I think it's interesting that Astarion is the most positive when Tav comments specifically on the features that were changed when he became a vampire (his eyes and mouth).

I kinda wonder if Astarion doesnt act serious because he's protecting himself. Like he dosent want to catch to many feelings incase something goes wrong. Hence his general flirty sarcastic attitude. I wouldnt be surprised if he is constantly on guard waiting for Cazador or one of his minions to come out of the shadows to get him. Or is just waiting for this whole tadpole event to go utterly sideways, kind of thing. Well thats just how I read him.

That's EXACTLY what I thought when I first started talking to Astarion; haven't romanced anyone besides Shadowheart so far, but I've always liked Astarion and try to get along with him because he's fun. He definitely comes across like someone of two masks: Aloof and Arrogant. But behind them seems to be a cracked vase trying to hide from anything more than a harsh breeze; I really hope they'll flesh out the more friendly route with him too so he can have a confidant in either way and that we get to learn more about him throughout the game

Astarion's still my favorite character, his sultry woe is me expression aside, they did well so far characterizing him with nuance. I actually do think his wrap-up is fine. If someone isn't used to being genuinely intimate with someone else in a sincere/vulnerable way, re-creating a bit of distance by being standoffish or aloof right after helps. Bit personal I suppose, but it's something I tend to do, so might just be me/just my perspective, but I think it makes sense here, intentional or not, because backstabby vampires.

This is why I like Astarion, the events and dialogue that leads up to the romance really draws you in and helps you come closer to the character. They need to have this kind of stuff for the other romances!(especially Gale, in my opinion!😍)

I agree completely! My one complaint is that I really want to see them flesh out the other companions as well. Gale had a lot of scenes already though, so maybe they feel like he's good for now. But what about Laezel, Wyll, Shadowheart?! There's not nearly enough there.

@@svoba4af what always gets me whenever you say or do something to Astarion that may come off as a personal insult (with the exception of making fun of his trauma) is that he doesn't react as negatively as on might expect, if at all. Really plays well this double edge Astarion has. He's skin deep full of himself, but used to being humiliated and disappointed to the core.

@@svoba4af I also think that being a little "hostile" in a lovingly teasing manner is the way. This is how you breach the wall of the "seducer-seduced" game. If you just plainly butter him up he dismisses it as either you already eating off his hands (which he doesn't respect, it makes you the looser of the game) or trying too hard to seduce him (the thought he cannot let stand, because he sees himself as a predator in this particular dynamic). If you refuse to play by the rules and move the game out of the chess board, he knows it's real. Remember that smile when you show a little aggression during the romance scene? This is him taking something real out of this relationship. It sounds bad, but he used to do this so many times for reasons that were not his own and with the explicit intention to not get attached that it'll take a friendly kick between the familiar dance moves, for this experienced dancer to notice you're not putting your arms around him because it's just a part of the choreography. And the deeper, darker layer to that is we always tend to mirror our previous relationships, with family, friends, etc. And it looks like, sadly the only lasting relationship that he has is the abusive one with Cazador. We can imagine that every potentially healthy one must have been doomed for obvious reasons, ending in tragedy and disappointment. Sweet tastes sour to him. Juvenile, fleeting. Not real. But more grounded if it stings a little. Real.

@@Mmogurl strangely enough, I'm kinda both. E.g. I can give honest compliments no problem, but I can't take them very well. If it's too much emotion, I sometimes have to/want to leave the room for a bit - like during a movie or something. It's a very unpleasant feeling, worse if you know, it shouldn't be like that. I think it's a matter of being used to it, because for me, it's gotten worse since lock-downs. Astarion is a very well written character. 200 yrs of no control over his life + constant abuse. This shower of niceness must have been overwhelming. It's no wonder he attracts all the women. Naturally we want to repair him xD

tbh, I think it does make sense that he doesnt tell you that you are beautiful back when you tell him he is beautiful since he only says that when you jokingly say that he isn't as 'handsome' as Gale. When you just straight up say that 'you're beautiful' it is indicative that he doesn't need to 'work' too much to have your approval in his eyes. He strikes me as a person who loves the thrill of the chase, so this is pretty consistent to his character imo.

This is such a sweet interaction. Whether you're pursuing him as a friend or love interest, in this scene you can actually feel your bond with Astarion growing, where he's shifting away from using you as protection to being more comfortable/vulnerable with you. He's too adorable, ugh I can't take it. 😵

I think this will end up being my all time favorite game, because it's the only one that makes it hard to resist a character that's "evil"... as much as I will always love Alistair and Cullen, Astarion seems like he has so many layers to him. The writers have done an amazing job making him so believable and irresistible.

