The upper/north village and south village where Dhanush lives denotes the castes. That’s why the villian wanted dhanush’s land and wanted his people ‘s humiliation. They don’t explicitly call out caste but it’s understood. In the flashback , it is more clearly called out. And the burning of people was a true story in the 60s.

Rick - it is not a class differences. But caste differences. People are placed in a pecking order - much like pyramidical structure - by the veda(ancient scriptures) & sanskritized brahminical hinduism. This structure - till date - enables those above to discriminate those below. Strangely, barring brahmins/few upper castes - who are top - rest of the 95% people have people above & below. Even though intermediate castes suffer discrimination on the hands of upper castes, they do the same or worse to those below. So, this move shows how things play out in practice .....due to the hierchial power structures. That is why, oppressed castes were prevented from wearing slippers. Oppressed classes live in thatched mud houses while those above live in more sturdy houses. If oppressed class even mimic those above, those above feel (wrongly feel) like it is insult or lack of respect etc and hurt, discriminate and even kill.

It's not a class thing but a caste thing. Brahmins created a discriminative ideology with them on top of the hierarchy named Manusmriti (Sanatan Dharma) where people are divided into 4 Varnas(colours/castes). Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, Sudhras(lower caste/slaves). From the inception of Sanatana they're practising this.

The movie is based on caste oppression... People will paint a rosy picture but this is the UGLY side of Indian caste oppression... Worst thing is it STILL continues. There are people who are offended that these issues are being made as movies. Its a SICK society. You guys need to understand the hierarchy. The education was kept only to the few (5-10%), they keep all the power, religion and control of the society. The next in the hierarchy (20%) does all the atrocities to the lower caste people. Only EDUCATION has been liberating the people. but the mindset of the most of the people hasnt changed, only few are progressive. The Indians in the US / West most of them are privileged and they oppress the fellow lower caste people, even there. Look past their mask, you will notice it.
