I recently discovered this channel about a week ago and I am amazed by the level of details in which these reviews go over. Definitely in-depth that goes beyond the "BUZZ WORDS" of "300hz" "FAST" etc etc. Thank you so much for providing such an informative view on these products and spending the time to do all this testing!!! Cannot say thank you enough. I hope you get to do more of these reviews with future monitor displays.

Once again another amazing monitor review. I used your VG27AQ video to make my purchase of that monitor, and I agree the elmb sync isn't what it should be but besides that I'm really happy with it, I just continue to use my CRT when I want that motion clarity and black levels in certain games.

Dude, your reviews are underrated. They are better to decide on important factors for gaming than those reviews from hardwareunboxed or pc monitors, which are already good. Your work is so helpful, paying not only attention to coating, colorrepresentation etc., but also to the most important aspect for gaming: motionclarity. In this aspect having not only response-times, motionblur on different refreshrates, but also backlightstrobing at different refreshrates, including ELMB-Sync, is fantastic. We need more of this and you need a lot more subs! Edit - Regarding the topic: I dont know the technical limitations Asus has to overcome, but not being able to adjust overdrive during ELMB is absolutely gooney, preventing this from being a good start into having adaptive sync-tech as well as motionblur reduction at the same time. At least I would have bought the monitor with that options.
@ApertureGrille
@ApertureGrille 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm really hoping that with the USB service port on the back of these that ASUS can give us some kind of firmware update. If enough bigger channels complain about it, I think ASUS might seriously consider it. Tim at HUB mentioned that ASUS had sent him a review sample of the VG279QM, so hopefully he'll point it out.

@@ApertureGrille That is interessting to hear, even though it would make my momentary choices even harder: - Viewsonic XG270 - Zowie XL2746s - Viewsonic XG270QG Actually im fine with 144hz, i just want the impossible cake - Good image and motion. So i thought it is better to go for a good motionblurreduction at 144hz rather than going for even higher Refreshrates. Hearing that the XG270 has better backlightstrobing than XG270QG, cause it is adjusted by blurbusters and offers more refreshrate headroom, which is allegedly important for good backlightstrobing is kinda silly. In my country the XG270QG costs 300€ more. but 270qg seems to have better imagequality and 1440p, dont know how important that is too me. If XG270 is barely better than a TN panel, then i could also go for Zowie XL2746s, which seems to have decent blur reduction. IF the Asus comes into that calculation again, it will get even harder :X

TN isn't a bad thing as long as it's not dirt cheap TN (which is 6-bit+frc most of the time & a sad excuse for a monitor, but IPS has some of those as well, including at my work place, they look awful compared to my TN).

What an amazing review of a monitor! I've frankly never seen a more in depth video review of a monitor before. I have tried out most of the new fast ips panels and I have to say, you should really do a review on the Acer Predator XB253Q GX. It and alongside it, the Acer Nitro XV253QX are by far the best gaming monitors in terms of input lag. I've never felt such snappiness before. Unfortunately the former only strobes at 120Hz but it is a proper MBR implementation! If your chasing that CRT goodness, I highly recommend you give it a shot!

@ApertureGrille
@ApertureGrille 4 жыл бұрын
I usually prefer bigger monitors, so the lower PPI of the ASUS doesn't bother me. I use different methodology than HUB, but I think the new AU Optronics panels used in both the 27" and 25" variants should perform similarly. But I'd love to test both! And one benefit of the ASUS for me (either the VG279QM or VG259QM) is the additional 40 Hz. Since I play a lot of Quake Live, which has a 250 FPS limit, the extra framerate overhead allows me to stay in the variable refresh range.

@@ApertureGrille actually i bought both to compare and idk why but: Vg259qm - has much more visible halos on 80 Overdrive at Ufo test. Vg279qm - has less visible halos on 80OD at ufo test. Its like having 60 od on 25 inch version. 27 inch ver has worse elmb vs 25 inch ver. 25 inch had better white color when 27 inch had yellowish white even after trying a lot of calobrations.

@@sebash6 Thanks for the report. How specifically was the ELMB better on the 25" version? As for the white, I may have just been lucky to get a panel with very good uniformity, and you perhaps got unlucky. I wish that weren't the case when buying monitors.

