Such a good review. I continue to be impressed by this channel's thoroughness and accuracy. I bought the original z35 predator ultrawide in 2016 before I knew the fine details on monitor specs, and was heavily disappointed in the black level smearing. Thanks to reviews like this channel's, I never have to worry about buying a monitor again, and that is something I definitely do not take for granted. Thanks guys as always. Cheers!

It was cruel how badly Acer misrepresented their early ultrawide monitors. I actually felt motion sickness any time I used my supposed 200hz display. It wasn't until a year later I learned why my old 60hz TN was less blurry and felt faster.

If you're going to make a comment like that, you should really provide channels or sites that you feel are better. One, if you're correct, most of us would probably be interested in their content. And two, without anything to back up your statement, you can come across as a troll. I'm not saying you are, but without anything backing up your comment, it can look that way. I would love to check out some other reviewers for monitors as there aren't that many that go into the depth that HU does. The industry's refresh rate goal is 1000 Hz (1 ms per refresh). There's always room for improvement as long as the UFO in motion @ 5:30 doesn't look as sharp as the reference image.
@BrianCairns4 жыл бұрын
Right, I think most people miss that high refresh isn't just about smooth motion, it's also about latency and motion clarity. I game on a 1440p 165Hz G-Sync IPS monitor, and I'm personally not willing to give up resolution for better motion clarity. But I can absolutely tell the difference with backlight strobing (ULMB) turned on. Backlight strobing is one way to get more motion clarity, but it has downsides including reduced brightness, crosstalk and (for some people) perceived flickering. It also does nothing to reduce latency. With higher refresh rates, you get to have your cake and eat it too. The only challenge is that we need increasingly more compute power on both the CPU and GPU to drive ever higher framerates. I would personally love to see a true black frame insertion feature done at the GPU level. Let me keep adaptive sync on, but cap the framerate to 1/2 the display refresh rate and insert a black frame. That would be perfect on a 360Hz monitor for games where you can't hit 180Hz (which is most non-competitive titles) since you would get the benefit of better motion clarity and adaptive sync, without the need for the monitor to support backlight strobing and variable refresh at the same time (which is challenging).
@BetaCuckAlpha4 жыл бұрын
@@BrianCairns But without gsync the monitor wouldn't know when to insert the black frame, and it wouldn't be anything like strobing, it would just be torn black frames. Backlight strobing is not removing a frame from existence, it's just turning off the light between frames.
@paulelderson9344 жыл бұрын
Watching 1000 Hz displays will cause headaches and nausea. It's not natural to keep seeing a clear image of a very fast moving object and your brain will react to that. The exact refresh rate that the in-motion UFO matches the reference image is the point where the nausea and headaches will start.
@rtyzxc4 жыл бұрын
@@paulelderson934 That's not how it works. Real life is shown in infinite fps and the faster a monitor can get to that the better it is. Eye-tracking motion blur doesn't exist in real life. A real object tracked by eye or pursuit camera stays equally clear regardless of the speed it's moving at as long as you are able to track it. Monitors fail at displaying a moving object accurately due to still frames smearing on your retina. Lower persistence achieved by faster refresh rate or by strobing will make eye-tracked motion clearer, provided the flicker is fast enough for you to not notice it. Peripheral vision motion blur is realistic and happens when NOT tracking an object. For peripheral vision motion blur too, higher refresh rate will make it more realistic by eliminating steps between frames. Backlight strobing doesn't do anything for that.
@Jason7771234 жыл бұрын
Kind of sad that LCD monitors need to be 1000hz to achieve perfect motion clarity, when 60hz CRT monitors already have perfect motion clarity and no blur. Personally, I'm hoping for a better display technology to come along before it comes to that, because the thought of having to run games at 1000fps sounds like a nightmare.

Amazing review as always BUT I couldn't help but notice a lack of BenQ in all of the charts. Isn't the BenQ XL2546S (the updated version of the XL2546) considered king of 240 Hz as far as I know? Sounds like something that would be very useful being on those charts. Also, what about ULMB vs DyAc? To this day, I have never seen any decent reviewer or channel like yours compare them properly. Especially now, with these new monitors coming out, I STILL don't know what's the best high refresh rate monitor. Is it a 240 BenQ with DyAc or a 360 Hz Asus without DyAc? And what if you can't actually reach 360 fps, e.g. Warzone at 200 fps, do you get 240 or is there still benefit from 360? Maybe that sweet response time? Or maybe that 360 Hz monitor is better able to do backlight strobing at 240 Hz with less strobe crosstalk because that refresh rate is further away from its max limit?

