In about 1972 my dad got me a Topper Jr. 20 guage and he got a full size in same 20 guage. We had a very nice trap and would shoot for hours. We reloaded the shells, and had a one gallon milk carton full of just the primers we replaced. My jaw would be black and blue the next day, and teachers in school looked skeptical when I told them how I got that way. LOL I was about 10 years old. Now, I have passed them to a cousin who has a daughter who loves to shoot. There isn't a more reliable gun that I know of, and safe. You will enjoy yours for many years to come with basic maintenance.

Just shot my H&R single 20 this past weekend. I put a slug right where I wanted it at 60 yards . My gun has always been crazy accurate. Took my first buck with it and still carry it in the woods when I don’t want to carry something heavy. Again another great video on a working man’s gun 👍

I've got that same shotgun. I got mine as payment for helping a co-worker move. The guts came in a baggie because something had broken. I sent it to a smith to have it repaired and open the choke up to Modified. Mine had a slightly short buttstock (NOT a youth model), so I put a slip on Limbsaver on it and now it fits great (lengthened the LoP to a little over 15") and I can drop anything I shoot at (when I'm not shooting over the gun 🥵). I would have no qualms shooting 3" mags out of it. If your gun is slamming you in the shoulder, measure the LoP. It's supposed to be 14 1/4". I bet you're going to find its a little short.
@crankygunreviews
@crankygunreviews Жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s possible my LOP is short, but I was shooting some pretty hot rounds too- most were reloads, a few were hot buckshot and some slugs.

Single shot guns are cool to learn on, they make sure you take your time to aim and make your shot count. I don't have one that light but I have my grandfather's old single shot 12 gauge and his bolt action shotguns. You gun ejects those rounds pretty well
@crankygunreviews
@crankygunreviews Жыл бұрын
Single shots definitely teach technique, and make you slow down. The ejector on this guy shoots the shells close to 20 feet

I have the Topper model 58 in 12 ga. wood furniture of course and a nice soft recoil pad and soft slip on leather sling and yes a bright green front fiberoptic sight for my old eyes and I can shoot 7 other different calibers out of it as well with rifled gun adapters !!!

@@crankygunreviews I love this single shot shotgun for it's the one gun I can do everything with in terms of home defense or just plain ole survival if need be !!! Is it the best home defense gun certainly NO but it is the BEST all around do all kind of gun for sure !!! This gun was my very first gun of anykind for Christmas of 1978 at the age of 13 so yes my comment might be a little bias but sincerely my humble opinion and it's the last gun I'de ever get rid of as Mr. Heston once said From My Cold Dead Hands is the only way they take this gun from me !!! 2A STRONG for life !!!

👍 Good review. I have owned several H&R rifles and shotguns and never been disappointed, they are excellent firearms. I just purchased a Model 88 20gauge. I now live in South Texas, but grew up in Southeast Massachusetts. Too bad that Remington purchased H&R and then shut them down - shame on Remington!

@@crankygunreviews I left Massachusetts in 1970 to attend college and have not returned in the last 20 years after the passing of my mother. As I recall it was always a blue state, but Democrats were different back then. Swimming up stream my family was Republican, but Republicans were different back then. I do not pay much attention to politics these days as I am not sure who is responsible for current conditions, the politicians or the people who elect them. On a happier note I also own an H&R Model 999 in .22LR that I inherited from my father. Take care and have a good day.

You can get a Stevens 301 in .410, it’s a modern plastic stick version but basically the same gun, and under $200 as well. I have some videos on that gun too. I haven’t seen many H&R or vintage guns in .410, and they usually cost more than their 12 and 20 gauge counterparts
