Denying bereavement leave is actually a violation of FMLA, which is labor law. OP needed to contact HR or another higher up needing FMLA time off rather than deal with this idiot manager who clearly does not know the laws. Also OP the doctors office prepares the documents for FMLA prognosis and diagnosis not you and it does not take too much time.

This boss sounds as the female 'manager' at Goodwill that was there from 2017 to 2018, she was black and really dislike white people, she and another team lead were jr high school bullies who both hadn't grown up since then. I ended up having a painfull gall blabber, I was in bad shape, and I had my surgey on a Wednessday,I work on Thursdays also. So after the surgey I was still drugged up from the meds and was resting at home, the 'manager' called my house to Order me to come to work, because she thought I was faking having gall blabber pain and surgey, why she believes that I will never understand, ahe also talk about herself as a third person, she had a narasstic personailty disorder. My mom took the call, and she( mom) got ticked off on my behave,for I had dealt with bullies at a jr high school before. My mom had to take the phone in another room, then call HQ to get the weeks off that I needed.

Later on: The boss tried looking for jobs elsewhere but his actions caught on and no one wants to hire him. His wife and kids left him and now he is living in a studio apartment dealing with a lot of debt. He got sued for different forms of harassment and embezzlement so he is suffering. He is getting yelled at everyday by his younger supervisor.

Afterward: One day while David was in his office, an announcement from the PA system told everyone in the building to either stay in their offices or to run to a saferoom, as the building was being attacked by a group of armed assailants. David hid under his desk, and after a while he began hearing terrified screaming and gunshots as a fully armed police squad entered the building and engaged the men. When the threat was neutralized, David was able to leave his office and, while being escorted to safety by officers, he saw that among the people being loaded onto ambulances was Harris. It was later found that that Harris, desperate for revenge against his former company, had bribed one of the students at the high school he was now working at to introduce him to a gang. He then promised the gang a huge amount of money if they helped him kill his former higher ups and David so that they could take the company for themselves. While most of his thugs were dead, Harris himself survived being shot, and he was sentenced to life in prison since he had proven himself far too dangerous to be set free.

No one has the right to demand u can’t take care of a love one that is dieing r tell u , that u can’t go to the funeral. That’s a heartless person. Don’t know if this is a true story but revenge was gotten because the boss was fired for his actions & he got caught by the head man of the company.

Oh hang the hell on here. You have working rules of Law that HE has to abide by, HE can't dictate anything more than he would supposedly be willing to do himself, which, is nothing from the sounds of it. I get what this story is telling, but at the same time, you are missing out on so many relevant things that apply to this, least of all the idiot boss being a complete ass and treating the staff like cattle. Threaten to sue his butt, that would calm him down somewhat.
