Looks like they had some room to spare on GPU wattage with that beefy cooling solution, they really should update the bios or whatever necessary to increase the power limits cause the GPU was sitting pretty cool. Amazing review, Stephen, as always. I would recommend putting the battery life on a graph just so we would easily compare to the other laptops you reviewed under normal testing conditions (youtube playback or web browsing etc), though I know you said it in the video

I did end up pulling the trigger on this one. I preordered from Best Buy. I did have an issue with the first one. The audio never worked. I was lucky and able to go to my local best buy and they had 1 in stock I exchanged for. This laptop is a DREAM. The performance is just simply insane. I do game when I travel and I normally take my Alienware 51m with a 9900k and 2070 it. This laptop seems to keep up and beat it in a lot of ways. Which is insane considering the Alienware has a desktop CPU. I am a traveling software engineer and do a lot of work on airplanes and hotel rooms. Normally, I would do the work when I am on the road but would wait to compile and push till I got home and used my desktop. This laptop can handle it without much loss of time! It just blows my mind. The same project took almost 20 min on the Alienware, took less than 8 on this.

Hey man, great review. What's the thing about the HDMI port? Noticed on some slides that you test some games whit an external screen and FPS where dramatically low, why is that? Thanks, glad you liked it ! The hdmi port is connected to the vega GPU, not the Nvidia GPU so when connecting the laptop to a monitor you need to use the usbC port . You actually have it the wrong way round, attaching to a monitor via USB C will maximize frame rate as the iGPU is not being used at all. Since the laptop uses Optimus the screen is connected to the iGPU and as you will see in my video later today the iGPU can be use due to about 33% in some games. In Cyberpunk you take a 21% hit using the laptop screen.

A 2080 max Q is still plenty decent to be fair. My 2070 super is about 15 to 20% faster than my 2080 Max Q and the 3070 Max P 125w is another 15% faster. I think this 3070 in the G15 will be 25 to 30% faster than my 2080 MQ. Ill probably do a video comparing them. I expect the difference to be greater in heavy Ray Tracing workloads.

I'm torn between this one and the new Max 17 (very similar to last years model). The Max has a higher wattage 3070, two ram slots, and a bigger screen, but the g15 has a better CPU, better speakers, and it seems to run cooler and quieter from what I can tell. Great video as always!! I will definitely be checking out the merch store. So I got my G15 from BB 2 days ago and performance-wise I'm seeing very much on par with you. Slightly faster in Firestrike graphics, and slightly slower in Timespy - but ballpark. In terms of gaming performance, like you I notice a definite advantage of the Max-P 3070 in the GE66 over the G15, and especially when using my external monitor. So it makes it extremely hard for me to choose which laptop to keep - G15 is a nicer laptop, GE66 has more oomph for gaming at my desk. I'm performing mental gymnastics to see if I can justify keeping both LOL. regarding the external monitor, my G15 has an issue and I wonder if you could check to see if you have the same? My monitor is a 3440x1440 144Hz HDR G-Sync monitor (Asus PG35VQ) and I connect to it via USB-C to displayport cable, whether using the G15 or the GE66. When the G15 is connected to the monitor, and I boot or reboot the G15, after logging into windows I get an error dialog from the radeon software. I forget the exact wordage but it's something like "failed to load library modules: error 126", which I have to dismiss, and the radeon software will not launch. This is 100% reproducible, every boot. If I subsequently disconnect the monitor, the radeon software can launch. It's not a dealbreaker because I don't care about the Radeon integrated graphics when I'm using a monitor, but the error dialog takes a few minutes to pop up, and completely interrupts whatever I'm doing. For example yesterday it happened in the middle of firestrike, and I had to force kill 3dmark as a result. As a workaround, I could remove radeon software from startup items in task manager, but then I'd have a problem when using the laptop on its internal screen, which is that I probably wouldn't get freesync until I manually launched radeon software, and you can guarantee that I would forget. Anyway as usual I have written a gigantic screed, but if you have time, would you be able to see if your G15 is doing the same thing? I googled this issue and other people have had it with other radeon cards in other situations, it's not necessarily a G15 specific issue, but there doesn't seem to be a resolution that I can find. Thanks Craig. Sounds like a conflict between video cards, like Radeon software is saying hey, where’s the Vega GPU? I see one suggestion , run command prompt as administrator then type C:\Windows\System32\copy atio6axx.dll .dll I think there is a space between copy and atio. If it doesn’t work let me know and I’ll ask Asus.

