Starting from the themes of Dougald’s new book, At Work in the Ruins, this will be a conversation about the power of the language of “hospicing”, the “death-phobia” at the heart of modernity and the way this blurs our ability to look soberly at endings, but also how we reimagine the sources of agency when it comes to assisting with the birth of the new, as yet unknown and possibly (but not necessarily) wiser. Not least, how do we get beyond the assumption that agency lies solely with humans (and the particular subset of humans assumed to live closest to the future)?
Stephen, Vanessa and Bayo are three of the thinkers whose work resonates through the pages of At Work in the Ruins, so this is a rare opportunity to bring them into a public conversation with its author at the Stoa.
