First heard Carly Simon , when my girlfriend played her 8 track in her car . The No Secrets Album . It was late 1972 and I still had 1 more year in the army after already serving 3 . I fell in love with listening to it , and married the girl when I got back from Germany . She had a deep sultry voice like Carly Simon . We’re still married after 50 years .

That's a beautiful story and I'm so glad I read it! Congratulations on 50 years! Also, thank you for your service in whatever capacity. I'm afraid this is the decade when people like us are going to mourn the losses of many of the greats who have brought us so much joy in their music. Take good care.

I saw James Taylor perform at a small concert hall well after their divorce. At one point, he sat on the floor of the stage with his legs dangling and he talked. About his life and his marriage to Carly. He took the blame and said he felt overwhelmed when they had children and that he kind of just fled. On the stage that day, he apologized to her.

He apologized to the public, not quite the same thing; but it shows contrition. Up until now, I had never heard any sense of his responsibility about it.

At 73 I still feel a great love for Carly. Her music has been an inspiration and the soundtrack of my life since I was young. Now my LPs are long gone and I have replaced them with new cds of all of her music. I often buy new ones as gifts for my friends. But I will never even lend my cds out and have even purchased several duplicates to have and treasure. Its funny how my hair turned from brown to white but Carlys music plays on in my heart and I sing with her as I drive home. Carly is a gift to me and I thought about her and her loss when she was being inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Thank You and Love you, Carly.

I have always admired Carly Simon. I was about 12 when I first heard her voice on the radio, and WOW! She blew my mind. I had never really heard another woman with a lower pitch to her voice, like mine. I thought that she was beautiful and I loved her sense of style. She was my role model. I wanted to be just like her when I grew up. When I was 20, I met a guy and fell in love. We used to go to bars and I would sing karaoke, singing Carly's songs. Fast forward to 1994. I left my husband after being beaten and abused for more than 15 years. He choked me one last time, damaging my vocal chords. So that ended my dream of being just like Carly. I still listen to her albums and enjoy the reminiscing. ❤

Both Carly and James had complicated confusing childhoods, which have made their adult lives trickier to navigate. At this age, I suspect they are grateful for the good times but 'haven't got time for the pain' of re-litigating who disappointed whom. None of our business anyway.

As a psychologist, I would compassionately say that these are two very complicated people with difficult childhood, and both had complexities forming an intimate relationship with anyone as adults. This is not to blame them whatsoever. Both of them have tried to overcome these things and have succeeded in a number of ways and basically they should just give each other a hug and let it go, that relationship conflict would be the best thing for each of them

They sound like a terrible match with him doing drugs and drinking and her not. He's also said he felt he was too young when they got married. People who get married at a young age are basically throwing dice as to whether they'll have a successful marriage or not.

Perhaps I'm cynical, but to me this video and many of the comments here are silly. Their marriage ended over forty years ago. James Taylor has been married to his current wife (who is his third wife,) for over 23 years, and they have children together - twin sons who are now 23 years old! JT and his wife seem to be quite happy together. As to Carly, since her marriage to James ended she was briefly engaged, then she was married for 20 years to a nice man, James Hart, whose problem was that he struggled with his sexuality. They divorced, and it appears that Carly is now living with her male partner on Martha's Vineyard. Still, she says she still wants to "heal" James. To all appearances, he is "healed." It's time for Carly and the public to LET GO of the JT/Carly Simon mythology - a high-profile marriage that lasted eleven years and ended so long ago.

Lol 😂 - You consider their childhoods "difficult"... and you're a psychologist?! Do you only treat the wealthy?? Regarding them reconciling - "It's too late baby, now it's too late... though we really did try to make it." They're in their 80s! What's that "Beatles" tune? "LET IT BE" ...whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

Carly’s music is uniquely mesmerizing & I am impressed that she wrote most of the songs herself. It is interesting that she came from the Simon & Schuster family. I have recently been drawn to taking a deeper dive into “Coming Around Again”, listening almost obsessively & discovering some of her other songs like “Anticipation” in a deeper way. She should be very fulfilled just knowing how much joy she has brought into this world with her songs & performances. God Bless her & James!!

I love both of them for their music and the fact that they each stand their ground, they stand in their own truth. I’m sad that James couldn’t be there for his kids when they were young. I’ve seen some duets with James and his son and they are quite good. I would be remiss without admitting that their divorce and separation really tore me up as I idolized them both. It’s sad when the love is deeper than the personalities can tolerate. Hopefully fate will bring them both to a better loving understanding and acceptance of their past trespasses however perceived. Still love them both for their commitment to their musical heart strings. Thank you both for breathing love, laughter, and the blues into my heart. As the old song goes, “ you made me love you, I didn’t want to do it,” because it eventually hurt some pretty deep stuff too.

As I turned 81, I have fond memories of ‘introducing’ my own children to James’ artistic world when he would make his annual performance visits to Great Woods in MA. When they were just babies in the early 70’s, I remember James having been in rehab in Boston. Carly holds a separate special place in my heart, and I identify her as a talent all on her own, with the collaboration with Livingston as a unique arrangement. All of my memories of both feed into the material I have chosen to emulate, as I am still an active piano entertainer on the Cape.

