I wonder why Atari was so obsessed with the number pad...
@raminudl

Because back in the days of ye olde 2600, its main competitors the ColecoVision and IntelliVision both had them. So I guess Atari was just like "We'll show them!!!"

lol...IKR?! 1993 & they still couldn't let it go.....If they were still around in the console world today, they'd have some wireless touchscreen number pad controller or some shit =P

Despite the fact that the 2600 was much more successful than the ColecoVision and Intellivision? Boy, that definitely shows how much Atari had spiraled downward :P

Matticus Barticus the number pad is a good think when it comes to fps games. Like pc it easy to switch to a specific weapon quickly instead of cycling through all your weapons.

@Metal_Horror_Gamer: And the graphic panels you got with each game were a great little touch. You just bought Alien Vs Predator (possibly the scariest FPS game available in those times) now you got a customised joypad to go WITH the game.

I recently found a stash of all my old ps1 games at my parent's house, all cd's stacked up without cases. Guess what? none of them work, which sucks, because there are some awesome games I found. My genesis games, however? Play like new, even though they around 5-10 years older. I miss cartridges.

I think it's easy for people who did not play this system in the 90s to trash it. The first time I played Iron Soldier and saw the helicopters fly toward me.... I was amazed. Now, looking at this video you might think, "the graphics are simple", but my previous systems had been the Genesis and the SNES. The helicopters on Iron Soldier seemed to move so fluidly.

and to think I almost didn't check out your channel just because I thought your name was incredibly stupid. you don't resemble jesus (at least not the common depiction seen in paintings or on crucifixes) and aside from the shirts you wear and the the barely existent music, I just don't get it. Anyway...I'm so glad I gave you a chance. I LOVE every episode you've made. Your a knowledgeable, pleasant, all around likeable guy. You don't try too hard to be funny but when you do you usually nail it. Your guest stars are always well versed in the subject matter and not just an excuse to have another KZbin "celebrity" just for the to show of who you know. You're all around my favorite game reviewer/history buff. Its your down to earth well balanced style to your site. The whole metal jesus thing is not played up or gimmicky. I dunno, I'm just glad I subscribed instead of judging the game by the box art alone. So keep up the great work and don't let the internet game go to your head like oh...I don't know...pewdie pie or that Nostalgia critic jack ass. Metal Jesus, you certainly do rock

I never had the chance to play the Atari Jaguar. Looking at the control, it seems to be easy to mock it for its size. But then I remember that Xbox 360, Xbox One and PS4 has keyboard accessories to attach them into their gamepads, so it's not so odd to have extra buttons _if_ you can use them in the game.

Believe it or not when I decided to get stuck into Cybermorph I did enjoy it. I think if they added a 2D background it wouldv'e been a little less baron. Cybermorph was originally designed for a 32bit system called panther but when the Jag started coming together quicker the dropped it and threw Cybermorph on the Jag. Battlemorph looks a lot more like the early 3d games from the 32bit days. Skyhammer, Iron soldier2 and Fight for Life, Battlemorph etc show it's 3D capabillities in a better light.

If you were an Amiga user back in the day, you'd be familiar with Zool and Canon Fodder. I was surprised to see more than a few Amiga ports. A lot of the games "feel" like Amiga games. Which is great if you're an Amiga fan, but maybe not so much if you are trying to sell a 64-bit system..

metaljesus, i do enjoy most of your vids and i really like watching the hidden gems vids, they give me ideas of some retro games to buy. but when ever i see a console or game review i know before clicking on the play button you will concentrate mostly on the positive notes of what you are reviewing than the negative ones. and for me its frustrating and on the verge of being biased; and it seems you do it just for the sake of making you feel better about owning either a shitty game or console. the jag had some good games yes, but only a handful. most of the games had terrible graphics and horrible game play, not to mention the cd was extremely buggy and mostly did not work at all. now in this vid you did actually point out some of the worst things about the jaguar but even when you do mention the negatives you say it in a way that makes it seem not that bad which i believe is misleading. you probably wont even read this comment but if you do i hope you acknowledge and realize that you focus more on the positive than the negatives, even if the negatives outweigh the positives you still make it seem like "its not that bad". thats all i gotta say, thanks for the vids you upload and keep them coming....

The 3D graphics might have been crappy and choppy, but the thing came out in 1993. Keep in mind that predates even the Sega 32x by a year. The 3d graphics, while they don't hold up today, were damn impressive when the thing came out. Attempts at 3D games on the Genesis and SNES were crappier and choppier.
@aboriginalmang
@aboriginalmang 9 жыл бұрын
+drop bass not bombs But jag had better framerate. If you wanted to play a good 3D game back then you'd have to buy a PC rather than console though. Except for N64, 90's consoles were absolute crap for 3D games. They used the fastest method of generating 3D graphics called Affine texture mapping instead of Correct texture mapping that most games on N64 used. Affine mapping causes 3D textures to be jaggy and all over the place, like what you see when you play old PS1 games. Compare PS1 Medal of Honor to Perfect Dark, you'll see the difference between correct and affine texture mapping.

