I know the biology teacher is supposed to be some kind of strawman that is meant to symbolize the cold and heartless scientific nature of the secular world and all, but he really does seem like a reasonable pretty nice and patient guy in this. Which explains a lot of our current reality, I guess.

Evan is a fucking monster. He goes through this entire movie manipulating the other cast members and stirring the shit pot, all so that he can get some godly marital sex. This isn't a Christian movie, it is a suspense thriller about a scheming sociopath slowly reconstructing a girls life to revolve around him. I'm assuming that the next logical progression for the story of their relationship is him hacking her up in a basement so he can use her hair to sustain his chin strap beard.
@thor300138 жыл бұрын
+TehSugan I wouldn't go that far, but he is basically a Christian version of the guy Rachel was dating - they're both only interested in her because they want to have sex with her. Or do the film makers really expect me to believe that Evan would be even vaguely interested in "helping" her otherwise? What, does him being a Good Christian (TM) somehow make him immune to hormones? At least the other guy is being relatively honest about it, creepy as he may be. And he's willing to accept Rachel as she is, rather than trying to mold her into his ideal partner or whatever.
@TehSugan8 жыл бұрын
thor30013 Oh I agree. I was mostly joking. You gotta admit though, those dead eyes and that rehearsed, patronizing way of speaking to everyone doesn't do much to help the case against him being a sociopath. Though I guess we can't cite bad acting as a character trait.

Oh and we had plants a day before the sun to drive their photosynthesis. What do you mean there are stars over 6000 lightyears away that we shouldn't be able to see them if this were the case? Well then the speed of light must've been higher or something. _We just make this stuff up as we go._ Old Earth Creationist: No, that's silly! Clearly these things took millions upon millions of years, _but happened in the exact same order_, so the earth was formed before the sun, and plants existed *for millions of years* on it without being able to utilize photosynthesis, not a mere day! That's more reasonable, right? And in the end they unite over their shared agreement that at least they're better than those _stupid people_ who demand evidence _before_ drawing conclusions.

Marilyn Newman I agree, if you actually don't make the kid learn the religious culture when he's young, when he'll be 14 and in age to think by himself, he'll read the Bible or any other religious book, and believe it's not true. That's why learning kids religion when they're super young is indoctrination. If you let them live how they want without forcing them to learn and embrace it, they'll most likely be atheist. Religion takes it's power from the lack of knowledge and rational thinking, that's what history shown us with the Inquisition and crusades, things many Christians forget when they blame other religions of being ''evil''. Until someone proves me that we do not come from apes with VALID scientifically backed facts, I'll always be an agnostic atheist.

Besides, a lot of topics they address, such as Creationism, Chick tracts, and even misadventures in the Old Testament are not Catholic pillars.
@SonicGirl4Ever8 жыл бұрын
That's because there are a ton (and I mean a real cornucopia) of Christian denominations that all have varied central beliefs. For example, Catholicism the 'trunk' of Christianity where a lot of the original ideas came from, but over the years people have argued this way or that causing a bunch of different branches to form off of it (sometimes for good reason, like corruption in the medieval Church). Chances are if you're talking to a group of Christians of different denominations, it's only natural that you're going to get a bunch of different answers. It's not necessarily because they're wishy-washy, but because they actually do hold a bunch of different 'Jesus-sy' values. |'D

Catholicism has taught that evolution is real since 1950, the difference is that Catholics believe that God created the souls in human beings, while physically speaking humans came from great apes. These days it's almost always protestants (mostly evangelicals and pentecostals) who deny evolution, but there's also dissident Catholics who oppose Vatican reforms.

People who seriously think creationism needs to be taught equally to actual biology need to consider this scenario: You're sick and have to take antibiotics to stay alive. There are two doctors who got their degrees at the same school, but one took an actual biology class and the other spent months listening to "gawd diddit" over and over again. Who do you think is more qualified to give you medicine, a person who studied for YEARS to make sure they didn't accidentally kill someone through mis-prescription or a person who thinks snakes can talk?
@mastermarkus53078 жыл бұрын
I also consider this when people think that it should be taught as a "plausible alternative" to evolution: Does your church teach you that the Bible might not be true and that evolution is possible rather than the story of Genesis? It works both ways.

