As long as one colonist is awake, it will always get worse. A random nanite infection, raider from nowhere, a escalating pawn because you killed a chicken. Stuff like that are the reason you always enable autosafe.

If you ever play with the human hive mod there is no better it only gets worse. Best case you have to resort to eatting your guys to feed the queen. Or the queen dies before researching hive jelly producing creatures.

@@VenomSteak Try cleaning up after a late game raid and your colony that was in the hundreds are now about fifty strong, and about double that is wounded so it turns into who can be saved and who is worth saving.
