My mom used to play this for me all the time as I grew up. She passed away almost 5 years ago and every time I listen to this song, which is often, I can feel her with me. It’s something I cherish. The lyrics are so incredible. I’m so blessed that my mom and I had such a strong bond and this song was part of that. This song will always remind me that she’s still with me.

Janis, I was 17 when this song came out. I know the song is written from a girl's point of view. But this song resonates with the boys too. And I can also tell you, those popular kids who seemed to lead perfect lives at 17....they peaked in high school.

What a great performance of a timeless song! The guitar playing is great, as per usual, but the vocal is the real treat here: nuanced yet powerful, sly yet naive, jaded yet marveling. Nothing ostentatious or bombastic, just delivering the goods. Wow....

Janis, if I could just speak to you I’d want to tell you how much this song has meant to me all my life. I heard it at 8 years old after moving to a new school where all the pretty and popular girls convinced me I was ugly (but I was far from it, looking back) your song defined me. It gave me solace that I wasn’t alone. The words are so deep with such a long view of life from someone so young as you were when you wrote it. I find people like you (and myself) are old souls and/or we’ve seen the world from more than a quiet, perfect, protected space. A lot of my art comes from my pain. I felt the way you did in that song from 8 yrs old through 17 when I finally left the false world made of lies called school. It was only then that I started to really see myself. But I’m back to feeling ugly now. It never goes away. It’s a pain too deep to ever heal - not just the words, but the way they treat you. It still goes on today even though schools don’t want to admit it. As a woman we feel as valuable as we look because we live in a society that forces that mentality even if they outwardly play nice and pretend they don’t judge you. But Janis, the last thing I want to say is you ARE a beauty queen. You deserve to love and be loved. And I pray you’ve found much happiness in your life. Thank you for inspiring mine.

In beautiful voice with a beauty of a guitar! (What is that guitar? 3 cases!) AND, come to think of it, the lyrics take on a new meaning for the retrospect being long. She was so young when she wrote and performed that. Oh, there's footage on you tube of her performing it back then.

I can not remember in her Bio how she explained exactly how she came up with the lyrics of this song. I assume, she is a Mensa musically. I loved this song, her voice, the strings, not so much that I felt such at 17, well, I was always the last to be called from grade 1-12 on the "play ground", being 4'11" did not exactly make me a basketball player! And I was never the girlie girl full of anxiety with "choose me, choose me, somewhat manic, as if being chosen was so important. I simply did not care if I was chosen or not, I viewed it all, starting in second grade, that the frantic " choose me" was feeling desperate. Although in High School I did enjoy Archery, it wasn't a "team" requirement, Solo was wonderful, I was not subject to the desperate calls of "choose me, choose me".
