A studio made up of only 65 devs made this game in only 3.5 years is remarkable. Japan is like a whole different world than the rest. When you realize how high their level of awareness and discipline is compared to the rest of the world from schools not needing janitors because students have discipline to clean up the schools you start to see how this reflects in the work they do and the products they make. It's no secret sauce really. Discipline and S tier work ethic can go a long way

Umm it's also just a way more manageable game than the usual AAA affair in terms of scope? Stylized graphics with way less detail, smaller levels, way shorter playtime, no mocap, no voice acting, no script writing etc. Like, yeah, I'm sure they worked hard on that game, but let's not act like Western devs are somehow lazy lol
@CheckmateStallioNАй бұрын
@@Christopher-md7tf for a team of 65 devs in a 3.5 years timespan they achieved what only AAA studios of hundreds of employees can achieve in that time. You forgot about CDPR's crunch culture and how that turned out for Cyberpunk? The art direction perfectly fits this game. "Less detail" is the wrong term here. The LoD is great for this type of art direction when all the chars are robots and the environments are robotic renders of their living counterparts. Plus not every game has to be photorealistic. Photorealistic games age horribly. Also "shorter playtime" works if you play it once not including the many hidden collectibles and high replay value for speedrunning. Not every game has to be 50-100 hours and mocapped my guy. You are comparing this to big budget AAA games which take 5-10 years to make which I also love. Apples and oranges! Where did I say that western devs are "lazy"?

@@CheckmateStallioN "for a team of 65 devs in a 3.5 years timespan they achieved what many AAA devs can't achieve in that time" "Also why are you comparing this to big budget AAA games " lol Also, I didn't claim that the art direction doesn't fit the game or that it should have been photorealistic. I'm just making the point that this game was possible to make with a smaller team and less dev time than usual because of the nature of the project, not because the devs are Japanese.

I wish Astro had some sort of dive or roll, something that gives your base movement a bit of burst that you could chain together. I've been playing that new Mario Sunshine mod (Eclipse), putting Mario's dive, roll-out etc one after another always feels great. Maybe there isn't as much need for it in a game like Astro as your not left to your own devices nearly as much, but I think it would've given the character's movement a little bit of depth and personality.

On the subject of nitpicks (and these are most assuredly nitpicks, as the game is near flawless, but as the person who asked that question said, "there's always room for improvement", I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more enemy variety along with enemies having perhaps a bit more complexity in terms of how to deal with them. Common enemies that appear throughout the game are pretty much dealt with by either just punching them in the face, or flying over and hitting them with your foot laser-jets. And then the enemies that are unique to the levels that have the helper power-ups are often dealt with simply by using the special ability, without any real trick to it. But I wouldn't call any of this a real complaint about this game...more like things I'd like to see them build on for the next one.

Even in the best marios and sonic games, they tend to have some pretty bad levels (any spring mario level in galaxy, late knuckles levels in the adventure games). Astro bot by being great shows the problem with modern video games. It takes the bloat and says no to it. Short and sweet.

LOVED THE GAME, but can't understand why the dual sense is under utilized in the rest of the games on ps5?
@af4396Ай бұрын
Astro's playroom gives me no sense of the need of a PS5 Pro, at all. Amazing display of physics, material rendering, draw distance, objects on-screen, lighting and all at a highly accomplished 4K/60fps target. However, if you want to brute force your way through Star Wars Outlaws' terrible optimization and bugginess, or a remastered-remastered version The Last of Us Part 2, then the PS5 Pro is for you! Developers won't care to optimize for your new 800 dollar machine (so you can use those disks you bought for the PS5), but you'll feel like you're the gaming king! On a serious note though... Astrobot is abuot as "next gen" as it gets so far, aside from maybe those insane real-time titanic boss fights in FF16.

What Sonic game is John playing where there's "depth" ? Sonic's "momentum system" is broken. Always needing to stop or get hit during those moments moments.. unless you're referring those almost quick time moments when Sonic is speed balling in those chutes.. Momentum is when, if you're good, you can KEEP MOVING. Like in the Donkey Kong Country games. Sonic is the opposite of that. I think he's got his rose colored glasses on.

It just occurred to me that all the bots that you rescue during the game should and maybe will also become collectible shelf figures. There's money to be made there...
@Matty_UKАй бұрын
I said that to Sony when they revealed it. They should have made a collecters edition that came with an Astro Bot figure and his face was an LED screen that did stuff.

I doubt it'll come to PC, but I'm hoping it does
@GemageosАй бұрын
Even if it doesn't come to PC, it might make Microsoft do something with Banjo-Kazooie and other Nintendo64-era Rare IPs. And those WILL be on PC. And Nintendo.

@@Gemageosand they will fuck it up like they did with Banjo Nuts and bolts.

It's a fantastic experience but to me isn't better than Ratchet and Clank. To me Ratchet and Clank in the PS2/PS3 era blended a coherent narrative with the nice 3D platforming and combat which is easy for everyone to play. But yes Astrobot is great

In a week where concord shuts down and astro bot releases as a full featured game with no dlc or microtransactions, bug free and the game is great, if you dont support games like astro bot then you forfeit your right to complain about live service garbage.
@bamban_garcia5562Ай бұрын
Or maybe people prefer to support the genre or style they want and not exactly live service like... I myself are skipping robot platformer because I prefer horror, thus I am looking forward to Lempo, Pneumata, A Quiet Place The Road Ahead, The Bridge Curse 2, Dollhouse Beyond The Broken Mirror among others

This clears shows how Sony understand their gamers better than Xbox. We can argue over which consoles have better performance but if there's no game that highlight those strength it will mean nothing to the gamers. Sorry, had to mention Xbox as I was an Xbox gamers and I like what Sony did with Astro Bot. It's simple in term of gameplay and graphics, but it plays to the strength of the console very well.

Astro Bot is a celebration of gaming and especially PlayStation. It has no divisive politics or preachy messaging. It’s loved by nearly everyone. They put so much detail into all the little character animations.

I hope Nintendo take inspiration from this game for the next mainline Mario game. This is most beautifully rendered platformer I've ever seen. Especially the enormous amount particles/objects on screen and physics. Truly next gen.

This! And I also hope Microsoft does something the Banjo-Kazooie.
