I am surprised that there is anything living in that part of the river so those fish must be some proper tough ones with all the pollution going on.

The pollution as you say is bad. Especially when there is no rain. However the chicken factory pollution and treatment works sins. Get washed away with the floods.The river depends on these floods to stay in good health.