Apes,,,,,, along with many others in the animal kingdom, are "Sentient". Just saying
@stanjuan11788 жыл бұрын
Well, for the sake of general conversation, I rely on standard definitions. Such as this www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sentient and this www.dictionary.com/browse/sentient and this www.oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english/sentien . Sentience does not by standard definition indicate "Understanding of ones existence", nor does it specify "having Feelings, Emotions and holding Opinions". Possibly by some definition, these things may be a standard. Clearly by your definition, they are. It's impossible to know if various animals (which are are mostly incapable of communicating properly with us), have an understanding of their own existence. It is equally difficult to say with any certainty rather or not such animals hold what might be recognizable as an opinion. But on the topic of feelings and emotions, I defy you demonstrate to me that my dog and my cat for example, do not express both feelings and emotion. Many animals plainly demonstrate both of these traits. For example, some Parrots are captured in the wild expressly by playing upon their empathy for their fellow flock members. Poachers will often break the wing of a bird and toss it out on the ground to squawk in pain. When other flock members descend to the aid of the injured bird, (clearly showing the capacity for empathy), nets are cast over them in order to capture them. But if we consider such animals to somehow be of a lesser order than we "Humans", the lines become far more blurry when we are talking about our closest living cousins which share 98+% DNA with us. Chimps arguably can display what we might recognize as "Opinion". They certainly have Feelings and Emotions. There is no question whatsoever that they conform to the standard definition of Sentience. But then, pretty much the same can be said for any of the still living great apes, (whom happen to share less DNA in common Modern Man). All of this in light of the fact (of course), that Modern Man ourselves are one of the aforementioned still living great apes. It's not that modern man was birthed by a silver-back gorilla, or a chimpanzee or any other ape still living today for that matter. It's more that we are are STILL APES by definition today, in very much the same way all the species of Great Apes are Apes. Yet somehow, the question of Sentience becomes conflated with what it means intrinsically to be Modern Man. Why? Ask yourself why that should be. Why does modern man, being indeed a great ape ourselves, conflate sentience expressly with our own existence, while ignoring all the life that evolved before us? Why do we consider ourselves to be "Other" when we are so very clearly "Part Of". It's hard for me as a layman to know where to draw the line at sentience. I don't "Think" that a slug or worm for example are necessarily sentient, though I freely admit I have nothing but my own bias to guide me in that assumption. Are my chickens Sentient? Personally, I think they meet the standard definition for sentience. I firmly believe that my dog and cat are sentient. And higher life forms, (What ever the hell that means right?) such as the great apes are unquestionably sentient. There is a reason I take the time to type all this out. As I have aged and grown in wisdom, this question of what it means to be Sentient has become ever more important to me. In my teens, I had no problems hunting and fishing. Nor did I have a problem shooting a dog if it was running dear, or starlings just for being a "nuisance" bird. Don't get me wrong, i am not above shooting a rabbit or deer, starling or a dog even today under the right set of circumstances. But I am not the hunter that I used to be. I have a far more discriminating trigger finger in my middle age. And the thought of abusing animals that clearly in my mind are sentient by the standard definition invokes a wide array of terrible emotions within me, up to and including being moved to tears in particularly egregious cases. It is a never ending source of wonder and consternation when I hear of people treating LIFE on this planet with indifference and often with outright disdain. Consider for a moment the Tragedy that was the murder of the male silver-back in the zoo recently after a small child "Fell" (what a damn joke) into the exhibit. Did the ape choose to be held in captivity in the zoo? No. MAN made that decision. Did the ape design the enclosure? Nope, Man did that. And when inevitably, a MAN child fell into the exhibit, it was a MAN adult that destroyed that Silver-Back's life. And whats most disturbing to me is the nearly universal acceptance that the Silver-Back was little more than a dog in the grand scheme of things. An "Animal", an "Ape", not worthy of more respect and consideration. It was hardly anything at all to make the decision to shoot the ape. There was more consideration given to the financial aspects of the situation than to the fact that the "Apes" actual life was forfeit. It is a rather ugly and disgusting example of "MAN's" terrible arrogance towards and ignorance of, the true nature of life on this planet. And it saddens me greatly that it just does not even rate in peoples every day lives. What does it mean to be "Civilized", or "Accomplished", "Smart", or "Sentient" in some folks eyes? We ARE apes after all. The separation between "US" and "Them" is not so very much. Not nearly as much as "Man" likes to pretend. Man has the capacity to think in a way that even our closest Chimp cousins do not have. And for that, Man somehow believes that we have the right to treat all else with irreverence. Man IS NOT the Pinnacle of success in terms of "higher sentient lifeforms", nor are we the end all be all in the race for intelligence. Modern man will likely be little more than a footnote in history, a misstep (potentially) on the way to something far more "Sentient". On the whole. "Modern Man" displays ALL and more of the wild and cruel truth of our evolution. Some Men are "enlightened" without a doubt. But modern humans are by in large a cruel and destructive species of animal, possibly thee MOST cruel and destructive of any animal that has yet lived on this planet. And that is not something that a sentient being that considers themselves to be "Enlightened" should at all be proud of. As a "Human Being" myself, I for one am not altogether impressed with our notion of Superiority. For all of our remarkable accomplishments, Mankind still has vast opportunities for improvement.
@ZinTyPhoon8 жыл бұрын
Actually, most animals are sentient, but humans are sapient, which is why we are defined as homo sapiens scientifically. Sapience basically means we have the ability to think beyond just ourselves and our own existence, and there is even debate as to whether some other animals posses sapience as well, such as dolphins.

