I just read chapter 27 of the manga and Ataru almost died from electrocution. Funny thing is Lum thought she actually killed Ataru when he actually fainted. It was a crazy chapter that never got adapted into anime and probably never will be fully adapted for its contents.

There's a certain seamlessness to the old version of urusei yatsura. It's like the whole staff are having fun while trying to create a fun show and somehow it feels real? I don't know how to describe it but a lot of gags and funny moments in modern anime shows feel "forced". And it's not that I'm having some sort of nostalgia for this show because I watched it last year. I guess It comes down to subtle comedic elements. instead of focusing on bombastic moments of laughter and just building up to that point, the older urusei yatsura used subtle comedic moments while having some huge funny sequences.

I kinda understand what you're saying, you can tell 2023 UY looks "infantilized" in some way. Violence/comedy doesn't feel the same when you fill it with bright colors and cheesy onomatopoeias every time there's a punch or a joke on screen 😭😭

Its the pacing I think that is throwing you under. For better or for worse the new version is much more accurate to the manga, however the manga itself only had chapters that were 16 pages long and it, itself has break neck pacing. For a majority of the manga, there is only two pages of set up for what will be the gimmick for the rest of the chapter. That isn't translated to alot of time in a moving picture unless you extended it out like the did in 2022 with the Lipstick opening. However, I will say that the only reason why the older version can have very subtle (if you call sticking your tongue out and openly mocking someone subtle, I would say tongue and cheek is more accurate) comedy is because of its larger run time given to each episode. For me I found the pacing sometimes needlessly slow, for every good joke, there is a ton of scenes and- sometimes episodes where I wish they would get to the point already. That doesn't stop me from liking either more than the other. I do think reading the Manga has helped me appreciate both in their own way.