Yes! I know exactly what you mean! Alistair was always special for me because he was "my first" romance in a game. When I played DAO for the first time, I played it like 4 years after it came out and had no idea what it was about. I was legit SHOCKED when he wanted to kiss me and had to shut my door and lock it when the sex scene happened lmao. I was always looking for the game guy that would replicate that feeling of it being so new and exciting.. or at least feel the same way.. but it just never really happened. I really like Cullen.. and I like Solas too.. Astarion was the first one to surprise me in the way Alistair did though. And he is much more complex, and I love that about his character! Man he's so sultry too! Like Alistair you could tease about being a virgin.. but Astarion on the other hand? Wooooo! *fans self*

@@egilsaga That's what I don't like about these games. I can't play my character the way I want AND gain the approval of the characters I want... My character is forced to act 'out of character' at some point which annoys me and breaks the whole immersion. That's why I loved Pillars of Eternity. As far as I remember the characters commented on your choices I think but there was no "he liked/disliked all choices you made and leaves the group" stuff. And the ending was the best (little spoiler warning I guess) Before the last bossfight, they kinda tell you that they may not like your decisions but because you went through this journey together for who knows how long, they'll stick by you no matter what choices you make. THAT's how it's supposed to be. In games like Baldurs Gate (1 & 2 because I haven't played 3) the friendship with your comrades seems like the kind of friendship you don't need or want. Like boy if you don't like the way I am you can f*ck off. It's been 3 years and you've fought through battles and experienced near death situations numerous times together but don't you dare choose the wrong colored shirt or he'll leave immidiately. (Sorry for the rant on a year old post XD)

This is my favorite amongst the new Astarion scenes. He’s so vulnerable. The way he says “I want to know what the world sees when it looks at me...what YOU see...” my fucking HEART First time I played this I poked fun at him some and it balanced out as some playful flirting with some serious vulnerability. Astarion is the one character where I feel it’s more natural at building the romance based off the bread crumbs that are dropped with the flirtatious dialogue. Sure the Weave scene with Gale is super romantic but the option to envision kissing Gale doesn’t seem as rewarding as there was little to no romantic buildup prior. Also: I didn’t get the scar scene to trigger until after killing the Gur.

RIGHT?! I was like UNNNNGH - that expression too! And I agree that Astarion is the only companion that has a buildup that actually makes sense for a budding romance. Gale is there too, but it feels weird because I can only ever trigger it as a wizard. Otherwise it's like some strange mage who tags along but never talks LOL. I killed the gur in my main playthru and still didn't get the scars scene.. I refuse to watch someone else's video because I HAVE to see it myself first.. but I am scared to spend the time playing if I don't get it again. X_X

Right after the Gut, Astarion had the exclamation point. Without spoiling anything, he says something along the lines of ‘well no wonder that Gur was out to get me’. So idk 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think you consider the "romance build up" with Astarion to work better (compared as with the other companions) in the wrong way : he was used by Cazador to lure victims into his den, we can assume that flirting and tempting was his daily work. Thus I see all those "flirting" moments as what he feels more confortable with, what he does best, what he was taught to be for 200 years. The true honests moments he has are those when he is vulnerable/angry, not controling himself to be at his best, and those are the real build up for future relationship with him to me. :) The previous "love scene" we had until now shows that well to me : Astarion was all playing a show "I was waiting for that moment since I set eyes on you". This feels like theater, and I do bellieve a more honest Astarion will appear later on another "love scene" that will not be a play, and I can't wait fro that moment. :3 (I absoluetly love him, but these flirting moments don't seem sincere, they seem like he would have acted the same with any other woman, you know, like he learned his lines ?). Don't get me wrong though, he definitly likes Tav more than anyone else in the group at this point (that is depending on your choices of course), but I do not think his whole "soliloquy" here (sex scene) was what he really felt deep inside. Plus it takes place during the one night you can finally relax all together, and for most of the companions, it's more of a "let's enjoy this night and have fun" than a "let's build a long term relation ship". La'zael only wants to **** you as a praize and is not thinking one second about feelings, Gale as his "I wanna know if I could still conquer a woman" moment (I mean, he obviously still feel for his godess, and I feel you're more of a charisma test/replacement, than a true lover for him at that moment), ShadowHeart building is quite logic to me (she slowly comes to trust you, so why not enjoy that night with the only person she trusts in this camp ?), and Wyll is... Erh, wyll ? (I never uses him, I've even never have found him on my first playthrough xD).

