why is that laptop performing far better than the rog scar III where they are similar in specs? Is it because of thermals? :/

scar is just older design.... that why....(as first gen owner) but i would not buy any of them until they did a better quality version. what will happen is the plastic will creak the adapter plug with break...(not cover under warranty) the heat will rise overtime...(I got feeling they used cheaper battery support to cut cost.) Just no... RTX2070 sound good... at first but RTX2060 would do the similar job.... with lower price... and we coming to the end of the year... next year they just going to refresh new one again....

Still alright. I am mostly using it connected to a 27inch 1440p 144hz gaming monitor with mouse, keyboard, Bluetooth speaker and/or headset desk setup. Playing jedi survivor atm on 1440p low to mid settings 40-60fps on average dipping hard down to 28-30fps on central Koboh, outer Koboh it is fine. I’ve downloaded Ghost of Tsushima Director’s cut and planing to play it next gave it a go and it seems it performs better than Jedi survivor as EA after a year still did not completely fixed the optimisation issues with the game. Overall it is hard to believe but after 4 and a half years of use I still see very little argument for upgrading to a current gen one as it just simply works fine for me. I am used to 1440p 40-70fps depending on the game, or higher on 1080p (laptop’s original screen resolution is 1080p). I played 1080p 30fps on PlayStation for ages so 1440p 40-70fps on current triple A games is perfect fine in my books. I also tinker around with playnite and emulations, it plays swith games better than I play on my switch, ps3, xbox360 and any other emulator plays quite well. I really don’t see any point to get a new laptop as of late 2024 as long as it keeps working.

Hey Jarrod. Love the detail in these reviews. I purchased this laptop about 1 week ago, still evaluating it myself. Have the full spec model with 240hz display. I played some game sessions with it, which was Wolfenstien and Control, when i checked the temps after approx 20mins, using the Asus Armory Crate my temps where around the 70-80 on the CPU and GPU was around 60-70, this is not much detail for anyone, but for a casual game session like i use it for i was really impressed. I also had a VR session with my Oculus Rift S connected to it, and it ran awesome. I found the Turbo mode really good. I use a laptop riser, not a cooling pad, but found the riser keeps it up with good air flow. So far i really like the machine, only annoyance i had was the manufacturer stickers , but once i removed those, it looks clean AF, and a real smart looking machine. I prefer this over the Razer and new Alienware line, but that's subjective. If you are looking for shear game performance this thing is brilliant.

@@Cali_90s While gaming my temps on the CPU never go over 74-75, they seem to stay consistent when gaming around 75 on the CPU, and the GPU never seems to go over 65. That's my experience anyway. This machine manages the temps really well. Just make sure to keep some good air ventilation around the machine and in the room, or area, you are using it when under heavy load like gaming, as from my experience it does expel a lot of hot air, as it does a good job of removing the heat from the machine, and soon warms your room up, lol. If you can position it near an open window, or place a small desktop cooling fan near the rear of the machine while under heavy load i think it will help improve temps over time.

Hi Jarrod, thanks for the review, it's really on point. The quality and detail isn't really something you see coming out of Australia and you're going to grow big if you can maintain the rage! You mention thermals not being a huge issue, but if you can get the same spec GX701GW do you think it will perform a fraction better due to the improved cooling? I guess it would be about the same as the 2080MQ version you have reviewed.
@JarrodsTech
@JarrodsTech 5 жыл бұрын
Cheers. I have tested the GX701 in the past but yeah different specs, my guess is it may do better, as it both opens the bottom but also has the whole back half of the machine dedicated to intake, but then you also have to deal with the forward keyboard placement.

i own a similar GX502 with only 16gb ram and a 240hz monitor Pros of having this laptop: 1) high performance cpu + gpu 2) great keyboard and touchpad IMO, 3) great 240hz monitor but not many games can reach 240fps. 4) somewhat light and portable but u always have to carry the AC adapter around unless u switch to garbage optimus mode. ( i get around slightly over 3hrs of battery life just by doing coding tutorials in lectures on discrete graphics mode) Cons: 1) bad thermals when gaming (even on turbo profile, i get 90+degrees on cpu for a game like destiny 2) 2) needs alot of tinkering with profile settings in order to get better performance 3) Asus software is literally garbage, my optimus wasnt working properly, while it worked sometimes, on most other occasions it will run games on intel HD graphics instead of the RTX 2070. 4) the keyboard LEDs cant be customized individually (failure on Asus part mostly) 5) the features in Asus armory crate aren't particularly useful tbh, the features that actually help improve performance are mostly done by other external programs if your individual needs can be satisfied by this machine despite its hefty price tag and its cons, it will be quite a decent laptop depending on what you use it for.

From my experience, no impact provided decent materials used. My previous laptop was an HP dv5 with 9600m gt (yeah old) which I thrashed for 6 years, and it's still going. You could almost cook an egg on the left palm rest. Very uncomfortable, but reliable nevertheless. My current laptop is an Asus ROG g751jy and that has also been thrashed daily for the last 3 years with cpu living at 90C and GPU 80C daily. No problems with either. However if the materials are deficient, like the old 8600m GT which couldn't handle many heat cycles before the solder cracked (problem with multiple laptop brands), then yeah you've got a time bomb that no amount of keeping cool will remedy anyway.

