This is exactly the video I was looking for! Thanks! I was getting sick of seeing those "empty" reviews that tell nothing about the devices! Think it would be beneficial to show a little bit on the software side for each option as well as looking in depth to the possibilities that Asus Software has. None the less, Thanks for sharing this as this was very helpfull 😁

Thanks again! I did do another complete speed test, range test review on the other video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/maLGe2mlhZt-r5I The interface is similar to other Asus devices like the Asus GT6 I recently reviewed minus the AURA RGB and Customized Gaming optimizations. I did start going over the interface with my more recent routers. Asus in general has the most options from any router I test

Thankyou. Been searching through many videos and yours shows me exactly what I need to do. Will have router to modem upstairs and then wired backhaul to main floor node. Then, unmanged switch to 2nd node in the basement using wired backhaul. None of the other videos specifically showed plugging into wlan port on each of the 2 nodes for wired backhaul. The other videos also did no show that you could 1st go to an unmanaged switch 1st, prior to the wlan port on the node.

Glad this video is useful. Yup lots of different ways you can connect it, the only important thing is connecting the modem to the router directly via ethernet. After that you have a lot of choices.

I found with my XT8 2 pack, that node placement needs to be optimized in order to minimize interference between the node & router. And that continues to be the dirty little secret of mesh wifi. That said, my XT8 wireless backhaul has been stable & strong. I like this system!
@landpet

In addition to that, think you should also mention some of the following: if you get more than 1Gb internet, via wired backhaul you are restricted to the 1Gb ethernet port (and also that is important to make sure the switch is Gigabit, otherwise you loose performance). Second, if you use wireless backhaul and have more than 1Gb internet, could you reach out to the maximum speeds (theoratically)?. Third, If you use wired backhaul via Gigabit port (and switch if applicable) what would be the maximum internal speed transfer between devices? I am imagining the obvious answer is 1Gigabit, but then it kind of strikes me is that the WAN port of that modem can go upto 2.5 Gigabit.... Isnt that just dumb? shouldnt it have at least a LAN port with 2.5 Gigabit so that you could connect it to a switch without loosing speed? I am also planning to go Wired Backhaul, but makes me sad that I might loose efficiency in my internal network due to the 1Gigabit lan port being connected to the 2,5 Gigabit Wan Port. Thanks!

1. Correct 2. In reality, I've never seen wireless backhaul go faster than gigabit. That may change with WiFi 7 in the future. 3. Correct, You do slow down to gigabit. The only advantage of having a fast WAN port is so your wifi devices can take advantage of it but for the most part I prefer 2 fast ports as you mentioned.

Thanks a lot!! I can get the big picture of it. Question: when u said u can use same ssid n password thus all the gadget connected to previous router can mostly change to this router, how to set it? Did you setup with same ssid n password with old router connected? Or just disconnect the old one from beginning?
@landpet
@landpet 2 жыл бұрын
No problem! Disconnect the old one, replace it with this one and use the same SSID and password. Very important to remember that both the SSID and password are case sensitive. So the SSID and password needs to be an exact match on this new ET8 for it to work.

Great explanation, but I have a question. My modem is in my bedroom closet with ethernet cables going throughout the house. I want to place my ASUS router in the downstairs living room and the node upstairs. I know if I run the two cables separately it won't be a wired backhaul, however, would the node then act like a switch from the modem and still run wireless backhaul from the router? I hope that makes sense. Thank you!
@landpet
@landpet Жыл бұрын
Thanks. not quite should I understand fully. The secondary ASUS needs to connect to the main ASUS router which should be connected to your modem. If you run both Asus routers directly to the modem then it's not going to create a single network assuming your modem is actually a modem router combo. It's not a good idea to do this either way.

Hi, I wonder if I need a 3pack system or if 2 is enough. I live in a 2 floor house with the router placed in the 1st floor. Computers are in the 2nd floor and can't connect to the router via wifi. If I replace my router with a mesh router and put the 2nd device (satellite/node) where the computers are, will the node detect the mesh wifi when currently the computers dont recognize the regular wifi? Or should I place a 2nd node in between both devices, maybe on the stairs between both floors? Thanks

When you discuss wireless backhaul, you didn’t mention that the et8s use the 6ghz spectrum only for that wireless backhaul, and that wifi 6 is full duplex, meaning devices can send and receive at the same time. As a result, speeds should NOT be impacted because only that 6ghz band is being utilized, and so the other bands that 99% of devices connect to aren’t going to be affected.

I can't really find any documentation on it but can you add another wifi node to this setup of another brand. I need a indoor/outdoor node to handle some dead spots for home coverage and was thinking of a ubiquiti outdoor wifi node. I will eventually upgrade to a full system but until then I was hoping to continue to use this Asus with that one node.

