Here is my first update on my experience with the Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 powered by the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS CPU and Nvidia 3070 Max-Q GPU. In this video I demo gaming performance and give my initial impressions of this gaming laptop.

Suggestion: While doing any game testing you got to be in a densely populated area like big cities where there are lot of things happening that’s when you get good and accurate results. Cyberpunk has lot of frame drops inside cities.

Dude, I literally run cyber punk on all low settings and get 50-60 fps. The fact that you're on maxed out settings on a qhd screen shows how powerful this laptop is, geez.

When you turned Raytracing off with that option at the top, it also turns off DLSS. If you turn raytracing off but then scroll down and turn DLSS by itself back on, you might see performance improvements, even at 1440p.

@@TheDigitalDigest DLSS automatically and dynamically renderes the game at a lower resolution than what you selected in the resolution settings to try and up the FPS. This is the same technique that consoles use, but NVIDIA calls it DLSS, AMD calls it FidelityFX. Cyberpunk supports these two methods of dynamic resolution, and will show you the settings for your graphics card (DLSS in your case). So, next time, all games you test, please turn off DLSS and any dynamic resolution scaling for the most accurate results. Here, you are playing at 1440p but the game itself might be rendering at like 1080p to try and "target" those 60 fps. When you turned the game settings to "Ultra" down from "Raytracing", DLSS got turned off and the game was forced to render natively at 1440p that's why the FPS didn't seem to change a lot. DLSS is an awesome idea and a pretty cool way to get more FPS without turning the graphics down. But because its rendering the game at a lower resolution the image gets blurry and I don't like to play with it on because of that

@ DLSS is not the same as FidelityFX or consoles dynamic resolution scaling rofl, it's much better. It only gets blurry at performance and ultra performance, balanced looks as good as native and renders at 1080p on 1440p res

This is a pretty compelling machine. I have the Asus Zenbook Pro Duo, which is a monster, however, it's also a tank, especially once you're mobile. I may decide to put that to the Cyberpunk test to see how it holds up. Great video as always Ed.

@@Mike2004Fede the cooling system is great since ASUS sent a bios update. When I first got it, the system would get almost hot to the touch, but never throttle. The fan would run constantly on performance mode.

@@Terreos + i kinda like when the temperatures are a bit on the lower side. having high temps every time you game affects the lifespan of the machine.. so sure if you want more performance, go for strix but to me it doesn't seem like this performance isn't "enough", if i can get lower temps with still very decent performance, ill go for that (+ like the strix and g15 cost about the same so it's up to you really)

Hello! Can any owner confirm that the laptop actually kind of stores your fingerprint when pressing the ON button and tries to log into windows using it? Just submitted my unit thinking this was not a normal behaviour. RMA people tells that this is the expected design, not very sure, I have not seen this behaviour documented anywhere.

Hey man, I am having some issues with my g15.. The speakers sound blown, and I know they aren't because this is a brand new machine. Other people are complaining about this so I am guessing it is a driver issue of some sort. Also, my keyboard flickers whenever the computer is going into sleep mode or trying to, but I think that went away with a chipset update. I have updated everything as far as I know. I just need to fix the speakers mainly because that was my favorite part of the g14 and this one. Please help ..

I haven't seen any confirmation, but what I have read or heard from other reviewers is that if you upgrade the RAM - ie change the supplied 8GB stick for a 16 or 32, then the first 16GB or RAM will still run in dual channel mode. If that's true, then most games don't need more or even as much as 16GB RAM so there might not be a performance hit. But until somebody actually tests this, I'm not sure we can know for sure. I have this laptop and am still deciding whether to keep it or not - I'm comparing it to an MSI GE66 which has a higher wattage 3070 - but if I do keep it, I will be upgrading the RAM and storage.

Can you compare it with zephyrus g15 rtx 3080 and see whether it's worth it to buy the 3080 one with additional 500-700 usd? I heard that the vram of both 3070 amd 3080 are equal which is 8gb vram. So some say 3070 is preferrable in terms of value? But on the other hand, it's 3080 for a reason as it's definitely much more powerful. What do you think about it?

Not really, the 15 inch Eluktronics Mech G3 has a bigger battery with a mechanical keyboard. And price to performance wise the GP66 Leopard with 165W 3080 is $200 cheaper than the Prometheus which only has a 150W 3080, so it’s weaker.

Just a friendly reminder that the Dell G5 SE costs under 1000$ and is able to push very similar performance with the rx5600m gpu. It’s surely has not the same Build quality as the asus g15 , but comes with a 1080p 144 panel (or 120hz panel). You could always plug it into an external monitor for 4k I assume. Nonetheless, the quality on the display on the g15 is insane.

Ultimately it depends on how long you're willing to wait. It won't hurt to wait and see what else comes out this year, but finding things in stock can be a challenge. What I will say is that the 2020 Zephyrus G15 had disappointing thermals and can't really be recommended. Do the research and see if it's something you can you're willing to pay for.

Yeah but the Aero is coming with 2 so-dimms, this only 1 sodimm with 8 or 16gb soldered onto the motherboard... and that webcam - last year it could have been a compromise worth taking but another year later into all those pandemic restrictions around the world with all those remote life requirements it's quite harder to take in... mayhaps if they added that external one in the box or with an additional usb2/3 port that you could sparefor these duties this could have been more acceptable for most.

In those situations it can switch from the RTX 3070 to the Vega graphics on the CPU and the fans won't spin at all most of the time.
