This is great news! The paddle games were the only part of the machine where I felt that it was too bad there's a paddle right there that can't be used, but now it can, and in a very simple, direct way. Really glad that My Arcade is working on adding features like this!

Haha! Was on the fence between the GSP and the 2600+ since I have so many physical carts from 40 years ago but it seems the GSP is the better choice, especially with the paddle control update. The easy expansion to include many additional games is the clincher.

I always find myself missing a good minute or four scanning the background for childhood memories. Having grown up in PA, then moving to Boulder, Athens (OH), and Austin, my own are somewhat sparse. That gray, educational robot with the license plate name (“XLR8,” or something, I forget) that, as I recall, played 8-track cassettes to quickly play its response, depending on your answers, by switching tracks, was so awesome. That’s how I remember it, anyway. I hope that was close, that I’m not too far gone, anyway... Meantime, I’m very surprised MyArcade is going to these lengths... Thanks so much for keeping on top of it, for us! I fully rearranged the four systems on my bedroom TV, to make room for the VCS and the Game Station Pro. Then, today I hear the new VCS system update _doesn’t fix the worst problem_ on the system (the Zip Code thing... ), which P’d me O, but the this news balanced that out pretty well. Thanks, again! Cheers! This weekend is looking good, again...

This thing just gets more and more appealing! I don’t really need to organise ROMs by anything more than platform, as I **mostly** stick to ROMs of games I own in one form or another (physical media, downloadable homebrews, collections for modern systems). Well for me, I finally got around to setting up my SD card for the GSP, and only after the 1.30 firmware update. I made subfolders by console (Atari 2600, NES, etc) and though I added a lot, I didn't go nuts... I added what I had memory/nostalgia for, not everything in site. I added an additional 584 games split between Atari 2600/5200/7800, NES, Genesis, SNES and Arcade games. I wasn't aware of the added paddle support, so I may have to change up my SD card again. It's mostly all been positive additions, though some frustration with the obvious (trying to play 6-button SNES games on a 3-button controller). I recognize this is all "added bonus" so I can't complain too much, but if they could just add customizable controller and/or 6-button controller support, My Arcade will save my marriage! (My significant other wants to play SNES Donkey Kong Country, I promised her I'd download it for her, which I did, only to realize the controller fiasco!). Help me My Arcade! You're my only hope!
@gotroot801
@gotroot801 Жыл бұрын
First, Jon, thanks for the update. My paddle games have never played better outside genuine hardware! Second, a thought: the "Atari 2600 Paddle" folder allows for paddle games to use save states. I wonder if there's a similar set of folder names that would allow the same thing for other ROM files loaded off the SD card. I tried playing Chuck Norris Superkicks and had no way of saving state on my GSP, but if the paddle games allow it there there almost certainly has to be a way to get it to work for other folders.
@GenXGrownUp
@GenXGrownUp Жыл бұрын
You're quite welcome, and I feel the same way about the paddle performance. 😀 I thought similarly about "special power" folder names, but couldn't find any magic combination. As a console, the 2600 was the only one with a paddle controller (of the ones emulated here). And I can't actually think of an arcade game that used a paddle - they all seemed to have spinners, but not paddles. So even if we got the paddle to be reconized for arcade titles, having only about 330⁰ of rotation might make it not quite right anyhow.

hey man, just wondering if you know what the process is for adding homebrew games to the micro SD card? im not overly familiar with homebrews but id like to get into them more, and because i have an Atari GSP in addition to my original Atari 2600 VCS(i play both pretty equally because i purposely get games that, with a few exceptions, are not on the GSP. that way i dont just end up playing games that i have the physical cartridge for on the GSP because naturally the video quality is much better on there, but of course games like asteroids, yars revenge, and missile command for the 2600 are must have cartridges for any collector. but what ive started doing in addition to watching reviews/rankings/gameplay/etc on tons of games so that when i go to the store i know what is worth getting with the budget i have set at that time- but i also started adding some games that im thinking about getting or maybe remember seeing at the store to my micro SD card to test play them so that i know whether or bot ill like them. i have a specific "test" folder where these games go, and if i like it enough to get the cartridge, i might leave it there but i typically delete the ROM when i get the cartridge. on the other hand, if i dont like it enough to go and buy a physical copy, then ill move it out with the rest if the games(i dont have enough games on my micro SD card to rly need subfolders at this point). but heres the point of all this and the question that i have: how would i go about adding a homebrew game properly? would it be any different than adding normal ROM files and what would the file type be? i was thinking about making my own homebrews at some point too, if the game isnt technically made for a particular atari system, but simply follows the relative limitations of what was possible in games back then, what would be the process of adding a game like that?
@GenXGrownUp
@GenXGrownUp 2 күн бұрын
Adding a homebrew is just the same. Match the file extension to the console type for any other GSP addition (i.e. .a26 for 2600) and start the game normally.

Another great video, thanks! Question -- is it just as easy as creating a folder that says "Atari 2600 Paddle" (and then adding the ROMs) to enable the paddle support? Atari 8-bit computer would be a great next addition the GSP could include in the next firmware update, maybe Colecovision?

Pretty much nailed why I got my GSP actually, when it first came to my attention first thing I saw was the 200-ish games on it.. first thought was huh neat, but I already got all these other mini consoles do I *really* need to slap another ontop - then the selling point became visible, a SD slot, now THAT got my attention lol. The possibilities for what came next had me sold. The only issue per-se I'm having now is trying to get Mega/Sega CDs to work, there's only a couple of titles I wish to put on there but I think I have to hunt down iso's in a specific form and not spread across multiple files as I have them now, but I have pre-empted a 32x folder in advance for possible future firmware updates. I'm on board with a button-mapping option too, aswell as save state support for titles on the SD. Though I'd take it a step further and enable the use of more controllers, would love to use this usb Sega Saturn controller I got very simple thing.

