, totally worth it!!!

I am not sure if this will help. My father and I used to refinish French Antiques. We found that the best way to remove the wax is lacquer thinner and steel wool or a wire brush. Wipe with cleN cloth and lt dry before osmo. If not for the kitchen center, but for future projects. Keep up the amazing work everyone!

About the mixtures! Mixtures are the crown of any chorus of pipes (usually principals, together with 8', 4', 2', and sometimes 1' stops). They are a collection of "mutations" of the fundamental pitch, and so if you're tuning using a phone it'll show up as a different pitch alltogether. Very basically, every sound has not just it's lowest pitch (the fundamental) but a series of harmonics above that pitch that sounds at different volumes to create its "timbre". It's why an A440 played on a violin sounds very different than an A440 played on a trumpet. Same pitch, different timbre. Mixtures use this idea to change how we perceive the timbre of the note and are never played by themselves. It's very easy to muck up the tuning on them so best to hire an organ tuner to handle your mixtures (and other mutation stops marked with odd or fraction numbers like 2 2/3") because if you use a phone app it won't be right. It uses a different tuning system.
@ThomasGoedecke Жыл бұрын
Oh and one more thing. The mixtures will play 2, 3, or even 4 pitches at a time, so one key is going to play a bunch of notes at the same time.

Looks like the “mixture” comments answers the dilemma. Some organs call it “Chimes”. Next, your question on F F # (2nd F# from left end of keyboard). Important: Diapason. This rank needs to be “detuned” from rest of organ. (Just a few beats like A-440 to 441 or 442) This gives an ethereal sound and you’ll hear the waves (beats). Whether you like waves faster or slower they all have to have the same speed. Tedious but the results are awesome!

Scraping the wax off first, or wax remover is better as the heat from the sanding will push the wax inside the grain, saves sandpaper too 😜
@michaelmorse1460 Жыл бұрын
Agree! You can also use a heat gun and/or acetone.

The Mixture is a mixed stop. It has more than one pipe on each note playing different harmonies. If it's a III rank mixture then there are 3 pipes playing on each note. If it's a IV rank mixture, then there are 4 pipes playing on each note. I think you will need an organ technician to help you on this.
@MrJustinkielty Жыл бұрын
This is correct. Multiple pipes will sound for each note played which are intended to reinforce the harmonic structure. You will need a competent organ technician to help. Further, the instrument was probably pitched at 435 or possibly lower. Attempting to tune to 440 without serious modifications to pipe length will be inviting trouble. It's too bad the same care lavished on the kitchen did not happen to the organ. Fine organ builders in England could have completely restored the organ and let the amateurs install in France. There are fine builders in France as well I'd give them a call and ask them to drop by when they finish with the Notre Dame work.
@forlifewelearn Жыл бұрын
If it hadn't been for the Pethericks, that fine organ would have been headed the way of many fine organs - the scrap heap. It can cost a fortune to restore them and they have used their considerable technical knowledge to mend it and put it back together. I agree that they're now probably at a stage where they will need to bring in someone to do the mixture and tune it properly, but I wouldn't knock what they've done - everything from the dismantling to the re-assembling and mending of parts has been done with the utmost care and dare I say it, better than a lot of organ builders would have done.
@knirbg Жыл бұрын
In many Dutch organs I have seen the pipes of the mixture not only have their pitch like C or C# but also a number marking their corresponding position on the keyboard. Follow those numbers and you will have the right position.
@blackmore56 Жыл бұрын
A mixture is an organ stop, usually of principal tone quality, that contains multiple ranks of pipes including at least one mutation stop. It is designed to be drawn with a combination of stops that forms a complete chorus (for example, principals of 8′, 4′, and 2′ pitches). The mixture sounds the upper harmonics of each note of the keyboard, adding a chord to each note played. The individual pitches in the mixture are not distinguished by the listener; rather, they reinforce the fundamental pitches of the chorus, adding volume and brilliance to the sound. Because pipes playing upper harmonics produce their own set of harmonic overtones, an element of harmonic dissonance is introduced, giving mixtures their characteristic tonal texture as they enrich the ensemble. Historically, the mixture descends from the medieval Blockwerk concept, an organ in which there were no stops and all the ranks sounded simultaneously.

Hi Billy & Michael. In response to your question about FF#. My friends Dad is a retired church organ tuner in the UK, he said that FF# means 8ft.Pitch, Open Diapason Tenor F Sharp. Still means nothing to me, but hopefully it does to you. Good luck x

On your mixture step, did you flip or turn around the support board? My wife is an organist and I an a piano technician, so I can follow what you are doing fairly well. By the way, those little round things that hold the end of the linkages together that look like nuts, are leather nuts. They cab be round or square. They can be finely manufactured or made by poking a hole in a leather scrap. Wire nuts are used widely holding the linkages in player pianos.