I love my Jaguar, at 32 I can remember launch day queuing and parting with my hard errand pounds, Alien Vs Predator and Tempest 2K were fantastic games, the sound track to Tempest is brilliant Jeff Minter Is a true legend and the atmosphere on AvP - Rebellion hit the nail on the head Its so so scary even today It still has you checking over your shoulders. BattleSphere for the Jag was mind blowing truly a stand out game people who say the Jag wasn't powerful enough obviously haven't played this, the Jaguar lives on and BattleSphere shows what it really can do. There Is a lot of stinkers on It and parting with your £50 In the 90s broke your heart but when you did get a gem like AvP It made It all worth It and as I said the Jaguar like my beloved NEO AES and CD still lives on to this day. Oh and as for the controller Its like Marmite you either love It or hate It and me I love it, strange as Im a MASSIVE 2D fighter fan the Japanese Saturn pad Is the best controller ever made and the Saturn's analogue disc pad Is another Marmite controller which Is joint top In my eye's!!

The problem with this system was that Atari launched a system that was too far ahead of its time. And the reality was that most people weren't ready to program games for a memory of this magnitude. To be sure, the Jaguar had a handful of really successful games like "Alien Versus Predator" and "Tempest 2000." But unfortunately, these few smash hits were not enough to take back the game market from Nintendo.

I loved my Jaguar. The Controller I think to this day was the best console controller ever made. what was weird is the one they gave you with the system was awesome but if you bought a aftermarket one the buttons where crazy hard to press. I took back 3 of them thinking it was just a manufacture problem but same thing with all of them. I had alien vs predator, bubsby, wolfenstein 3d, and kasumi ninja. I remember I really wanted doom on the jag but never got it. I heard it was really hard for devs to make games on it especially since they had some sort of different processors or something to get 64-bit so manufactures couldn't make 64-bit games because of the way atari set it up so thats why most games on it look like garbage to what its really capable of.

Raiden is pronounced "Rye Den." I think it's a stretch to call the Jaguar controllers "joysticks" when they don't have a stick. Checkered Flag and other games that appear to suffer from a low frame rate came out that way due to Atari Corp's management telling the developers to do it that way for fear the games would cause seizures. Check out Super Burnout in comparison.

AngryApeTV 32X version is still better. Problem with 3DO, it was a port from jaguar, and the saturn a port from PSX. Both ports are horrible and didn't use properly the hardware. For example you can see the quake version of SS and is awesome, or the 3DO wolfestein version is by far the best in any home console system. Jaguar was just a piece of garbage, and the only playable games are conversions from 16 bits systems. The control pad is horrible, everything. 3DO had much more potential, but it failed in the price and game cataloge.

I just bought a Jaguar. Sadly, it was flawed by having like APP games. Honestly it was a great gaming system. Some of the more mainstream games where of course just SNES/GENS releases, but the exclusives, with exception to Alien VS Predator, their games were still app like; play once and play again and the challenge just gets more difficult from time or more enemies. I also think Atari nailed the aesthetics, but they were still in the 80's with 1st party exclusives.

I loved the Jag back in the day, IDGAF what todays edgy cringe-master teens want to say with their throwaway lines like "worst console ever" and they say that without ever having even SEEN a Jag in the flesh let alone played on one. Alien Vs Predator on the Jag was EASILY one of, if not THE most frightening FPS games available in those days. Ultra Vortek was a great little fighter with dark themes and evil as fuck sounding music. I still remember the name of one track "Thy name is evil" lol. Tempest 2000 was a brilliant & trippy arcade shooter classic with a facelift. Trevor McFur was a great fun little shootemup. The console might not have lived a succsesful life but as its name suggests, it WAS a beast, in its own right, and powerful for its time, I mean, it beat Nintendo to the 64bit punch by what, 5 years?

No costs involved, no deadline, no publisher breathing down their neck demanding changes. That and he's going for a 1:1 of the DOS game. I've ate, slept and breathed the DOS game. The Jag port was something different. I'm sure if someone wanted to, they could easily make a 1:1 of the original game on one of these other consoles, if had they a devkit and all the time in the world.

Jaguar was far more powerful than the SNES, thats why IMO it had an edge over Nintendo, despite commercially being a flop. The console had some great games IMO. Alien Vs Predator, Tempest 2000 and Ultra Vortek were firm favourites I still remember. There was another game too, some 2D sidescrolling RPG kind of game. All I can remember is you played as some kind of futuristic soldier accompanied by a lizard looking alien and I remember he always used to say "who are you talking to warrior?" if you pressed "talk" when there was nobody there. No idea what that was called though.