With overdrive set to the correct setting playing rainbow six siege at 280hz capped at 277fps with gsync on is the best monitor experience I have ever had. However 240hz to 280hz is fairly irrelevant and I cant see 360hz being a big upgrade either. Thank you for showing what backlight strobing looks like at 144hz. For those who don't know because of how monitors work backlight strobing at max refresh rate has too much strobe crosstalk. Not sure why that is. It's best to use 120hz strobing or less on a 240hz monitor and with a 360hz monitor 144hz and maybe 180hz looks great now. 240hz strobing is still disappointing but 480hz monitors should do it well when they come out. I wonder what Blur Busters could have achieved if they had tuned it. It's a huge missed opportunity. Blur Busters approval would make me buy this monitor instantly. It would've been nice if you had measured color accuracy when strobing. Apparently a lot of monitors lose a bit of gamut coverage and accuracy which Blur Busters fixed in their Blur Busters Approved program.

If someone could make a 4k, 144hz, HDR 1000 monitor with good response times, colors and contrast for sub £1K, they would be flying off the shelves. will anyone actually be able to see that difference? honest question 🤔 i myself am a 34" 1440p curved monitor sucker. fps is less important to me than those factors. 75-100, fine with that. cant go back to smaller and flat, no matter the fps
@Jbeasty19904 жыл бұрын
I'd most want to have 360hz for multiplayer shooters I play. Even on the lowest possible settings, with high end hardware, I wouldn't come close to sustaining 360 fps. So many games are just not optimized for that, especially multiplayer ones.

120Hz is enough for non-pro gamers
@sergeidart4 жыл бұрын
A few years ago a non-pro gamers will said that 60hz is enough. And pro aims to 120/240. So, higher is better. Core difference is price and performance. Non-pro just don't want to pay more, when pro need top-notch.
@timytimeerased4 жыл бұрын
120 Hz is enough for pro gamers too. Marketing lol. In 2 years, we'll see the comments "oh 240 Hz is alright for casual gaming but... you need higher for pro gaming"
@sergeidart4 жыл бұрын
I guess we will not see this. 120 fps gaming is real, but even in competitive gaming we hardly push though 360 fps. So, it will be rock that hard to break.

I just got an OLED laptop and while it’s “only” 60hz, the basically immediate response time makes it look better in someways than a 240hz+ high refresh IPS. There’s basically no ghosting and the contrast is insane.

Oled and old crts are best for repsonse time and cintrast but be careful with oled, burn-in is a real issue
@bushgreen2604 жыл бұрын
*Why don't they make an oled 240hz or 360hz monitors? I thought oled have instance response times.*
@TheWeirdPianist4 жыл бұрын
Because they don't make OLED monitors and for TVs you don't need more than 120hz. Once we see OLED and microLED monitors we might even see 1000hz.
@bushgreen2604 жыл бұрын
@@TheWeirdPianist but oled is an established technology so why are they not making high refresh displays with it.
@TheWeirdPianist4 жыл бұрын
@@bushgreen260 A lot of people wouldn't buy them because of burn-in risk. It seems like they finally decided to make monitors. According to rumors there are 27 and 32 inch OLED monitors coming in 2022 or 2023 with 8k screens. 8k is too much but they might make lower resolution higher refresh rate displays.

On 5:40, using a fixed shutter equal for every monitor is not enough to show the diference in response time of all types of monitor. Here, clearly is your camera the limiting factor for those images of flying saucers. You need a faster shutter camera. Much faster.

Constructive comment for would be buyers: I have both the PG258Q (240Hz TN version of this monitor) and the 34WK95U (5K ultrawide 60Hz). The 34WK95U is on my desk 100% of the time despite it's 60HZ refresh rate. The resolution, field of view and image quality are just such massive improvements over the 240Hz TN panel that it is not worth even putting on my desk. The PG258Q currently sits in another room collecting dust. I do not do creative work flow, so the screen real estate is not too big of a deal breaker for me. The reason this monitor never moves from my desk is because the refresh rate never made any appreciable difference to my game play. Even in titles like CS:GO, the difference is negligible to the over all experience. 99% of the time, if I miss a shot it is because of internet latency and not because I didn't get enough frames displayed to my eye balls. Add on top of that most games are not twitch shooters and the 34WK95U became the clear winner. I'm not saying there isn't a use case for high refresh rate monitors. But you would have to be gaming specifically for twitch FPS and playing on dedicated LAN servers because as soon as you put the latency of the internet between you and your opponent, no amount of refresh rate will save you.
