This is probably the closest any of us will ever get to meeting that curious older gentleman at a local tavern who offers wisdom and eventually an epic quest to go on in some fantasy world and it's amazing.

@@Peacefrog91 I spent a lot of my life wandering the world and in certain places (especially smaller villages and the like) the local pub is where you meet some of the most interesting folks. American bars don't really resemble a town pub much other than they both sell drinks.

I've been listening Morte d'Arthur and noticing Dawn Treader resonances as well 😄 I think it first occurred to me at the detail of the knights getting by magic what each best liked to eat, as the crew gets from Coriakin at the Dufflepud Island.
@aletheuo475Ай бұрын
Yes. I thought that whole scene felt very Narnian, like an appearance of the Lion, surrounded by light and fragrance.
@phuzzo1Ай бұрын
Another lovely video. Dawn Treader is a beautiful story. It doesn't matter that I'm not religious myself, i can still see and appreciate what Lewis was doing. The ending reliably has me in tears, as it brings the epic of the 4 siblings to an end, and the feelings of both Lucy and Edmond that they will not see Aslan again alive, nor any of the Narnians, are poignant. That he is still with them anyway is an overtly Christian message, but I get it nonetheless, I can see how people can get a lot of inspiration, solace, and hope from belief in a benevolent deity. What really stands out to me, though, is Eustace's arc. He is a very recognizable character, a child of a more modern upbringing than the other children. Lewis is fairly clearly disdainful of the type of person Eustace's parents are, and he is a living depiction of the unlikable qualities that can emerge when children are raised without a strong moral compass. But Lewis's message is that redemption is always possible and Aslan comes to him in his darkest hour and guides him out of the curse he brought upon himself. He's like every sinner on Earth. Again, it doesn't matter that I don't personally believe in any God, I can still see the beautiful symbolism in the story. This then continues in The Silver Chair, which is reliably my favourite Narnia book of all, with the beautifully set up redemption scene after the 2 children have systematically failed to follow all of Aslan's instructions. As a teacher myself, I have to hold to the idea that a student can find a path to learning, no matter how long they have resisted, or how little support they get from home. You have to just keep kindly offering support, just the way Aslan does. We can all take the inspiration we find helpful from stories. Thank you Malcom for the reading. The moment you even mentioned the Arthurian symbolism, the Grail stories leapt to mind. Nice to spot the knife/spear connection, and I guess that Reepicheep is a living embodiment of the purest knightly qualities, a Galahad cipher, only much funnier and more relatable.

Thank you for this spell in your library, Malcolm. I didn't read 'The Chronicles of Narnia' until I read it to our children during a round-trip car ride from Ohio to Florida thirty-four years ago. Already a fan of Lewis's other writing and already in the habit of reading to my wife and kids while my wife took the wheel, I dove into 'The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.' I had no idea how enchanted, moved, and inspired I would be. I've gone back to Narnia many times since and long for Aslan's country, the most sublime rendering of the new heaven and the new earth I have ever encountered. Please go to your doctor and get that cough checked. Thanks for these spells in the library. God bless you.

It’s amazing to me, and a sweet providence amidst this dark world, that as we get older- faery tales are richer and fuller and deeper than I ever imagined them to be when I was a boy. Or maybe I did imagine it as so when I was young, only now I am able to grasp and hold onto the joy with the comprehension that experience brings.