The biggest problem with the Jaguar was that it wasn't really a 64-bit console. It was a combination of a bunch of components that added up to 64-bit. This made it very difficult and time consuming for developers to make games for the system.
@Animated__Freak
@Animated__Freak 8 жыл бұрын
+Pow3rh0use Well the added up to 64-bit is a myth that stared with the CEO of 3DO saying it was just two 32-bit processors adding up to 64, that is not true. The Jaguar has 64-bit processors such as a Blitter and a Object processor, it can process 64-bit of data because all processors runs on a 64-bit bus and the blitter allows it to move 64-bit of data really fast. So the system can do 64-bit when ever it is needed and ignore it when it is not needed. However the problem is that what the amount of bits a system has, is usually determent by the CPU, however Atari determent it by the amount of bit-data that could be processed. So it depends upon peoples definition. One thing that can be agreed on is that the system is complicated as hell and the power of the system was probably never fully seen.
@TheAgradeneu

The problem of the console was NOT the marketing number thing. The biggest enemy of the Jag was Atari's lousy (read: piss poor) software support, low budgets and lack of focus on the systems strenghts (which was not 3D). In fact the system has a 64 bit processor and a 64 bit bus. The two riscs are 32 bit. The CPU is 16 bit. This adds up to 144 bit bTW ;-)

The Jag was way ahead of the rest but personally there is a few reasons it failed. The design i never liked, thought it was an ugly system compared to the rest, mind you im from Australia so we had the good looking SNES at the time. Another issue was the price due to the superior hardware and well back in the 90's no one was whiling to pay that amount. Lastly the complex architecture of the hardware made it really difficult to program, im from the Atari Age community and know for a fact it still is very hard to develop software for. However having listed all it's flaws the system is amazing none the less. When a programmer has a full understanding of the hardware the games produced run and look brilliant. The system was definitely powerful and even more powerful then the later Saturn, 3DO or anything alike at the time. Some would even say more powerful then the N64 and Playstation despite being older hardware by a few years. You need to remember because of the poor understanding of the hardware, developers hardly ever pushed the system past 50% of it's potential. IMO Atari should have held off for a good 6 months and designed the hardware a little more user friendly and in conjunction the wait would have knocked down the price tag. Atari's biggest issue in the late 80's and 90's was their company management that kept shoveling 90% complete systems. The 7800 had potential also but leaving an ancient sound chip in the system compared to the superior Sony chip Nintendo used was a big mistake. I understand it was for backwards compatibility with 2600 games however a completely redesigned chip was needed. Many big mistakes Atari made on their own accord led them to an early grave, poor management and QA

When I first read about this thing back in 1992, I lusted after it. I scanned the pages of EGM every month for any piece of news about it. The tech specs seemed incredible for the price. It was even claimed that the Jaguar was better than the 3DO, the super-hot, expensive new system at the time. On paper, it sounded like the console I'd always wanted. Then in 1994, I saw the first screenshots and 100% of my enthusiasm died immediately. Coupled with the fact that Atari seemed to be screwing up at every step, it was clear it wasn't going to succeed. Hopefully, the new improved Atari can do better with this upcoming Atari Box.

@@Spegrogy It had two 32 bit processors (Sound and graphics) and one 16 bit, which essentially was there to tell the other chips what to do. Game machines have always been rated by their fastest components, otherwise everything would still be 2 bit, so the maths went 2 X 32 bit chips working in conjunction with each other = 64 bits. Why they didn't incorporate the two chips into one I don't know, but I would imagine cost came into the equation somewhere.

Think a lot of the problems with the Jaguar stemmed from the way it was built. It has 5 CPU's, one of them being a Motorola 68000. A lot of the developers making games for this couldn't be bothered working properly with the other CPUs and concentrated on the 68000 chip instead as it was used on the C64, Amiga etc.
@blppt

Wasnt really their fault---from what I've read, the tools for programming the RISCs didnt exist or were very poor, so unless you were willing to experiment, most devs that were even interested in programming the Jag saw that familiar 68K and used it. Also, FWIR, the RISCs were theoretically very powerful, but shipped with some crippling bugs, like an apparent inability to execute code out of main ram, which was only worked around years after the console's demise, by the homebrew community.

I am glad I stayed away from it when it came out, the Jaguar had a bad vibe from the beginning. The point for me is this, with the arrival of the Playstation it signal the beginning of a new era were gaming was the stuff of rich corporations like Sony and little Atari just could not compete. Then Microsoft arrived, Sega vanished. Only one company was able to survive the big rich companies, Nintendo. And they are still here.