Hey Jarrod, great video. I am looking for a 15" top tier gaming laptop, in uour personal opinion would you say the GX502GW is best bang for the buck or perhaps another model? Or is there an upcoming release [or an upcoming review] worth a wait?
@JarrodsTech
@JarrodsTech 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I wouldn't say it's best bang for buck, but definitely best bang haha, performs well but isn't cheap. In terms of value for money Helios 300 gets a lot of performance per dollar. I am not aware of any laptops coming soon, I doubt there will be many until we get new Nvidia GPUs/Intel CPUs, but that probably won't be til next year (not including Intel 10th gen Y/U series CPUs which aren't used in gaming laptops).

Jarrod, can you recommend me one gaming laptop that would not thermal throttle in hot days? Since you are from AU, I figured that you might have some in mind. Reason: I'm from Brazil and most of the year we can have 30C+ temperatures and my current laptop is throttling A LOT because of it.
@JarrodsTech
@JarrodsTech 5 жыл бұрын
Not really, sorry, basically everything will throttle one way or another. If there's no thermal throttle, it's usually because there's a harsher power limit which restricts performance anyway and prevents it getting too hot. The best one I've ever tested was probably the Helios 500, it's big and thick but has huge heatsinks and large powerful fans. Most machines can get pretty good improvements with a cooling pad and undervolting, or changing the paste if you're willing to get inside.

Hi guys. I want to share my experience with this laptop. From performance perspective it is a great machine. I just think, that Asus itself doesn't know what it is doing with this laptop. Because in my country this laptop costs approx 2300€ in 16GB RAM + 512GB SSD which isn't little money for a laptop. And yet I had to return it 2 times to recieve let's say an "acceptable" unit. My first piece had really bad coil whine. So I returned it and recieved even worse piece. The second piece had also problem with coil whine but it wasn't that significant. Poorly assembled touchpad (the top part of touchpad was higher than bottom part). And the whole construction was vibrating (either while typing on keyboard, or listening from speakers). And also it had really annoying squeaking-sounding coil whine when laptop was in sleep mode. So I also returned that one and now I have third one and this seems to be finally "fine", yet the right Function (FN) button on this unit is somehow again poorly assembled and when pressed under certain angles or on certain places it is squeaking and there is some strange resistance. But that is not the thing that I can not live with since there is second FN button anyways. So overall. I would recommend this laptop, just I would say to be prepared that you might be forced to return it (maybe several times) until you get fully working unit, because rumours about Asus' poor quality control seems to be true. Moreover one more thing. For the first 2 unites that I've recieved the "MyAsus" app was saying that they were constructed on 5/5/2019 and this third one unit was constructed 6/21/2019 and they are a little different. This third unit that was constructed later feels sturdier. And also it has different speakers. The first two units had more bass-heavy speakers and this third later unit has more balanced speakers. Less bass but clearer sound.

Hey i know I’m late but you can set a maximum preferred temperature in throttle stop instead of underclocking and losing performance you can set the throttling temperature of the CPU to something you want (in my case i set it to 85C) by going to options and then you should find PROCHOT value thingy with a 14 value. Since temperature in intel CPUs is counted the opposite way and that is how far they are from their TJmax temperature (in this CPU it is100C) 14 means max temp is 86C. Now you can enjoy your PC without worrying about the thing reaching over 90C and better performance.

Probably the ASUS, G-Sync will boost FPS in most games by around 15%.

This could be the best laptop if they get a wifi 6 and a thunderbolt. and for a killing machine a i9 9980hk, double slot for ram memory and the touch screen numpad. My dream laptop XD

Hey man, what 16g RAM did you install on this laptop? My 2013 MacBook just bit the dust so I’m planning on picking this model up but don’t know which RAM to buy.

It comes with 16gb soldered to the motherboard, if you want to install a single 16gb stick (which is recommended to run in dual channel mode), then pretty much any SODIMM stick that can run at DDR4-2666 CL19 should be fine. Mine came with Samsung M471A2K43DB1-CTD

Correct me if i am wrong, but it is absolutely useless for using laptop coolers underneath it? If there is no holes down below? Looks like a decent machine.

can you disable the GPU?

Not sure what you mean. In optimus mode the Nvidia GPU will only get used if you open a game or something, or you can disable the Intel GPU and run with the Nvidia GPU only.

Hello Jarod, i find your reviews very informative. Keep up the hard work 👌. I have been looking into buying a new laptop for a while now, do you think i should consider this laptop over the asus zephyrus g14 or MSI gs66 stealth?

I bought the same laptop from your video, but my fps in far below your test. I get 80fps playing rainbow six siege on low settings. Am I doing anything wrong? What should I do?

Do you have single channel memory (no stick installed and on board memory in use)? Do you have the Intel GPU disabled (an option in the armoury crate to only use Nvidia GPU), do you have the highest turbo mode enabled? Using Vulkan?

No. But it will still play that game perfectly fine without issue.