The best and most through testing/review of a monitor I have seen to date on KZbin. Also loved your video on input lag! Do you have plans to test the AOC 24G2? It is a 144Hz 1080p IPS monitor which has recieved great response from other reviewers. I'm guessing it is going to be popular. Also do you have a Patreon where you can be supported? Would love to see more tests at level of detail but I understand that getting products can be costly. Thanks again, a5hun, for the great work.

Fantastic video! And great pursuit tests, as well as some excellent observations about strobing. However, one major correction: TestUFO already supports VRR (AdaptiveSync / G-SYNC) in internal tests. The problem is Chome/FireFox doesn't support TestUFO VRR, it only plays TestUFO at max-Hz. There are many people toiling away on improving HTML standards that I want to thank them for. There is a VRR implementation of TestUFO coming later this year. It's best to say that "The current web standards does not yet allow VRR, though the web standards groups are working on that" to accurately explain TestUFO VRR limitation. Your custom VRR pursuit camera app correctly uses the Blur Busters pursuit camera sync-track invention! 👍

Should perform fairly the same. I've had similar experience with the Acer Predator 25" and 27" panels. The only outlier is the Acer Nitro XV253QX which is slightly different. My friend bought the 25" version and is quite happy with it. I checked for backlight bleed and ips glow and surprisingly it was astonishingly good just like in this panel being reviewed. TLDR: If your happy with this review, go get the 25" panel ;) Thank me later! Thanks! They use slightly different panels, and I've heard the 25" model is slightly more prone to temporary image retention, but they should both perform roughly the same. I'm not a big fan of small screens... the bigger, the better. But neither version will look amazing compared to a QHD screen. The VG279QM is still my favorite 240+ Hz FHD screen, but for most people, and for me personally, I'd opt for a 27" QHD screen. The monitor I'm using right now is the Lenovo Y27q-20, which uses the same panel that's in LG's 27GL850, and it's a fantastic monitor.

I've been looking for a CRT like monitor for a long time. Seems like the ASUS VG279QM or the Viewsonic XG270 could be what i'm looking for but not sure. Since you say the ELMB sync isn't that great or useful I'm very interested to know about the XG270 motion blur option and if that monitor is worth it. As of right now which IPS monitor do you think is the best for a game like Quake Live? Does Quake benefit from 280 hz and more or not really since the maxfps is 250 and 240 hz is enough?

Hey nice video! I've been wanting to ask you a couple questions since you uploaded this review, but I didn't really know how to put them so I dont sound too noobish lol but anyway: 1- First question is simple: If the input lag is high at a fixed 60 hz, why not use the monitor at a fixed 240 hz (since it's a multiple) with a console ? Is it not compatible? 2- I like your CADs technique to evaluate the perfomance of a monitor . I assume the way you see it is the less the CAD number the better since that's the way CRT's behave (instant very bright flash), but in a sample and hold way of displaying the image, is it the closest to zero the better? Wouldn't this cause a strong stroboscopic effect at low hz? Wouldn't it be better to have a reference (hypotethical perfect sample and hold response) CAD like for example a curve (or a triangle for simplicity) that converges to the end point within the frame window time or something like that idk? Anyway keep up the great work!
@ApertureGrille
@ApertureGrille 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry the delayed reply! I actually don't have any modern consoles (!), so I'm not familiar with how they behave when connected to high refresh displays. If they can do adaptive-sync at 240 or 280 Hz, that'd be much better for input lag. But what about something like a Switch? You're correct about CAD: I accumulate the difference of the LCD transition compared to a "perfect" square wave transition: instantaneous OFF to ON (or vice versa), and so lower is "better." I put up an illustration here: www.aperturegrille.com/about/Images/RT-About-New.png But about that "better." I like your idea of using a linear response from low to high over the duration of the frame as the reference. At typical television framerates (24, 30), instantaneous transitions like OLED can look jarring from frame to frame, but low framerate content will never look great in motion. Even on slow VA televisions, 24 FPS content is both juddery and smeary. But the biggest problem I see is the average brightness level. Imagine a moving star field (or really just any moving white to black transition). If we used a linear ramp from black to white for each frame, the average brightness would be right in the middle: 50% gray, not white. You can see what that looks like in my BenQ GW2760HS video where I show a star map (and Skyrim!) on a VA panel dimming: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqfcn6yoerhqf7M If you could take an OLED and "shape" its response to be linear rather than a square-wave wall, that type of dimming would also occur. Non-strobed displays will always have sample-and-hold blur, but we really do want their transitions to happen as fast as possible, so that's why I use a square wave as the reference. Fantastic questions! I'm really excited when people ask about this sort of stuff! I wish I'd seen this sooner! Sorry!

