Aston Martin AM37, 1040hp powerboat review

Beautiful "unobtanium" boat. Enjoyed the views of Monaco. Took me back 50 years. My ship spent 2 weeks over Christmas '69 & New Years anchored just down the coast at Villefranche-sur-mer. A buddy & I took a day liberty & went to Monaco. Walked the course of the Grand Prix & spent a few hours at the Oceanographic Museum. It's the 4 story tall by very wide white building at the top of the cliff above Harry right after he left the speed limited harbor. We were in our dress blues and in the museum a weathered "old" man came over, introduced himself, & chatted with us for a while. It was Jacques Cousteau. Besides his well known ocean exploration films he was also a retired French naval officer & Curator of the Monaco Oceanographic Museum. I enjoy Harry's videos & this one was very special.

Well it is a dual mid engine, rear steer, roofless, frontcabin malarkey. It's obviously just a engineer's wet dream proof of concept build, that will never pass the Euro NCAP, not to mention there's no way they'd get the emissions on two massive V8s under any sort of acceptable, road legal limit. So yeah, who cares? It looks magnificient and may as well handle like a boat as well as it makes press!

Growing up around boats my favorite memory is idling into docks or Marinas, I miss that low idle sound more than the high speeds. Didn't get around high horsepower boats until later and same thing, of course they are awesome at speed but I still love that low rpm, high horsepower rumble around the docks!

Those Mercury Racing 540's cost $52k each, the diesel motors start at $45k so the actual price difference should be a fraction of what it is. It's a med spec boat, so open to the elements when in use, just like a Riva is. Seals completely via the key when 'parked' up..

Decided this year that I "need" an Aquarama in my life by next summer at all costs, hopefully it's going to happen. I fell in love with this at first sight but by the end of the video I have to say that I'd fallen out of love with it, can't pinpoint why exactly but I think it's a number of things - mostly though I'd still rather have the Riva, although obviously it's a very different boat to this. Real shame they couldn't have marinised some Aston motors for it to have been all AM - it's been done in the past and they were epic, if a little unreliable but we have access to far superior tech now. Great boat of course, great video as usual too, just glad I won't be wondering where I'm going to lay my hands on one and a half mil by next summer - always assuming there would be one available. Thanks Harry, always bringing us something unique.

I don't think there was any mention of them being made from some other company, just that it was the first "AM" with a diesel option. And what even would be the difference of "aquifying" an AM road car engine? How is that not the same as AM themselves making a boat engine? Sorry Harry, as a boat lover the AM37 looks swish but nothing mindblowing, however I'm confused as to the 1.4 mil GBP price tag. Prototypes usually cost millions and nowhere near the final production costs. Stripping away the AM logos and some trendy design features this boat should be in the 250,000 GBP price bracket. Despite the sexy windscreen you still stick your head above it. Here in Oz 1.4 mil GBP (AS$2.4 mil) would buy a brand new luxurious Maritimo M68 cruising motoryacht or or the fantastic (USA) Marine Technology Inc M48 powered by twin Mercrury Racing 1350hp engines (150+mph). My own humble Bayliner 185 220hp can also top out at 50mph and is probably worth less than the steering wheel on the AM37!! I would have appreciated a much more balanced overview instead of the gushing superlatives in every sentence! Having never seen your vids I will view them out of respect.

There are lots of other boats that could probably match the AM37 performance for a lot less money but that's like comparing a £110,000 Jaguar F-Type SVR to a £1.5M Aston Martin One-77. I once owned a Windy 37 which had more responsive steering and equally impressive hull as this prototype AM37S but this first review isn't a definitive verdict on the AM37 because that has to wait until I test the production version. I'm with you I love boats and for the money I'm really not impressed, slow to get up and away low top end for the size boat vs money to buy. It did seem to bite in well on the turn and the head looked OK and the dash, controls and steering wheel looked very nice, but not 1.6m nice those seats looked bad didn't like them at all and the cabin just looked like any other entry level boat apart from the wood I wouldn't part with that money for it that's for sure.

Interesting, as I have owned boats for many years and keep my current one, a Princess 61, in a nearby marina to where I filmed this AM37. I also do regular reports for Motorboat and Yachting, which is one of the world's best respected magazines covering this area of the market. This was a good review for car enthusiasts. The channel isn't called Harry's car garage its called Harry's Garage. You could in theory put that boat into a garage including Harry's personal garage. I am a sailor and have been around a few nice yachts and exquisite boats. This boat is nice but wouldnt have me spending over 1 million on it. I would rather purchase a boat from a historical boat maker for 1 million. Either way this is a good review.

I think the more appropriate question would be what's the gpm (gallons per mile)! Usually with boats they spec them at gallons burned per hour at a specific, nominal cruising speed. Then again, if you're spending $1.6 million on a 37 foot boat, the fuel economy probably isn't your primary concern.

Well done Harry, Thought that if it were an Aston Martin boat that the lumps would have 12 cylinders not V8's. Anyway very entertaining and i quite liked the idea of the perspex or glass sliding roof, But it should really have been able to be closed and still steer it!. thanks for all the fun, haven't commented before but have really enjoyed your"garage"..
