You can tell that she's not only performing this song, she feels every word & you can see it in her eyes. Especially at the end where she is still there in that world until the applause snaps her out of it. Such a tragic story of a beautiful & talented woman who was taken far too soon because of the pressure.

The documentary recently shown on BBC to mark the 25th anniversary of Lena’s death closed with this footage, which I hope will prompt many viewers to search for the full version of this mesmerizing performance. Just 17 at the time of this recording, it is painful to imagine the emotional and physical distress which we now know was already afflicting this shy, sweet girl. Lena’s self-effacing smile as she receives the applause melts my heart every time I see it. What a voice. What a performance. And what a talent we lost.

I found it very sad that two of the songs featured in the documentary were "Superstar" and "Sweet Sweet Smile" recorded by the Carpenters, Karen Carpenter being also a victim of anorexia nervosa...😢

Gives me goosebumps. Her talent was so very extraordinary but instead of thrusting her into the limelight with all it’s pressures, maybe she’d have been happier on the tiny, remote Scottish island she called home.

I interviewed Lena (for radio) at the Playhouse Theatre in Edinburgh back in 1980. I got the impression that she was bit of a lost soul. At the time I felt she needed a big hug, and to be told that she was loved. Such an exceptional talent. R.I.P. Lena. You're missed.

Zavaroni would have been one of the true greats without her demons. This is worthy of Garland, Streisand, Franklin,or Bassey. This is an epic performance. There is no recording of this, it is only available on KZbin. In 1981 she was 18.

Me too! All this RIP business, don’t mean to be disrespectful but, I hope wherever she is she gets all the rest she needs & some more, but I also hope she’s also still singing🎵 🎶🎶, writing songs? and partying sometimes. Going places, in excellent loving company , maybe even dare I say been reincarnated, I do NOT believe we have one only life, NO. Of course she is an old soul as a couple of people said, I would say an old wise soul, all the wiser now after being Lena, bless you sweetheart! I say that only because I was a few years older than Lena then, but maybe she’s older than me now, who knows? We don’t know until we get there. Then after a rest however long -🎉 I hope! Most folk deserve that, especially those who suffer. Nowadays…… enough Valerie, sorry do NOT mean to preach, just hope I meet her soon as I am old & very ill & in great physical pain now. Thank you for helping me find this & reminding me about Lena & her great amazing voice & her singing especially this great Neil Sedaka classic. I bet in time she would could have written her own classics! 🎶🎶🎵❤️🎉🪽🕊️💜🥰

Did Lena write the song? I'm rather embarrassed now because she was brought to my attention only a few days ago. The performance is stunning, and probably my favorite of hers so far. The pain in her eyes is palpable; it runs deep, and reaches into every single word. From what I gather of her story, her illness may have been partly genetic (her mother was also mentally ill, I think), and partly the result of pressure and performing too early, without her family around. Her manager seemed cold and aloof, with no maternal instincts. There's been even some speculation about sexual abuse, which Lena perhaps kept secret. My feeling is that even had it not been for her career, her life would have ended sadly, although prolonged. Whatever the case may be, she was a great soul with outstanding talent, and she moved me to tears. Perhaps the light within her was too much for this world, and it manifested as mental illness. I hope you're doing beautifully, Lena.

I just watched the documentary on her life from her first appearance on Opportunity Knocks until her untimely death. The crass comment from Russell Harty saying that people preferred her as her usual ‘chunky self’, did nothing to help this powerhouse of talent. It was so sad seeing her decline from a normal wee girl, into the skeletal body she inherited, because she didn’t get the help she so badly needed until it could take no more, pneumonia finally claiming her life at the age of 35. It moved me to tears.

Lena was a wonderful talent with such a superb voice. Watching this gave me goosebumps. Her voice control, pitch and interpretation of this song is amazing. Her life was so tragic.. forced to diet from a young age as a child, relentlessly over worked and exploited by a pushy showbiz agent throughout her career, Lena was an overnight child star whose gentle soul couldnt cope with the immense fame. She was one of the most talented entertainers in the UK and her early death was just heartbreaking.

@andysaunders7102 жыл бұрын
Fascinating to those who don't sing. However there often has to be a need for a singer to sing a song and I think the AOR (artist and repertoire person) knew exactly what they were doing. She really taps into the psychology and intent of the song (remember we are watching someone in their teens, you ask where is that intuitive knowingness coming from...) Neil Sadaka wrote from a different era though we all see the signs displaying themselves right now. A cry for help these days is never heard, just one less mouth to feed cynically. Let this song not be a song of hopelessness but a chance to stop "Going Nowhere!. I really really miss her........, " Very Deeply ".