Great detailed review!! One question: so when playing games like cs:go at 280 fps+ would you recommend turning on ulmb and gsync, as it has good performance at those constant framerates if I understood correctly?
@ApertureGrille
@ApertureGrille 4 жыл бұрын
If you're getting more than 280 FPS, you might not need to worry about ELMB or ELMB-Sync. At especially high framerates, just turn overdrive to 80, and you should be fine. Quake Live, as I was showing in the video, is capped at 250 FPS, so I need to use adaptive-sync to minimize input lag, but I'd typically prefer to run some sort of strobing mode. Once you get yours in, let us know which you prefer. When I do these videos, I'm never quite sure what to recommend, because I'm a super picky CRT user :)

Great review, I have a question maybe you could help me, I bought a pair of gaming glasses (gunnar), and they worked perfectly with my tv and my laptop, but with this monitor asusvg279qm they can't focus, I tried them on my previous 144hz screen and they worked we'll. When viewing on the Asus vg279qm is like watching a 3d movie without the 3d glasses. Thanks and please continue with these amazing reviews

a5hun. The detail you've into is out of this world (even though I don't understand it all) I've got this monitor coming in about ten days and as I'm just your average console gaming jo I'm wondering what settings YOU would recommend for Xbox gaming on games like call of duty, battlefield, and FIFA 21. I've got the Xbox one X now but really got the monitor for the upcoming Xbox series X. Response time is what I'm after with the best possible picture. So if you could recommend what settings you think I should us I'd greatly appreciate it. And thank you.

@@ApertureGrille it’s a very good monitor. However as very disappointed when I learned you can’t use adaptive sync when you overclock the monitor tho so I can’t use that feature when playing games where you can’t hold 280 frames. Have to use its native 240hz.

@@ApertureGrille yes. I’ve had this monitor for almost a year. However when I overclock it to 280hz, it locks the refresh rate at 280, even tho the VRR is on (adaptive sync). Soon as I disable the overclock, (back to 240) the adaptive sync works again.

Wow, this is the best review I have seen of the VG279QM! Good work. Question : Does enabling EMLB Sync while in 280 hz mode negatively effect the input lag or grey to grey pixel response times?
@ApertureGrille
@ApertureGrille 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I didn't test that specifically, but strobing modes generally have a small delay to wait for the pixels to change color before flashing the backlight, perhaps 2 ms. I didn't notice any lag when using ELMB-Sync, though. As for pixel response times, ASUS locks the overdrive setting to 80 while in ELMB modes, so the performance is quite good at higher refresh rates, but the overshoot does become a problem as the framerate drops. The biggest problem with ELMB-Sync is the Devil's Horns type double strobe. It really hurts visual clarity compared with traditional single-strobe modes.

Hi great video! I always had 24 inch monitors and this one caught my eye but what I have noticed in most 27 inch monitors is pixelation and for me that is a big deal and unless is a 1440p monitor I have a real hard time at choosing 27 inches so what I wanted to ask is if this 27 inch ips is good at that? I dont know a lot about monitors but I dont like big monitors that look like the resolution is stretcht and english is not my main language so I dont know If I was able to explain my self

i found your channel thanks to blur buster forum and MAAAN! your reviews are the best! I have a question for you... have you noticed high input lag at 75-100hz too? or just at 60hz?
@ApertureGrille
@ApertureGrille 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I just checked to make sure, but when using the control panel to set the VG279QM to 60 Hz or 85 Hz, the lag is really easy to feel. At 100 Hz, it's still noticeable, but it gets better from there on up. But that only applies when using the control panel to limit the framerate while using DisplayPort. In normal adaptive-sync operation, input lag is minimal throughout the range. I haven't checked with HDMI, but that would only be a problem when using consoles that run at 60 Hz. For PC use, you should always let adaptive-sync displays run at their highest refresh rate.
