Marilyn Maye used to live down the street from me back in the 1960s, in a very modest home in Overland Park, KS. As kids, we didn’t care about her voice, she had the reputation for giving out great candy on Halloween.

Marilyn did Hello Dolly in the summer months of 1984 in Galveston. The show was in an outdoor amphitheater on the beach. Imagine wearing the corsets, heavy costumes & thrilly hats, while singing and dancing in the Galveston heat and humidity. It was brutal. Yet, she wasn’t phased. She gave 100% every night. She was also very generous with us youngsters in the chorus.

She is often in Palm Springs, CA performing 2-3 times per year. I was able to see her once and before I even knew who she was. She really is amazing!

She was also on Johnny Carson something like 40 times. He obviously had an affinity for her and her talent. I've only had the pleasure of seeing her once in person about 15 years ago. Not sure what words there are beyond "national treasure", which is used a lot. I'm still amazed she has a voice, unlike many of the rockers I have seen in the past 10 or 20 years. No beat box needed here. Love you Marilyn!

(born April 10, 1928) is an American jazz singer, cabaret singer, and musical theater actress. She began her career as a young child, performing in Kansas in concerts and on the radio. After graduating from high school, she moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she drew the attention of Steve Allen, performing first on and then with Johnny Carson. She is the most frequently heard singer on the program, having appeared 76 times. She recorded for RCA Victor during the 1960s, after which she has had a successful career as a cabaret singer. Ella Fitzgerald referred to Maye as "the greatest white female singer in the world."

I was performing in the same town as Ms Maye for a few years. In a magical gay land called Provincetown. Unfortunately both shows were always at 7 pm and every day overlapped. Each year I felt crushed. I got to meet her and pose for pictures but that isn't quite the same. Then I got to see her 90th birthday show at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach. I splurged on the higher end seats. Honestly one of the best shows I've ever seen.
