Isn't it fascinating how small the world can feel sometimes? Just behind you 4:14 guys enjoying your meal, there's a school that holds a lot of memories for me from my childhood. It's amazing how our paths intersect without us even realizing it. Thanks for sharing this glimpse of a place that holds so much nostalgia for me!

Just a little clarification, moussaka is not topped with cheese it's topped with bechamel. And if you want to compare something greek to lasagna use pasticcio which is pasta and meat sauce topped woth bechamel.

Athens has a lot of bakeries and BYZANTION (pronounced Vizándion) is one worth visiting for its quality, artisanal products as you saw. The second bakery you visited is in fact a chain (Apollónion) and that sign with the words is not its name but the products it sells: Bread, Sweets, Croissant, Coffee.

The large sesame cookie called ladokouloura shown in the bakery which is very dry is delicious with coffee or any other drink. I actually purchased these cookies at a Greek cafe in Florida and eat them almost every morning with my coffee. These cookies are made with olive oil and my opinion the least fattening Greek Cookies.The ones I purchased were very small. I am also planning to make some without sesame seeds. My mother was Macedonian but lived in an area where the language was Greek. My mouth was watering when I saw you and your husband eating because I grew up with same type of food but better since the food was cooked fresh from my mother!

@PubliusCornelius-s5s
@PubliusCornelius-s5s 2 ай бұрын
So many Turks need to hear this: Nomenclature is not as important as it seems as first. There is actually quite a lot of evidence that yogurt and desserts not too dissimilar to baklava and loukoumades were eaten in Greece for millennia prior to the rise of Turkic states in the region, despite their names. 'Oxygala' is what the Greeks called yogurt before adopting the Turkish term for example. It is very possible that given the fact that Turkish (with Farsi/Persian) was the language of the Ottoman court, that the language occupied a position of prestige in the empire. Therefore, it could be that minorities within the empire either gave dishes that they invented Turkish names, or altered the names of pre-existing dishes to suit the linguistic environment. This would not be unprecedented. In Greek, the word for 'door' is 'porta'. The original Greek word for door was 'thyrras'. Porta is a Latin word and was adopted by the Greeks from the Romans. Did the Greeks not have doors before meeting the Romans? In Greek the word for 'house' is 'spiti'. The original Greek word for house was 'oikos'. Spiti derives from the Latin 'hospitium'. Did the Greeks not have houses before meeting the Romans? For contemporary examples, consider the coffees invented in Greece in the 20th century-- frappe and freddo espresso and freddo cappuccino. As stated, all three were invented by Greeks but given French and Italian names. This is likely due to the fact that in modern times Italy and France occupy positions of prestige within the hospitality/culinary/barista industry. In summation, just because some dishes have Turkish names (which are often derived from Persian and Arabic anyway) does not in any way mean that they have indisputably Turkish origins.

Greek salak : Greek Tzatziki : Turkish (Cacık : means ''mixed'' in English) - Greek word has no meaning Saganaki : Greek Dolmades : Turkish ( Dolma : means ''stuffed'' in English) Greek word has no meaning Yoghurt : even no argue it was brought from central asia. Thanks to Bulgar Turks (after a while they mixed with Slavs and consequently became a Slav state) it was recognized. Mousakka is arab origin food. Greeks were influenced during Ottoman period So Greek cuisine is mixed cuisine and most of food came from eastern civilizations. But they are famous with green olive,olive oil and sea creature dishes ( except fish). For example Kalamari is 100% Greek.

The "koulouri", is baked, dry circular bread with sesame. It is consumed with cheese/olives as a snack or accompanies coffee/tea instead of cookies. The one in the video is rubbish, not Greek, with a lot of calories. Greek yogurt MUST be made of sheep/goat milk (as feta cheese). When cooled, there is a skin formed on top. All other milks may produce yogurts but not GREEK YOGURT. In Greece one should ASK for original Greek yogurt else one eats a cow milk product.

A Californian foodie here: Authentic Greek food??? Dolma is not Greek. It comes from Turkish word dolmak, means to stuff. Tzatziki is from Turkish word Cacık (read jajik) which comes from old Persian ژاژ meaning herbs mixture. Ispanakopita or spinach pie, spinach is from Persian اسپناج, Briki or the coffee pot comes from Turkish word ibrik, from Arabic ابریق from Persian آبریز. Yogurt is a Turkish word from verb Yoğurmak meaning to ferment. Mousakka is from Ottoman from Arabic مسقعه meaning chilled. Eggplant in Greek is called Matizana which comes from Arabic بادنجان coming from Persian بادنجان.

What is the big deal about eating cow tongue? Do you think the chef gave you something no one wants to eat? It's a tender part, and you should appreciate the fact that the chef gave your the precious part. It's far better than humbergers and hotdogs whose meat come from what some think disgusting, and very few know how they are made. I don't know what made you think it may have "a strange flavor or texture." If you review food publicly, you should be ready to try everything without prejudice. By the way, for your information, Japanese pay premium for cow tongues.