You know what, at least this movie made a BELIEVABLE evolution professor who isn't just "Evil Atheist Incarnate," lmao. Kevin Sorbo destroys ALL suspension of belief. This professor isn't close to being as awful of a strawman as Sorbo. Edit: Finished the review, he's kinda too ignorant to be believable after all.
@FreshMelonWater8 жыл бұрын
***** Sure, they made him way too stupid, but maybe that's just because the creators didn't understand a lick of evolution themselves, which is USUALLY the case with creationists. Whoever wrote Kevin Sorbo had NO excuse.
@FreshMelonWater8 жыл бұрын
+CriTheCricket There's a certain level of personal bias involved, too. Of course, if the creators WERE researching the topic objectively and thoroughly, they'd just conclude that creationism was wrong. There AREN'T any good arguments for why creationism is true OR why evolution is false, and that's just reality. And they can't make a movie about creationism with that. Kevin Sorbo was just worse than a totally incompetently-written character, he was the product of the downright malicious motivation "Let's make it seem like the people who disagree with us are the most hateful, nasty people ever who really just hate god instead of disbelieving in him for intellectual reasons."

That doesn't make his statement any less accurate, Slashback. The beliefs of Christianity are 100% at odds with our centuries of gnostic knowledge and scientific discovery. Religion puts you in a dark room and says there's a dragon in it. Science provides the torch that proves once and for all that there isn't one there. In a logic-oriented world, this would also be the END of religion's influence on mankind, but unfortunately there are tons and tons of stupid people who distrust FACTUAL DATA in this pathetic world.

Man, questions like the chicken-and-egg thing are so typical for something professors only ask in Christian movies. It assumes the audience has never heard of evolution before, the way they then explain it. Just like characters in Chick Tracts have never heard of Christianity. And it's basically asking: "What's true: creationism or evolution?" when in real life, the students would already have a basic understanding of evolution and just learn the details in class. And no one would bother mentioning creationism (at least not in Europe) cause there's no debate there at all.

+SuckyGamer Frankly, I never understood this. What kind of faith honestly allows for people to make these huge concessions that go against what the book actually says? When does it end? Will there be a point in time when Christians will teach about "how you can be a Christian and accept that Jesus never existed?" I'm not just shitposting, either. If anyone has input, I'd like to hear it.
@JordabHawkeye8 жыл бұрын
***** I never really said it was bad. It's certainly better than the alternative. But again; where does it end? Is Jesus just an allegory? Is God just a metaphor? Why is it so okay to define exactly what the Bible states as fact and what is just allegory depending on what you personally think?
@JordabHawkeye8 жыл бұрын
***** You say I'm using a fallacy, but you also imply that Genesis is the same as calling people literal reeds. That doesn't seem fair. How is Genesis so obviously supposed to be portrayed as a metaphor, especially since people have only been calling it a metaphor as of late to make room for evolution?
@brabbit3308 жыл бұрын
22:50 I find it hilarious that these Christian writers think the word "ape" is an insult. It's just a scientific categorical word that describes primates that don't have tails ( this includes gorillas, chimps, orangoutangs, bonobos and humans). Calling someone an ape as an insult makes about as much sense as calling someone a mammal as an insult. Literally no one has used the word ape as a derogatory word since the freakin 1800's.

People think the biggest appeal to religion is the afterli promises but it's not. Its the ego; every religion I have ever heard of ha a taught that the person is important and matters. Even religions with dick gods have such gods care very much about what the ants they crush do. You matter to Zeus cause if he isn't happy with you then he will make that clear. Not apathy but rather attention. So hardcore fanatics don't want to hear in anyway that they aren't special and one of a kind.

I'd like to imagine the fictional creationist dad debate Aron Ra. It would be hillarious. I agree with you guys, these movies don't even try to convince atheists/"evolutionists" about the "truth" of creationism anymore (if they ever did). Their only purpose is to make creationist Christians feel better, and discourage doubting creationists from seriously considering the alternative, and reaffirm them in their (misguided) faith.

Actually, I'd say that the chicken came first. First, let's say we can draw some line where some near-chicken gave birth to the first 'official' chicken. However, the egg is still a product of the mothers body. It is the egg of a non-chicken, that contains the first chicken. It will not be until that chicken mates that the first chicken egg will be produced. Now, I could be wrong on this, and the egg is formed by the child DNA, not by the mothers DNA / body. I couldn't find a quick and easy answer online. But I'm fairly confident that the egg (as we think of it in this circumstance, not in terms of an egg cell) is a parental construct. Of course, we could also say that the egg predated chickens by millenia, if we don't clarify that we're talking about "Chicken Eggs".