I'm personally not a fan of doing that. I like to stick with the same system. Since this is an ASUS, you can just connect just about any other ASUS so as long as it supports AiMesh.

@landpet
@landpet Жыл бұрын
I recommend getting the same model but just as a heads up, any ASUS that supports AiMesh should work fine with this. I just don't think the speeds will be great across wireless backhaul for other units since this thing has a 6GHz band as well, so I think ET8 is the best way to go, unfortunately, it's not the cheapest way.

Thank you for teh detailed vedio, after your recommendation i did get an ET8...excellent device, worth the money spent. Couple of queries though, 1, Using Wireless backhaul , would the router be using the 6ghz (6E) part exclusively for backhauling?, 2, if using wired backhaul anything more than cat 6 be an overkill, since the device supports a max of 2.5ghz?
@landpet
@landpet 2 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! 1. I believe it does use the 6GHz as the backhaul, it's not exclusively for backhauling, you could still use it to connect via wifi 6E devices (which not many exist as of now). 2. Cat6 can support 10Gb but if you're wiring from scratch, I would use Cat7 since there's not much of a price difference. Cat7 allows a farther distance with 10Gb than cat6 does. Here's one link that talks about them: baileysystems.net/blog/cat6-vs-cat7-vs-cat8-cable-whats-the-difference/

@landpet 2 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear it. If you have a modem/router combo, you usually access the modem by going to a specific IP address or some link that is "usually" written on a sticker on your modem. Then when you access the settings, it's typically an option that says disable router or enable bridge mode (which disables the router portion). You can also contact your ISP and ask them how to do it. If you don't do this, you can leave it alone and use the ASUS ET8 as an access point which you will find in the Asus app however I don't recommend going this route. It's best to use this as your main router for max performance gains.

lol, it's fine, feel free to ask but I can't remember what the blue light is for. I have too many router/mesh wifi's to remember something that specific lol. I do remember white means it's working. Maybe it's in the searching mode when you're turning it on, maybe that's what the blue light means but if it continues to do that then I would move it closer and if it still continues, I would do a factory reset on that node and add it again.

You can use a less expensive model like the XD4 however the speeds will suffer much more compared to connecting another ET8. ET8 uses the 6GHz to achieve a faster wireless backhaul, it would need to use the 5GHz or 2.4GHz to connect which should work but speeds will suffer.

To run it in access point mode, you need to have another router as the main router. Then you would connect one of the ET8's to the non Asus router, you have to explicitly set that option to run an access point mode you will see the option both in the ASUS router app and through the browser link. Then you can add another ET8 by connecting it to the main et8. Just as a heads up though if your other router is in ASUS router you don't need to run this in access point mode you can just add it as part of the AI mesh system

One of them is downstairs, won't have a connected ET8, the other one, upstairs, will have a connected ET8 I would like both ET8s connected via wired and wireless My router is downstairs, so I basically have two coax connections downstairs. It is currently connected to an AC-RT87U, which apparently does not support AIMESH. How should I approach connecting my two ET8 devices? Should I disconnect my AR-RT87U before I proceed then connect the ET8?? It seems to not do anything unless I connect an ET8 through a WAN port, and I've never had any router/device connected there, usually it's just the LAN port.

If I’m doing wireless backhaul on the node in my bedroom should I when using the Ethernet to hook up my Apple 4k box to the node if I have the Ethernet Hooked from the wan to the Apple box is that fine of should I use the lan port like you said or does it not matter. Also if my main router is behind a 75” tv I’m assuming it will hurt the speed how much do you think it would slow the router down. The numbers in my room are not so great paying for up to 600mbps but getting 450mbps top most under 300mbps the same numbers I was getting from my old Asus ac1900 I can’t figure out why. I also live in an apartment it’s running good so far. Just wondering if theirs anything I can to to improve the numbers thanks.

The simple answer is to do wired backhaul, in that case you will get the full speeds. However I do realize that's not always possible. With wireless backhaul, it's convenient with some sacrifice to the speeds. I can't say how much speed you will lose by placing it behind a TV but it will be some. The more open the place, the better it will perform. Your walls will also make a difference. You can hook up the apple tv either via Ethernet or wireless, it will probably get a bit better over Ethernet so might as well leave it like that. With wireless backhaul, it's best to leave both ET8 devices in open places as much as possible to maximize the speeds.

