You know you can burn / break parts of the motherboard if you allow the fans spin freely with that canned air. They are spinning a lot faster than 100 % RPM would normally be.

thanks for the guide, the computer is working smoothly at a solid 60-70 degrees for my games now. Interesting thing is, ive had the computer for over a year, this is the first time taking it apart, and the gpu had the smallest amount of paste on it. Approx. 5 mm squared of the gpu was covered on only one corner, no wonder it kept heating up to 90+ degrees when playing games before. The guide was much appreciated, thanks again!

Great video Bob! Did my gx701 using this video as a semi guide as the disassembly is similar. Went ahead and did liquid metal and also used k5 pro! Dropped about 24c on the core! Anyways, I see/assume you you were using the icicle stick provided with the k5 pro. Way back when, when I did my triton 500, I encounted a small container version of it and a sort of lipstick looking one. Decided to get both. Anyways for some reason I feel the properties differ between the each type after applying them on several different builds. Have you encountered this? Do they both perform the same?

Hiya. Followed your guide and all worked really well. One thing though, you can pull the paper back on the display cable side and tease the cable out of the channel in there and it means you don't need to remove the cable when extracting the cooler/fan assembly. I used the new MX-6 formulation and my temps before were at idle about 42 to 45 on the cpu and at load 70+ on the CPU and 76 on the GPU. Now, at idle with MX6 my temps are 32 to 36 on the CPU and at load approx 50 to 60 on the CPU and 65 to 70 on the GPU with it at full speed, no throttle. Very impressed.

Thank you, Bob! I just changed the thermal paste for my G14 2020 after more than 2 years of continuous use, at least 8 hours a day. I used Grizzly Kryonaut for CPU and GPU, MX-4 for VRMs. Before repasting, the temperature is usually 65 - 75 degrees Celsius and now it's 50 - 60. The lowest I could get is 37 degrees Celsius when idle (Turbo, process power limited to 80%). My 2 years old laptop is now even cooler than when I first bought it. 😳
@BobOfAllTrades
@BobOfAllTrades Жыл бұрын
Looks like you did great! MX-4 may not be ideal for the VRMs but I can’t confirm with personal experience. I gathered that pastes like K5 Pro is preferred since it’s for that type of part. Unfortunately, it’s not something you can identify whether it’ll be a problem since those parts tend to lack sensors you can monitor with software.

I followed your steps and successfully re pasted my laptop. I used Arctic MX-4 for the APU and GPU and I used K5 pro for the vrms and vram modules. I also replaced the metal lid because it was dented. I had to transfer the LCD, plastic bezel and hinges from the first lid to the replacement lid. I then reassembled the laptop and it worked perfectly. My idle temp went from 60 to 32 degrees Celsius and my gaming temp went from 92 to 52 degrees Celsius. Big improvement! Hi Bob of All Trades! Thank you so much for this upload :) I own a MSI GE75 Raider and did a repaste a few months ago using Noctua NT-H2 (hope you approve lol) and while I had the cooler off I noticed that MSI placed the same white paste in certain areas while having pink thermal pads on a few other areas. My inquiry is would it be okay to remove the thermal pads and place the K5 Pro in its place? I don't know the thickness used by MSI and that's my only concern with putting new pads on. I plan on doing another repaste since I wasn't sure what the K5 Pro was at the time and didn't clean it off and put new one on. Thank you!

Just completed this on my own 2020 G14 and the results are quite nice! Idle I was sitting near 50°C on CPU on idle! And 80-85°C raiding in FFXIV. So far, idle is down to 40-45°C and in-game FFXIV (idle in a major town with a lot of players) was at 62°C, so I'm sure raiding will be far easier. Not bad for what was already a heater when I first bought it. The paste was so flakey, so even the cheapie Corsiar TM-30 was a huge upgrade. I'll probably repaste with KPx later on once I have can get an order in.

Thanks! But what about the fan exhausts? The dust tends to pile up in this areas in laptops, so it is often insufficient to clean the fans themselves from the dust; you also extract the "dust brick" from the exhaust. Asus advertise their fans as "self-cleaning", but i have a suspicion there's a sheer amount of marketing in this claim. Can this be a problem? An aspiring G14 owner (at least hope for that).

I’m having a major problem, the metal clip that holds the battery cable can’t get shut back over when I reattach the battery cable. The clip didn’t come off like it did for your example, it just slid back a bit, but now when I reattach the cable, I can’t get metal clip to latch back over it. Can you please tell me why? I see tiny little sparking when I reattach the cable

Great video. I've ruined my fans by using a mattress foot pump to clean them and this guide is very thorough regarding the "how". Any guidance (anyone) on how to apply the paste and how much? I haven't done that in at least 18 years.

Repasted and replaced the fans - all thanks to this guide. There's a noticeable difference in temperature - I'm using Atrofac to turn the fans off completely below 80°C, and previously when browsing Street View they would eventually start spinning. With the new paste - nothing. The CPU simply never reaches this temperature.

That sold after the review. Many reporting temps like yours have the 2070 version. That runs much hotter. Are you maxing out your fans? Are your fans clean? Is this the 1660ti or 2070 version? How long have you had it?
@anibalhuneeus

@@BobOfAllTrades its the 2070 Max Q version, this was bought in January and I'ved always had these temperatures so dust is not an option after barely 2 months. @@anibalhuneeus LM can be spectacular. It if you’re not maxing out fan speed then expect the fan speed to scale to temps making thermal paste upgrades less effective. It’s going to come down to the components, the application quality (this is typical not the issue) the chassis’s airflow capabilities and user settings.

@@BobOfAllTrades thanks for the comments. If that's the case then I think it's not worth the hassle. I am running the PC in the turbo mode from the armory crate software, I will try with turbo with fans maxed out and see if this improves a couple of degrees (though at turbo I would assume it's already kind of maxing as it gets super loud haha like 55 dB). For the thermal paste on the VRMs, is it possible or viable to use Kryonaut Extreme?
@one_step_sideways
@one_step_sideways 2 жыл бұрын
You can use it, but why? It's going to be more expensive. Just a regular thick paste (not too liquid because you don't want the paste to be pumped out) that's cheap will do the trick. You just need to establish a contact of the heatsink with the VRMs and memory chips.

Fantastic. I also repasted my Vivobook S14 ultrabook two weeks after buying one and installed a thermal pad to further spread out the heat from the heatsink to my metal back plate. Most ultrabooks have no warranty stickers on their cooling system because it's simplistic and isn't tied to the display cable or anything else important like in this laptop, which is great. 75C at 25W TDP on prolonged loads and my fan is barely spinning. (if the ambient temperature gets higher it would spin faster but that isn't exactly appreciated in an ultrabook that isn't a gaming laptop, is it?)
@christhomas2729

@@one_step_sideways Well it is good to perform a repaste. An ultrabook takes way less power than a gaming laptop that has a full dedicated gpu than a gaming laptop with a dedicated mobile gpu.

I don't know which one would be a greater risk: dropping something on the mobo and fry it or try disconnecting the battery and... fry the damn thing. Neither of these happened, but it needed a well magnetised screwdriver with the right size/profile. Lid LED and fan connectors are indeed super flimsy, but manageable with care. Maybe the most time consuming part was getting rid of the old paste from the VRM parts one by one, some still ended up between them anyway, a toothbrush and some IPA would make it nice and tidy but maybe next time. CPU fan worn out in 3 years' time so it's not that far ahead, these paper thin bearings can't take much abuse for sure. (vs. Da Brick T440p :D )
