TUI Airways flight 630 heavy, Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner service from Birmingham Int'l Airport (EGBB) to Melbourne Orlando Int'l (KMLB). Recorded in Microsoft Flight Simulator on the VATSIM network, ATC included. A regular weekday sees a huge influx of pilots checking in on an understaffed frequency. The controllers do their best to coordinate traffic but the radio congestion creates an airspace nightmare.

A little of the Yes and the No for this. I can imagine it, in the same way that some people who actually have aviation licenses and/or jobs still use flight sims. Now, granted, if I were an Air Traffic Controller IRL I don't think it would be my idea of relaxation to get home from work, and then start role playing as a person with the same job. But if I were planning to begin a career in it, or if I wanted to practice the routine parts of radio communications with all the associated linguistic expectations that come along with it, then maybe it does make sense to role play as the ATC.

I can't speak for other controllers, but as a new controller with an S1, working on my S2, its not to different from the reasons non-pilots fly study-level airliners. Its a fun challenge, you can find a great community of like-minded people in your ARTCC, and its very rewarding to build knowledge and skill at it.

To be fair, if you enter airspace and get told to contact the Boston centre freq you automatically call in. You wouldn't hear the "don't call" callout from controller since you changed freq after the request.

Usually in the real world there will be more ATC active, and Centers will work to distribute planes across each others frequencies. It sounds like these controllers were actually doing that too, but it’s VATSIM so sometimes ATC has to go be real humans and AFP showed up right when New York Center had just dropped.