So while I was typing that previous reply to you, I was on the GE66, on lap, on battery, in discrete GPU mode, and I started getting corruption on the screen. I took some photos with my phone. I haven't seen anything like that on the GE66 before, and now I'm concerned about it. I rebooted the GE66 into optimus mode and will see if it happens again. Incidentally about the GE66 I had mentioned about crashes after undervolt on another of your videos, and you and a commenter had recommended I tone it down, so I did that. I reduced it from -100mV to -80mV and so far temps and performance seem good with that, and no crashes so far. Anyway, after seeing that graphics issue with the GE66, maybe it's just my unit or just a one time thing, but it might swing me back towards the G15 being my keeper. I am certainly having an interesting time with these 2 laptops!! Which one (or either) will keep my money, I have no idea lol!

@@shirokuro73 my GE66 with the 2070 super has transparency issue, well documented. No Intel driver fixes it, in fact the latest driver makes the screen flash so I stick the old driver. I heard a clean install of windows fixes it so I should try that, just can't be bothered to load everything back up again!

@@OWNORDISOWN I'm not sure I want to go through a complete windows scratch install on the GE66, especially when I'm still deciding whether to keep it or not, so for now I will keep it in hybrid mode and see if the issue happens in that. If I'm connected to my monitor, it's bypassing optimus anyway, and if I'm gaming on the internal screen, the 3070 will crush almost anything at 1080p (except maybe cyberpunk LOL) such that the optimus penalty won't really matter. As for the Asus, I tried that fix and it didn't work. I then tried re-downloading the Radeon software from the MyAsus app, and reinstalling them, that didn't fix it either :-( I'm sure you are right that it is some conflict between the 2 GPUs or the 2 sets of graphics software, but I'd really like to get it sorted. I don't want to return the machine because of it, but sadly I might, because desk usage, especially with Covid, is a main use case for me. If you could ask Asus, if you have the time, that would be amazing. If they contact me, I am happy to reproduce, collect logs etc etc. Thanks again!

Hey! Thought I'd reach out here to give others a heads up. I received mine and was thrilled with certain aspects of it. However, two issues for me are showstoppers. The screen is not bright enough. Second, I saw this on a different reviewers review of the this laptop,. He mentioned reports of the speakers popping when loud. Yup. Mine do that. Sigh.... so much about this laptop I loved. Back to BestBuy it goes.

Waiting on mine to get here (supposedly the 16th) The performance seems very good overall. The ram config is honestly my biggest hangup still. I have a pretty good return policy so I'm planning to give it a good shot and if I have any doubts I'll take it back. I wanted something smaller and lighter that could still pack a punch to go with my 3080 desktop

@@OWNORDISOWN I just received it today and I'm so far very impressed with the performance and the screen. My only concern at this point is the ram as 16 is a bit tight feeling, is there any chance you are planning to test out the performance impact if you did say upgrade it to 24gb of ram as 8gb of it will end up in single channel mode?

Might seem like a dumb question but would the Rear heat sync's damage the laptop screen due to heat after prolonged use?

Great review. Very disappointed in the lack of mux/advanced optimus in the asus gaming laptops though, i cancelled my preorder because of it, doubt im alone.

Yes, I told Asus that its a trending issue . They thought people wouldn't want it but its gaining in popularity as the larger review sites cover it.

I'm looking for a new laptop to replace my old GT72, this looks like a good one. Amazing how much more they can fit in a smaller package than they could just a few years ago.