Playing on launch a year later here. You got it pretty much down packed for the most part. Near the end, the more honest, truer version of Astarion.. at least when he seems to be actually serious is more subdued from his normal very sarcastic, mean and flirty attitude. He speaks much softer and acts a bit more shy, which I guess is probably closer to who he really is deep down. His VA did a wonderful job switching it up and you can certainly feel the vunerablity in his voice. While, I do think he is putting on mostly an act to protect himself some of both versions of him can be true. All we know from his past life is that he was a magistrate that pissed off the gur people leading to an attack that may or may not have had Cazador invovled and may or may not have had Astarion sending Gur people to prisons for vampire feeds. Which basically means Astarion was kind of an attorney in his previous life, someone meant to hold up the law. He was in the upper side of society, so you assume he had to be smart and have some kind of moral code if just at one point in his life. Not sure if he was corrupted by choice or force. I do kind of wish we could get a tiny bit more about his past life other than that though.

Honestly I love how the compliment and reflected on someone else's eyes things are seperate. It allows a fresh sort of romance each time, rather than only one option giving a great answer. Kind of like how in Dragon Age where you can either ask your love interest to your tent, or you can be patient and they'll ask themselves. Patience definitely pays of there with Alistair, but with Zev it's about equal with that teasing dialogue when you ask him.

He just wants somebody to stroke his ego. Also, I think when he says he needs to sleep to catch up to competition, I think he means to the person you compared him with. When you said that your Tav is a you that could express things in a way you normally cannot it really resonated with me. BG3 is the first rpg I’ve played solo and it just feels so good not having to behave within the confines of a what is expected in the real world. I can openly pursue a man (or even two! or a woman!) without being told I’m too bold for a woman or that I’m asking for too much. I can befriend all the animals without being called a crazy cat lady!

Funny. Astarion and laezel are the only ones I think make sense to flirt out of no where. Astarion sounds as if he flirts with most. Seems like he's heavily inspired by Tom elis in lucifer. Laezel also makes sense as she's an alien that has a very different definition of romance. They mate with the strong for the most part, makes sense that she sees the bold actions of the player and how they handled combat and instantly starts flirting

yesssss X) !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Girl, I've been waiting for you to cover this scene since it's one of my favorites as well! You literally hit all the marks on my overall thoughts for it so I feel like I don't have much to add beyond thanking you for another lovely scene analysis ♡. I will say that it's definitely not just you. Larion has definitely taken their time with Astarion and the romance build with him more so I feel than others just in how much conversation, choices, and scenes that have been put into it. He's not what I'd call a slow-burn romance the way that Shadowheart is, but they both definitely make you put in work for it which I must say is well worth it for the pay off & for absolute gems like this scene. They've done it with Gale as well but compared to Astarion & Shadowheart the weave scene & the after party moments with him feel extremely abrupt in comparison. Also, because you mentioned it I must say that Lae'zel's interest while definitely abrupt I feel is meant to be more blunt, generally speaking, and as a part of who and what she is rather than a lack of work. I truly (HOPE) believe there will be far more build up with her in the full release of the game where Tav will be able to become someone she sees as a worthy partner instead of a fun romp in the bedroll when she fancies it. A part of why I think that is 100% the fact that if she comes onto Tav at the party & is rejected, she has NO problem looking to other members of the party to satisfy her. For right now at least it's the furthest thing from personal as it could possibly be & I feel some major slow burning is gonna happen before we see whatever she may feel for Tav go beyond that, & rightfully so given the lack of build there has been. & lastly without spoiling anything scene-specific I will say I hope you manage to get the scars scene soon so you can see it for yourself as aside from this one, it's one of my absolute favorite scenes between Astarion & Tav! It's not nearly as flirty as this scene gives you the option to be but it definitely matches it in intimacy & how very vulnerable Astarion can be when it comes to Tav & Tav alone (so far), there's a speck of dialogue that even hints at Astarion definitely caring about Tav quite a bit more than he's acted/verbalized so far beyond enjoying them as a companion, ally, and lover. I could be reading too far into it *straightens my shipper glasses*, but it's part of why I'm looking forward to you seeing it yourself & hearing your thoughts on it. All that aside though, I can definitively promise you it's well worth the work to make that scene pop! As always this was fantastic, can't wait for the next one! PS: First time I saw this scene I totally went for teasing him first then soothing his frazzled self with some genuine feedback because ngl I love the more banter/flirty mix dialogue options they give you options for with Astarion because I feel it just fits nicely & I'm a sucker for ships where the two aren't just lovers but are playmates & best friends as well which means some good natured roasting from time to time. BUT-------, I did save before this scene on my playthrough and I gotta say the straight sincere options rather than starting with teasing definitely lends a certain something to the scene that even with Astarion turning things playful doesn't dissipate the scene itself being... softer for it somehow. Uggggh I neeeed to see that scene. Like it's been bugging me but I haven't had a lot of extra time to do a single playthrough just for one scene that I'm not sure I can even get to trigger.. but I really need to see it, so I guess I'm gonna be playing again lmao. Also, I totally agree about the playful side and I enjoy teasing him as well although my first instinct is always to be completely sappy LOL. We were SPOILED with this scene ok 🙌 so many choices and all of them fantastic in their own way in their outcomes ❤️❤️❤️ But I know what you mean, I’ve seen a few scenes floating around in my recs portion of KZbin for other party members that have had me like 👀 WHERE DID YOU GET THAT/HOW DID YOU GET THAT!!? So the need is very real, you aren’t alone 👁👄👁. As far as getting the scene I may have some tips since I’ve gotten it on all 3 of my consecutive playthroughs but don’t take any of it as gospel, I may not know what I’m talking about 😬 1. I’ve seen it enough in my own playthroughs and those of others that it’s highly likely each time your Tav reaches a new tier of status with a party member they’re probably gonna have some new dialogue at camp. SO, do what you’d normally do to pop the major scenes with Astarion (the boar the bite the book the mirror the after party) but pay close attention to your status with him cause before I knew what probably triggered new dialogue with party members I missed SO MUCH 😭 by not paying attention to that at all. 2. It’s not definitive but I’ve yet to get that scene to pop without romancing Astarion and going through with the after party scene with him since it’s after that where Tav sees his bare back and the scars on it for the first time (a fact that literally makes me 🥺 cause you gotta think about how long they’ve been traveling together at this point & how careful he’s probably been to hide it from everyone till now). 3. Both times I’ve had the scene pop Astarion was at VERY HIGH for his approval status with Tav. GOOD LUCK FRIEND!!!

