SPOILERS FOR NETFLIX'S AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER S1E1 "AANG"
Welcome to my reactions to the LIVE ACTION ATLA adaptation from Netflix! At the time of writing this I am about halfway through the series, and even though I may have minor critiques, it's very clear that they have brought us a new, fresh take while remaining as faithful as possible to the original! What additions they do make, I have been loving for the most part! This new perspective of the story feels incredibly visceral and raw, and in many ways the live-action medium definitely elevates and heightens some of the humorous or dark moments. I think this series has found a great balance while tapping into the core elements of the story we all love!

Personally... I thought this show was a 10 out of 10 in terms of sets, costumes, casting, music.. But I find the writing to be so bad... Like, so seriously BAD. This show has major Rings of Power/the Witcher vibes to me... Feels like very expensive fanfiction. I honestly didn´t feel much love for the original series in this product. It felt like they didn´t like the writing and choices of the original very much, and they actually thought they could do "better" at several points. And to me, it felt like school play dialogue most of the time (even tho the actors were good). I don´t understand why you wouldn´t use A SINGLE LINE OF DIALOGUE from the original... With shows like One Piece or the Last of Us, I honestly believe ATLA deserves way better than this. I hope this show gets renewed, for the people who seem to enjoy it... But personally, I can´t wait till we get that third live action adaptation, in a few years from now. Perhaps third time is the one 🥲🥲

I loved how we got to see things the animated series of Avatar the Last Airbender didn't show. plus the bending in this series was perfect and best of all the casting choice for the characters was awesome too.

It’s actually pretty good show, definitely nowhere near the original which isn’t supposed to be, but definitely miles better than the movie (that doesn’t exist). The thing is, this show is good enough when you separate it from the og, without comparing it and such, i give it 7,5/10.

I love how they kept true to the intro sequenece! The scenery, bending, all looks so good. It was brutal but I'm also glad they kept the realism to the damage fire would do and didn't shy away. And awesome that Sokka has kept the humour, unlike the film version I won't name. I'm only 2 eps in but great start to the series!

Hope so too as they can only get better from here. But people are literally so hellbent in comparing all of the cartoon to this first season of the live action. The cartoon's first book was also the weakest in the entire series

The earth bender chase at the start was a great introduction to bending and the stakes. Sozan was smart in leaking the plans but killing all the airbenders was stupid because the avatar would just reincarnate into a new generation not sure if that was a small oversight (granted Aang wasn't there but he didn't know that) The CGI is top shelf The actors definitely have nailed the mannerisms of the animated version but also made it there own too

@Catherine LaSalle I’ve seen the first 4 episodes so far and I have to say, I was right there with you, I was completely shocked “no pun intended” that they showed Fire Lord Sozin actually straight up fry that earth bender alive and I thought much like you said out loud in your reaction “wow, that didn’t happen on Nickelodeon” Which to be fair I didn’t watch the series for the first time as it aired on Nickelodeon I binged it on Netflix for the first time about 4 years ago during the pandemic era shutdown’s and honestly, team avatar got me through some pretty dark times, they were like my on screen friends when I couldn’t go out to see friends in real life, I hope that doesn’t sound too cheesy but, that’s legitimately how I felt when I felt sad and alone as I was watching that during the pandemic for the first time

one piece is an amazing story, but the anime had issues, mainly pacing. it’s why everyone is so very excited for the new wit remake and the netflix series. there are things that can be improved. on the other hand, avatar needed little to no changes. when you adapt one of the greatest shows of all time, you’ve gotta make it great, which they didn’t. they took a great show and made it alright. that shouldn’t be praised.

Wow, I haven’t binged all of the episodes yet but as a fairly new avatar fan, I have to say I don’t see what these “supposed” avatar fans are going on about how it sucks and isn’t as good as the original animated series. I watched the original animated show the first time about 4 years ago and honestly, all the major points so far in the first season are there so far, and honestly I had the fact that they showed the genocide of the southern air temple inhabitants spoiled but, I wasn’t expecting it to be so brutal. In fact, somehow in live action the violence particularly when it comes to the fire benders and the fact right at the beginning it shows Sozin frying an Earth Bender alive and it actually shows a few quick shots of him screaming as he’s being burned alive, my first thought was “damn, I remember them showing them burning people alive in the cartoon but, you didn’t see the body screaming in pain and agony as it’s being burned alive.” Honestly, from what I remember, I know they took stuff out and I get it, and hardcore avatar fans may hate me for saying this but, I think I might prefer the pacing of this adaptation so far, and some of the more vicious and brutal elements they brought to the live action show so far especially when it shows the pure viciousness of the fire benders. Also, is it just me or does Daniel Dae Kim have such perfect casting that he looks like Fire Lord Ozai taken straight from the animated series and thrown into live action, I don’t know why but all the characters seem that way, right down to the voice work sounding just like how the characters talked in the animated show. Also, Catherine if you didn’t know this already which you might have as a huge avatar fan but, we are actually getting a theatrically released sequel movie trilogy in the next couple years with the original team avatar showing what they are up to in their 20’s and 30’s after saving the world from Fire Lord Ozai.

Gran Gran is honestly my biggest disappointment, acting wise, which I'm blaming on directing. The actress has a 36 year career in some pretty good films, so I know she's better than her delivery here

i didn't really like seeing the genocide, nor aangs backstory. they basically told us everything about the kid BEFORE he even came out of the iceberg, which is just poor writing. the mystery behind aang is what really pulls you in to the original. i think it's a better adaptation than most, but it still isn't great, and when the original that you're adapting is one of the greatest shows of all time, that's a blunder. kinda understand why the creators left. the bending is fricking awesome though.

@@tovolume i honestly don’t get that argument. you have one of the greatest shows of all time as a reference. it’s praised so much for a reason. why would you ever want to change anything? why would you not follow it closely? netflix pushing away the og creators because they wanted to tell their own version of a story, that they had no part in creating, is where they went wrong. maybe if you haven’t watched the original it’d be better, but why would anyone ever choose to watch this version over the one that will remain timeless? it’s just lame.
