Assetto Corsa: 1964 Shelby Daytona at Monza 1969

In 1948, the Milan Automobile Club initially chose to restore the Monza circuit to it's 1922 layout. The original 20 degree oval and final corner had been partially demolished in so many places that a new plan was set to build a new oval entirely with concrete, now at a staggering 30 degrees, which was completed in 1955. The final corner, now known as parabolica, was moved to help fit the new pit lane and garage area, which also needed to be rebuilt to "modern" standards.
For at least a time, Monza laid claim to being the fastest race track in the world, with track promoters heavily encouraging auto makers to set high speed records there. To get American attention, a "Race of Two Worlds" was held in 1957, inviting Indy 500 competitors to race against Formula 1 stars anticlockwise around the oval only. Unsurprisingly, the Americans fared well in their oval prepared cars, while most F1 teams withdrew for obvious safety reasons. After 2 races, the idea was abandoned.
With the introduction of 1.5 liter engines in Formula One in 1961, it was thought the Monza oval would be safer thanks to the reduced speeds. Although Wolfgang von Trips was not killed on the oval during the Italian Grand Prix, the drivers decided anyway to only use the road course from that day forward, leaving only Sports and GT cars to run the full 10K circuit.
In 1966 the FIA insisted chicanes be placed before the entry to eached banked turn, but after the 1969 running, no excuse could be made to defend running the banking in any vehicle. No officially sanctioned race was ever run again on the oval, with only a few exhibitions and demonstrations taking place in the decades after.
As time passes, the oval decays, but petitions are made to stop demolitions, citing its historical significance. Eventually it's believed funds will be raised to restore it into a historical landmark.