I have to say, I always go for the comparison choices at the end of this dialogue. It's just so much better than just the basic "you're beautiful" choice. I'd argue that he flirts with you more if you choose "not as good as gale" or whoever. That whole jokingly mopey "I thought we had something special" and the thing about there being competition? It's so much more blatant flirting to me with that option than if you just tell him he's beautiful.

I think you're helping to make the game better because I think they do watch your videos! All of the changes you suggested I 100% felt the same way when I was doing my play through. Having the dialogue delivered in just the most fitting way really does make a difference, especially in term of replayability. I love going through the motions over and over with this character and especially with Astarion. I just can't get enough! For me it's dialogue options like this that turns an amazing game into a legendary game. Take Outer Worlds for instance. That game is truly brilliant. But this in depth of building relationships with the characters is what it was missing. All the options and how those options bring different options. Not only that but Neil Newbon literally recorded the same lines several times in different ways. And that's what make this game delicious. That's what we've all been craving... A game that feels real! Don't stop making these kinds of videos, I love them!

Pheeeeeew dear sweet lord my HEART! I felt my heart break and then flutter back to life all in one video! This dialogue really does bring to mind some things we take for granted, and I almost forgot that one of the side effects of being a vampire, is that you can't see your reflection. More so, he can't even REMEMBER what he looks like... If Larian ever gave us the option to draw a picture of him if we were skilled enough to, that would probably be the most heartfelt gift Astarion could ever receive; a reminder that not everything is lost, something he could look back to with a genuine, elated smile every time he looks at the gift you gave to him: his reflection. Sentimentality aside, I would be earnest to be his eyes, his mirror on what everyone sees. Although, I won't lie, I would probably look down a couple of times while blushing, but I'll take it if it means Astarion can feel cheered up. ♥♥😊

He certainly remembers more than he says - he might want to see his old home when he´s looking into the magic mirror. But it makes sense that he´s forgoten the color of his eyes (it would be sweet to tell him his eyes were probably blue or green since he´s high moon elf if the player is also an elf). It got me thinking it´s almost adorable that he actually doesn´t know he´s hot but he remembers that he is and many people act like he is, hence all the bravado :D

The first video I ever made on BG3 was on this very topic, because I mistook the narrator's message when you finish early access to mean that I could turn into a vampire. xD I still REALLY want this to happen, and it's so perfect that we just happen to have a vampire in the party.. and who knows what will happen when we get to Cazador too! You know, this is the scene where his guards are down perhaps the most. Being Astarion, he is basically asking you to compliment him and is frustrated when you're not doing it but it's sweet nonetheless. Even if there is no cheerful ending for him, this is one of the momentě I'll choose to remember.

So, the real romance scene has been gone since a hotfix in patch 3. I only ever got to see it once! Look on my channel for Astarion patch 3 romance to see it. There is a huge scene with a kiss and a glomp and it was AMAZING! I wonder if perhaps they didn't mean to release it and that's why they took it out again. I've been dying inside waiting for them to put it back though so that I could kiss that beautiful man again on new versions of Tav!

For me, they all just happened after completing events in game and then taking a long rest. The one scene I couldn't get to trigger was the scars scene, but from what I've read it can be glitchy on a tiefling. On top of that it usually happens after the camp celebration and I went with an evil game which probably made it worse bugwise. The other 3 scenes triggered with no issues though while raising his approval and doing all of his quests - ie dealing with gur.. finding the boar.. getting bit.. etc etc.