I think the addition of folder support is very important and the feature I may find most useful. I've not yet reorganised my games on the console, but should I do so, I will put everything into folders. I'm very disappointed that the Y button is still hard mapped to the in game menu function, that's a serious oversight. I can understand why many third party controllers are not supported, but I'm still upset that my Logitech F710 controller doesn't work with the console. In terms of future features, I'd like to see a search function for the built in games, there are so many games on the console, and to be able to search for a game you want would be very good. I also want to see improved GBA emulation. I find that GBA emulation becomes very sluggish when playing 3D games like DOOM and DOOM 2. Also, do you know that if you have both controllers connected and turned on, you can't change the colour of the second controller? So, if you change the colour of one controller's lights, it'll change the colour of the lights on the console and the controller you're using, but not the second controller. Why? I suspect it's because of how the controller sends change light commands to the console. I also want to see improved support for alternative 3rd party controllers. I think I've told you this, but My Arcade told me to use the included joystick with the console, suggesting I shouldn't use third party controllers. But how can we play additional games on the console when many of the platforms it supports have more controller inputs than the factory supplied joysticks provide? Also, does the console work with standard XBOX controllers? I don't own an XBOX and I suspect the Elite controllers may cost more than the regular ones, so if I should choose to buy an XBOX controller for my unit, I'd rather buy the cheaper regular controller.

Here's something that might help for using an xbox controller for SNES games; when I hit Y and B at the same time, it registers just the SNES's A button. This means (for example) I can switch from Donkey to Diddy Kong without the annoying menu pop-up.

All your videos explaining the new and now upgraded GSP are excellent. Your enthusiasm is fun to watch. The firmware updates are good to improve this product. Also, do you think the GSP will ever be able to apply specific game cheats that are implemented with all versions of Retroarch?

Thanks for watching and for your kind words. And you're likely right about the comparison of the GSP and other options. I'm so glad I watched this video. I was extremely disappointed to discover that, when using the micro SD card, Kaboom defaulted to the joystick rather than the little paddle knob. I just added the new "Atari 2600 Paddle" folder and moved it to that folder, and now it works with the paddle! Even better, the paddle sensitivity is adjustable, just like with the built in games. Thank you!!! It's nice to see a company listen to their consumers and update/fix things, and surprisingly quickly! I wish Atari would do the same with the 2600+ regarding the paddles. They're better than they were before the firmware update, but they're still not smooth like on the original system. The same with AtGames and their paddle games with the Flashback 50th and 12.

Really! I still think the update on the FB 12 paddles play better..you just have to move further left and right than you should. On the gamestaion you don't have to move as much but feel more jerky..even wired..I can get better scores on kaboom and circus atrai with the flash back for sure!

@@frankonofrietti440 The firmware update with the FB12 definitely improved paddle play, but I still find it a little jittery. Not so much that it interferes with playing the games, but just with the way it looks as it moves across the screen. The same with my 2600+... improved, but still not perfect. Unfortunately, I hadn't saved any of the cartridges from the 2600 I had as a kid, so the only ones I had are those that came with the 2600+ and the paddle pack I got for it. However, after playing it on my FB12, I did end up buying one used cartridge from eBay... Kaboom. I got a new label for it too. I didn't have it as a kid, nor had ever even heard of it until watching one of Jon's KZbin videos, but man, that game is so much fun! With having it on the FB12 I didn't need it, and it doesn't play any better on the 2600+, but there's just something about having the cartridge... nostalgia, I guess. I find it fun on all three systems. Did you find the paddles that came with your FB12 a bit stiff? Mine sure were. They've gotten looser with use, and hopefully they'll continue to loosen up and get closer to the ones I got for my 2600+, which feel identical to the original 2600 paddles.
@PitfallHarry72
@PitfallHarry72 10 ай бұрын
@@frankonofrietti440 Oh, paddle games definitely play better on the FB12 after updating the firmware from stock, but there's still room for improvement. Obviously there's no way to eliminate the minimal lag with emulation, which actually isn't very bad at all, but I do wish it was as smooth as it was on the original system. It's acceptable though, and smoother than it was with the original firmware. I too find Kaboom better on the FB12 than the GSP. And it's slightly better on my 2600+, though the difference between it and the FB12 isn't really all that much. I had a Flashback 2 that I bought shortly after it debuted, and I would have loved to have modded it to take cartridges, as that would have been just like the original, though with better resolution. Unfortunately, after nearly 20 years the wires inside became somewhat brittle, and while taking it apart late last month to check the board revision, one of the wires broke at a solder point. That could be fixed, but through a series of unfortunate events involving my cat, the main system board was cracked, and that can't be. So much for that idea. 😭

It's just the extension that needs to be changed - no wizardry required. You can do them manually or use a tool like Advanced Renamer to do a bunch of files in a batch renaming.

Not sure where you're getting that more complex path, but in the root of the SD card should be a folder called "Games" and in that folder should be the subfolder called, "Atari 2600 Paddle".

Yes, it belongs in the "artwork" folder which is a sibling to the "samples" folder. Note that it's not a magic bullet and not every vertical game has a pre-made bundle of artwork included. Sorry to bug, honest I'm an experienced MAME user, I just cant figure this out! Are you putting the bezels in an artwork folder with the matching naming convention (IE DKONG) for your bezel to work? And on the external SD card? Or are you adding the artwork to the zip file of the DKONG mame file (keeping everything in a single file)? So sorry, if I could get some clarity on how you installed bezels so your aspect ratio crops within the bezel and shows the bezel on the gamestation pro.
