I'm guessing it varies from wedding to wedding but I'd still be interested, especially in like the etiquette of who pays for what (like do the groomsmen pay for the bachelor's party? Do the bridesmaids have to pay for their hair and makeup if the bride requests it? How much sway do you give someone who's helping pay? Etc)

As an event planner, I tend to notice certain things when attending an event as a guest. Not nit-picky just taking mental notes. True story...I attended a wedding of someone who originally hired me to assist with her wedding. I would make appointments with vendors and she wouldn't show up nor call to let me know she wouldn't be there. After we spoke, I told her if she was unsure that I was the planner for her, that it was okay and no hard feelings. She ultimately went with another planner. I, along with mutual friends, attended her wedding and reception. After the couple cut the cake, it was announced that guests would have to cut their own piece of multi-tiered Fondant-iced cake. After a mad dash by guests, including children, to cut their piece, I couldn't just sit there. I went over and cut the cake for them as the wedding planner walked around the reception talking to guests. I don't know if the couple ever knew. Great video!

My wedding cost under 750 dollars and we had over a 100 guests :p may be the least fancy party I ever hosted, but GOD it was fun, drunk and awesome. My (now) husband was a phD student at the time and had access to rent a cheap as fuck student bar, so that was the venue. we invited people for dessert time (no dinner - only to those who came and helped set up, do not worry, they got food!). The dessert was 100 individual, traditional danish strawberry cakes, which I found at half price at a very decent supermarket banker and moreover a banana cake for the vegans. We served some beers and 30 liters of squash/vodka (classy stuff), but when it ran out people could buy whatever they wanted in the bar for very, very cheap prices. Around midnight we served a shit ton of bread, cheese, sausage, jam, peanut butter ect and people thought it was so delicious, simple and awesome (and made some ... questionable creations, probably due to the aforementioned squash/vodka). It was just such a terrific day and night and we were able to invite everybody. Quite a few people came up to me and said 'well this is fantastic! it is like being on a festival!' because the vibe was just buzzing with beer, music and laughter until 05.30 in the morning. Would not have changed a single thing, if I were to host again today.

Do wedding planners get commission from each vendor used? I feel like my wedding planner is trying to get us to hire more vendors for this reason. Is that me being crazy?

I’m a wedding planner and I do get discounts from some companies (mostly rentals) but I pass that along to the client. It’s part of the job to help them save money! Other than that I only refer vendors that I believe would have a great connection with the client. In my area, kickbacks are not regarded as good business.

ScarletMSG89 brunch weddings can be a ton of fun and you can eliminate some of the more expected events if you’d rather. I did one a few years back and it was very nice to not have tons of drunk people dancing for hours throughout the night and we also got completely cleaned out & loaded up by 8 pm!

If we get the higher budget and me not my mother in law to be ends up the primary planner you might just get that wedding. My proposed color palate is burgundy as the top color eggplant as the secondary color with tertiary colors of forest green, royal blue and a fuchsia that is as dark as amethyst and ruby. I'm also suggesting disrupting the Sunny happy feel with music being tremelancholic tragedy songs ( Recital hall not dance hall) with a string quartet and a singer.

I would love to see a video on DJ vs band for the reception. How to decide which is best for you and what questions to ask when booking. It has been hard looking for music for my wedding since photography and flowers I can look at pictures but with music you just see video clips or pictures. How do you choose a DJ that will work with your music taste if it is not mainstream like most of the advertising is geared towards? Also, many DJs offer lighting services and draping. Is it better to hire a company that specializes in these services or take advantage of a DJ package? What about DJ-photo-video packages? Thanks!

People have no idea what goes into a business. Like you said, you did not start making a profit until after a couple of years. Also taxes do suck for small businesses. People also dont realize that you have to match employees taxes. Which can be a big down fall.

Hey Jamie! I recently discovered your channel and I'm obsessed with it! I'm not getting married yet (only 17 hihi), but I am thinking about maybe becoming a wedding planner. I am not from the US or an English speaking country, and even though I know English a lot of these very spesific words (like reception and cocktail hour) are not words I am familiar with. I am sure this is a problem for some other people as well. These things might be things we have in our culture, just with a different name, and therefore it would be really helpful if you could give a brief explination of terms like these.
