Assessment and Management of Select Pediatric Emergencies

Dr. Austin has been an EMS provider since 1975 and an RN since 1984. Areas of specialization have been adult critical care including cardiac, surgical, trauma, and prehospital air and ground transport. She has been an EMS provider in multiple states and is an active member of the Pikesville Volunteer Fire Company. Dr. Austin is Professor Emerita in the Department of Nursing at Towson University. She has led multiple mass casualty exercises with an emphasis in serving pediatric patients. She is certified in emergency nursing, nursing education, and legal nurse consulting.

Dr. Bowers has been a nurse since 1987 and has worked with all age groups. She has worked clinically with all age groups and with the pediatric patient in NICU, PICU, pediatrics and pediatric oncology since 1992. Dr. Bowers has been a Clinical Assistant Professor at Towson University, teaching pediatrics since January of 2015. Dr. Bowers also works at the Meritus Pediatric After Hours urgent care center. She lives in a rural area in Western Maryland so she understands the importance of EMS education and how vital the role of EMS providers is in pediatric emergencies. She is a certified pediatric nurse and clinical nurse educator.
Objectives:
We will discuss the uniqueness of pediatric assessment and management in prehospital scenarios and case studies. We will include a discussion of associated MIEMSS protocols.
At the end of the presentation, learners will be able to:
Describe the physiological differences between children and adults that increase risk of hypovolemic shock due to dehydration;
Identify risks that can lead to pediatric hypovolemic shock (metabolic);
Apply the Pediatric Assessment Triangle to case studies;
Recognize key assessment findings that guide treatment; and
Discuss the treatment and management of the pediatric dehydration emergencies.
