Looks like they had some room to spare on GPU wattage with that beefy cooling solution, they really should update the bios or whatever necessary to increase the power limits cause the GPU was sitting pretty cool. Amazing review, Stephen, as always. I would recommend putting the battery life on a graph just so we would easily compare to the other laptops you reviewed under normal testing conditions (youtube playback or web browsing etc), though I know you said it in the video

@@OWNORDISOWN but ypu can get an usb dongle. You insert the SD card in the dongle and access all the data you got on the SD card. It may not be the fastest but I use that to acces big SD card on my phone.

I did end up pulling the trigger on this one. I preordered from Best Buy. I did have an issue with the first one. The audio never worked. I was lucky and able to go to my local best buy and they had 1 in stock I exchanged for. This laptop is a DREAM. The performance is just simply insane. I do game when I travel and I normally take my Alienware 51m with a 9900k and 2070 it. This laptop seems to keep up and beat it in a lot of ways. Which is insane considering the Alienware has a desktop CPU. I am a traveling software engineer and do a lot of work on airplanes and hotel rooms. Normally, I would do the work when I am on the road but would wait to compile and push till I got home and used my desktop. This laptop can handle it without much loss of time! It just blows my mind. The same project took almost 20 min on the Alienware, took less than 8 on this.

Looks great. I was wanting this model when it was first introduced last year but went with the 2020 omen 15 because asus wasn't selling it anywhere. Hey man, great review. What's the thing about the HDMI port? Noticed on some slides that you test some games whit an external screen and FPS where dramatically low, why is that? Thanks, glad you liked it ! The hdmi port is connected to the vega GPU, not the Nvidia GPU so when connecting the laptop to a monitor you need to use the usbC port . You actually have it the wrong way round, attaching to a monitor via USB C will maximize frame rate as the iGPU is not being used at all. Since the laptop uses Optimus the screen is connected to the iGPU and as you will see in my video later today the iGPU can be use due to about 33% in some games. In Cyberpunk you take a 21% hit using the laptop screen.

Looking at the Cyberpunk clockspeeds and noticed they are low. Is that normal as my laptop a Dell G5 i7 10750h RTX 2070MQ in balanced power mode, power slider half way (setting 2 of 3) and performance thermals gets about 3.5-3.6ghz and I was concerned about this but its normal?

I'm torn between this one and the new Max 17 (very similar to last years model). The Max has a higher wattage 3070, two ram slots, and a bigger screen, but the g15 has a better CPU, better speakers, and it seems to run cooler and quieter from what I can tell. The video port going via intergrated GPU is actually incredibly convinient for people who connect and disconnect external monitor very often. Because if you connect an external monitor via a port which does via Nvidia GPU the system becomes stuttery and unpleasant to use, especially noticeable in games; this is only fixed with a complete reboot. Another bad thing happens if that when you disconnect external display for the laptop a GPU stays on and drains the power almost twice as fast compared to just integrated graphics. Again, fixed with a reboot or disabling Nvidia graphics manually in the device manager. I do a lot of 24\7 rendering and can't just pause or progress will be lost, so rebooting is not an option. I can't fully express my frustration when I got a laptop with only discrete GPU port and had to either suffer from stutters or lose my rendering process, as well as all other programs and files that I kept open, every single time. Could this be just my Dell laptop? Nope, my friend with an MSI raider laptop tried connecting his laptop to an external monitor, and until he rebooted it the stutters were even worse, it was pretty much unusable. Which is why I'm gonna make pretty damn sure that my next laptop supports video out with integrated GPU, even if I have to lose some performance in a few games, at least I'll enjoy stable and smooth experience and won't sacrifice battery life on the go.

Hi Ali, the only issue I have with the G15 was optimus taking a decent hit in frame rate. The GP66 has the advantage of being able to switch to dedicated GPU mode and thus better frame rates. I reviewed the GE66 with a 3070 so performance will be akin to that. The G15 has great battery life though.

In the early days of optimus you sometimes had to use custom video drivers from the laptop manufacturer because Nvidias own release drivers wouldnt always install . Is this still the case or can you use the latest nvidia drivers if you want to see performance gains in new games?

A 2080 max Q is still plenty decent to be fair. My 2070 super is about 15 to 20% faster than my 2080 Max Q and the 3070 Max P 125w is another 15% faster. I think this 3070 in the G15 will be 25 to 30% faster than my 2080 MQ. Ill probably do a video comparing them. I expect the difference to be greater in heavy Ray Tracing workloads.

Thanks, glad you liked it :) The two would make a good comparison but the nod for me would go to the G15 unless you think Intel Quicksync acceleration will be better than the 8 core CPU on the G15. The latter has better battery life, it has a very nice design. I really liked the rainbow effect on the lid too.

Seeing these Performance results for this makes me have zero regrets buying my Alienware m17 R3 with RTX 2070S on sale during Black Friday this last year. Other than better CPU temps there's no advantage to upgrading this gen from a RTX 2070S Max-P laptop this gen.

I have both the Alienware M17R3 with the 2070S here with this G15. I'm seeing 10fps faster in the games I play with the 2070S. Kind of bummed out......LOL. But the 5900HS processor has mind boggling performance. To bad the 80w 3070 is so dissapointing. Now to make a decision on which one to keep.

@@cmacclel yeah, I was kind of worried about it when I purchased it even though I got mine for a fairly good deal (about 30% off sticker price) and it has had really good performance and I started seeing leaks of benchmarks but real world performance reviews have been somewhat lackluster it seems and this whole thing with not very transparent TDPs has showed I actually did pretty well with my purchase decision and not splurging on the latest and greatest. Although the ASUS ROG STRIX 17" has a pretty good lead in performance to the Alienware m17 R3 2070S it's 20% at most over it and is in a considerably larger footprint compared to the m17. The main advantage is that Ryzen 9 5900HS which has better performance per watt and better temps (I control mine on demanding games through undervolt and capping TDP to 45W while gaming and using Cool mode on really demanding games with an OC on the GPU to compensate).

Only thing I hate is when I got the G14 with 32gb Ram, top spec Ryzen processor in black, when It became faulty it was next to impossible to find same spec one. Now with this I want the Ryzen 9, 3070 in grey, it is listed on their site but not one store in the UK has that SKU. Why is it so hard to give them my money LOL