@landpet
@landpet 2 жыл бұрын
If it's not in access point mode, then I'm assuming you have 2 different wifi SSIDs? Here's what I would try, set your xfinity modem/router combo to bridge mode so it disable it's wireless portion. Then connect that to your Asus which will become your main router. The second ASUS 35ft sounds fine to me unless there's some thick walls, then you could bring it a bit closer. Your iPhone in theory should be getting better than 350. if not, what you can also do, is bring the secondary Asus closer temporarily and try that out to see if the speeds improved. Also before you try that, verify your iPhone is connected to the secondary Asus or just turn off the wifi on your iPhone and turn it back on near the secondary ASUS which it will most likely connect to that secondary one then you can retry the speed test. The eero is another good mesh wifi but from the tests I've done, the ASUS gets better wireless backhaul speeds compared to the eero. Hope this helps!

Try restarting it and your modem. Unless you tinkered with some settings, you can try a factory reset which will erase all your settings and try it that way. If not, you probably have a defective unit

Second room 35ft away 2nd asus router or node wireless from the main asus router then Ethernet to Apple 4k box . Xfinity router runs smart items around 12 of them. The speed test from the router app says over 600mbps which sounds right but from my iPhone 12 Pro Max speed test says 350 or so but I not saying it isn’t good 98% of the time it’s fine just here and there especially on the fire stick it buffers and really shouldn’t with the Wi-Fi I have unless living in a condo means don’t expect perfection. If I do get something else it might be the 3 pack eero pro.

However, I get slightly faster speeds when in the basement when doing Speedtest on my phone than I do upstairs next to router 1. Any idea why the secondary router would be producing faster speeds than the main router?

Hello Sir! I live in Denmark/EU - we have just had 6E approved - but it is impossible to find the ET8 (or any other 6E capable system) anywhere. I might have to end up importing a set from the US 😊 Do you know of anywhere in the EU where the ET8 is available for sale?

Hi is there a way to connect both 2.5 ports to a 2.5gbps switch in order to have a real wired backhaul with the same speed in both nodes?
@landpet
@landpet 2 жыл бұрын
Not from what I know. This only has one 2.5Gbps port which needs to be connected to the modem leaving gigabit for the remaining connections, even if you connect the secondary router acting as a node to the 2.5Gbps the source is still coming from a Gigabit. The only mesh I've tested that has this capability is the Netgear Orbi RBKE963 which has a 10Gbps WAN with a 2.5Gbps secondary port that can be used for wired backhaul.
@Isvelify
@Isvelify 2 жыл бұрын
@@landpet thank you for your answer, may be have both routers connected to a switch of 2.5gbps with static IP address with the modem as a gateway, and the modem with DHCP disabled, who knows, but Asus firmware probably won't support that.... I think I will buy this mesh, probable the best price for all of those features, thank you for the video.
@landpet

@@Isvelify No worries, yeah I don't think that will work with this. Easiest thing is to buy a mesh with two fast ports if that's what you're trying to achieve but I will definitely say this is a very good mesh for the price.

@@landpet Is it possible to do this with the Asus Dual Wan feature? Looks like this router supports Dual Wan per the Asus website. Essentially you enable dual wan, set primary WAN to ethernet LAN and secondary WAN to usb. This will move the WAN port to one of the gigabit ports. Not sure if it opens up the WAN to be used as a backhaul though. I got a really good deal on this system as an Amazon warehouse buy. I'll try it and report back later this week to see if it works. Would like a gigabit WAN and a 2.5 GB connection to a 2.5 G switch. Then I want to connect the other ET8 to the switch over 2.5G. It's a lot of what ifs, but it's worth a shot! Thanks for the awesome content!

Greetings, thank you for such a great breakdown. I just sent back my Eero pro 6's wifi mesh and bought the ASUS ax6600 ET8, I'm having issues bridging my Xfinity XB7 gateway (white with 1.2 internet speed), the xb7 modem/router will NOT bridge properly with the ASUS. the ASUS zenwifi mesh drops all signal once I put xfi on bridge mode. Once I take off the bridge mode on xfi then the ASUS works but I if I leave it my wifi signal keeps dropping; which I believe the problem is the 2 routers crossing paths competing each other ( I think, I'm new to all this networking). Is anyone experiencing this problem? Any advise, I'd greatly appreciate it.
@landpet
@landpet 2 жыл бұрын
If you put your xfinity router to bridge mode, you just need to setup the Asus in router mode and set the SSID and it should work. If you leave the xfinity router enabled then you can run your Asus in access point mode. It’s a hidden option in the app.

Ignored most important element -- how to transition for existing WIFI router to new ASUS routers -- how to keep same names, passwords, etc. Anyone can "plug and play" but not so easy to move from Old Router to New Router transitioning home cameras, SmartThings, Hue lighting etc. to new Router config -- missed opportunity to differentiate your channel.