You can't get close to an addict, because the drugs or alcohol come first. But in his case, it sounds like alcohol relaxed him and lowered his reserve. I read that he married her because he was jealous of her budding attraction to Mick Jagger - purely to keep her away from Mick. That's not enough of a solid basis for a marriage. I think she saw so much of his self-destructive behavior that facing her means facing his own problems that she witnessed for so long, at such close quarters. She did everything she could to accommodate him and help him, but as long as he was ashamed of himself, her efforts came to represent being confronted with his own failures. He never mentioned her at all in his autobiography, even though she's the mother of his first two children, his fellow performer and his first wife. It's a weird and shocking way to try to simply eliminate any accountability or self-reflection about his own behavior during the marriage. His avoidance seems cowardly, even if he did go on to recover from addiction. But he waited until they broke up, so somehow his ambivalence about who he was with her was keeping him caught in addiction. I wonder how he would have reacted if she'd treated him coldly too. That would have been another strange dynamic to get caught up in.

I was married for 32 yrs. From 17-49. I’m 52 now & I can say, that I withdrew from my wife. It was my ever worsening depression. You feel like she deserves better than you. You’re not worthy of love from anyone close. Isolating myself. She always said we’d work thru it. In the end, I left. We were living g in Houston Tx after being born & raised in NY our whole lives. The heat there, makes you stay inside for 9 months out of the yr. It’s like winter in NY. Everyone stays inside. When we did go out, I’d be drenched with/sweat. Her? Never a drop of sweat. So, after 3 yrs in Texas. I left to go back to NY & she stayed there. Our daughter & son we’re grown & I couldn’t take the guilt anymore of not being g able to go places, becoming distant etc. my point. I have a feeling it was similar to JT. Not that we don’t love each other. Just at different points in life that didn’t include us together. Sometimes I regret it Immensely, other times I feel good. I was beaten as a child, so it may be that resentment, but directed at the wrong person?? Still reflecting. Anyway, as I said…my situation & JT’s are very similar.

Freedom has a price and I hope you heal your childhood emotional wounds. I’m in recovery (28yrs) and have learned to love myself. My mom and dad stayed together through his alcoholism and her codependency. I’ve stopped blaming them because they’re no longer here. They did the best they could. 💟☮️

Didn't know JT had a problem with profusely sweating in Houston ,that's interesting,an easy way to overcome that, is to go outdoors during the heat of the day and slowly built your outdoor time up ,sounds to me ,you never gave yourself a chance to get acclimatized. It strikes me as truly sad that two such talented artists whom have given so much to the world of music, both individually & collectively, have no room in their lives for a lasting friendship at the very least. Especially given the fact that they have also given the world two very talented offspring. Sad and perhaps even tragic especially given that James has long put his demons to rest and Carly has lost so much of her family. I hope they can find a way to come together once again as life is short! The love they once shared should guide a path for them to a find lasting bond in a peaceful, respectful and enduring kinship. It would be awesome.

James Taylor had many psychological problems and his addictions to booze and heroin probably lead to the demise of the rot marriage. It appears that Carly tried harder than he did because he is so self-absorbed. When Ben was a young boy, he had his kidney removed and James never showed up at the hospital. It’s probably James guilt which keeps him for contacting his son. Sad.

Seems like a very shallow man if that's what Taylor done. I know all the apologists will make excuses for him but that is pretty inexcusable. Any father who isn't willing to do what a father should do should take steps not to become a parent. It reminds me of all the dolts one would see on Maury or that type of show that i don't bother watching. All the DNA tests looking for the "real father" while more single-family homes is today's "normal" for some.

Carly Simon's first big hit The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be came out just over 2 years before my parents separated. I was 15 , knew it was coming and supported my mother's decision to leave an unhappy/unfulfilled marriage. Her music on her next few albums helped me deal emotionally. Songs like The Garden, Grownup,Loving You's The Right Thing To Do, Forever My Love,Boys In The Trees,My Older Sister, etc. SOOTHED MY SOUL!

Yeah, Carly Simon sure can exercise a powerful influence on people. I'm 71 years old now, but way back when I was a young man, I had a dream that Carly Simon had invited me to a Summer lawn party, on Nantauket or somewhere like that. So, keeping the invitation with me so that security wouldn't throw my nobody ass out of there I showed up for the party. The lawn was as large as a park, and most of the guests, nearly all recognizably famous were collected under this great large tree, and I was off some distance away on a bench. Well, Carly noticed me and came scampering across the grass and sat down next to me and chit chatted to make me feel comfortable, and then she took me by the arm and pulled me up off the bench and insisted I follow her back so she could introduce me all around. Yeah, every time I remember that dream I tell myself that if I ever meet Carly Simon, I'lll have to remember to thank her for inviting me to her party and then for being such a kind hostess. Thumbs up.

Most divorced couples with grown children don't have a "relationship," per se. They go their own ways and only communicate as needed for their children. There's nothing wrong with that. She seems to be the one who wants to drag him back into her life. He' seems happy as he is. I do wish he could reconcile with his son, though. I wonder how he gets along with his daughter.

She's a strong and talented woman who survived the worse. Shes a beautiful human being. James Taylor is a man who seems to avoid problems and runs when things get tough. Its a bit cowardly and selfish. It seems easier for him to distance himself from those who love him and he finds more solace in his addictions.

I've always been a HUGE Carly Simon fan. In the 80s, I worked with a lady who was a friend of the family, and she's the one who told me of the difficulties in their marriage due to James' addiction. I'm not judging, for it's a great thing he was able to beat that albatross, but it seems that by Carly being so supportive, it just pointed out each and every time James failed her, and it made him sink even lower in his own self-esteem. The marriage had to end for him to start feeling better about himself, and that was the impetus for him to finally beat his addiction. I am not as big a James Taylor fan, but I like his music, and always will. But there is no reason not to see or interact with each other, and their children. And I get it - he's unsure of her forgiveness toward him. But I do wish them both every happiness.
