Thanks for posting this. I was at the game and have not seen a dirtier match at Villa Park. Barcelona just tried to kick us off the pitch. Withe was getting kicked all game but got his own back as Shaw scored. Their goalie was a nutter and Cowans was lucky not to get a serious injury when the keeper kicked him into the back of the net after the penalty. Unbelievable stuff.

LOL Who won the first head to head match? 77/78 UEFA Cup quarterfinal for a reminder. 82 European Cup was the top 3 win in the tournament’s history. No wonder why after that they: 1) lost 2:0 to Peñarol in the Intercontinental Cup 2) robbed Barça in the Supercups with an elbow to the face knockouting Migueli The only periods when Barça wasn’t a top team were 30s and mid-60s. Majority Villa’s history were failures.

I was at this game. It’s funny how Barcelona are such a revered football team these days. Back then, they still had star players - I think their main man in this team was the German, Bernd Schuster - but they were just a bunch of dirty cheats from what I remember. We totally outplayed them

Schuster was a great player and in the 1980 Euros he was the best player. Later on his character made him to not to be chosen by the German national team. Had Germany had him in 1982 they would probably won the World Cup. He won Liga titles with Barcelona, Real and Athelic Madrid. At the time Spanish clubs could only have 2 foreign players and Barcelona always tried to get the best player of the World. They had Cruyff and Neskeens in the 1970's and had Schuster and Mardona in the 1980's followed by Lineker after the 1986 World Cup. Barca had Romario and Stiockov in the early 1990's followed by Ronaldo the brazilian and later had Rivaldo and Ronaldinhio before the Messi years. At one time or another these players were considered the best in the World of the time. Probably not even Real Madrid can say they had this much quality players. By the way I am a Liverpool fan and no fan of Barca, however truth must be told.

Anthony Walsh Yes back in those days, the Super Cup was a two legged home and away tie. Villa had lost 1-0 to Barcelona at the Nou Camp,but courtesy of Gary Shaw's goal, were 1-0 up after 90 minutes, and were 1-1 on aggregate. In extra time, Villa scored 2 more goals, to win 3-0,with Barcelona totally losing the plot, and having 3 players red carded

Yeah, absolutely ghastly, isn't it! Acid yellow, blue and red is a horrible colour combination to start with, and on top of that the placement of the vertical band on the shirt creates a jarring asymmetry. If you have to have a single stripe (and it's not advisable), it needs to be placed centrally.

Yep Peter Taylor clough right hand man said he would have capped cowans early in 1980...but why did Morley not go to Spain..people said he did not do much but he did not play poorly, you have to give good runs in a side..Morley never made along with Cowans it to Spain 1982, I would have picked Viv Anderson instead of Phil Neal for the right back slot in this 1980-82 period..but i get your point about gidman..players like Regis, Swain, Alvin Martin, Statham along with those Villa players could have bigger England careers under Clough/Taylor
